Avatar f tn I just checked out of the hospital yesterday, where I was admitted for pneumonia and a high WBC count. When I checked out, I was told my WBC is still too high, and that I'll need to get it checked soon. I'm becoming concerned because even though I left the hospital, I am still incredibly weak and don't have the energy to do anything or go anywhere. I will have to return to work on Monday, and at this point, I don't know if I will have the physical energy.

Avatar m tn Hi. Fever in patients with leukemia or other cancers may be due to one of two things. First, cancers usually overproduce a substance called tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a). This substance has various effects which help the cancer cells survive and proliferate. TNF-a also induces inflammatory reactions and fever. So the development of fever may mean elevated levels of TNF-a in the body. The second possible cause of fever in cancer patients is infection.
Avatar m tn Leukemia typically shows up in routine bloodwork--the complete blood count (CBC)--as an elevated white blood cell count or an extremely low white blood cell count. Sometimes, it also presents with a low red blood cell count. Your father's doctor may have mentioned that he exhibited signs of leukemia either because of the symptoms you mentioned your father having (fatigue, weakness, bone pain, etc.), or because your father had an elevated white blood cell count with a CBC the doctor had run.

Avatar n tn Is leukemia a possibility if I've been having chronic wrist pain since mid-January 2008. I went to the dr., he did an xray and said nothing appeared. I had a CBC w/differential done Dec 31 2007 and everything turned up normal. I know bone/joint pain is a symptom of leukemia, would this be more systematic or could it be a localized area? I also came down with a cold a few days ago, constant coughing, mucous but no fever, please any insights?
Avatar m tn Poor absorption as in irritable bowel syndromes and malabsorption syndromes too is possible. Malabsorption syndromes are seen in intestinal tuberculosis, HIV, tropical sprue, parasites in stool and Whipple’s Disease. Diabetes too can be the cause. Since gut cancers and leukemia, lymphoma are ruled out, your mother should consult her gynecologist and urologist to look into causes and cancers related to uterus, cervix, vagina, ovary, bladder etc.
Avatar n tn I heard recently on a tv show that there are blood tests that will confirm whether you are likely to get leukemia. Both my parents died of leukemia in 2009. My father had AML, my mother had CML. Can anyone give me some information I am seeking? I was asked to have a blood test taken in 2009, and my doctor then said there was something they would watch, but then she retired, and I have no idea what she was talking about. Any info would be a benefit! Thank you!

The experiment, in April, used a disabled form of the virus that causes AIDS to reprogram Emma’s immune system genetically to kill cancer cells. The treatment very nearly killed her. But she emerged from it cancer-free, and about seven months later is still in complete remission.

Avatar f tn Since the approval of imatinib, patients now have over 80-85% long-term survival. However, not all patients respond to or are able to tolerate imatinib. Fortunately, in the last several years, two other agents (these are referred to as second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors) – dasatinib (Sprycel®) and nilotinib (Tasigna©) have both been shown to be at least equally effective (and likely better) in treating CML.
Avatar f tn About three months ago I went to the doctor as I was extremely fatigued and thirsty. Around that time I had been feeling some discomfort in my chest/lung area and occasionally pain.
