Pneumonia in immunocompromised patients

Common Questions and Answers about Pneumonia in immunocompromised patients

pneumonia

Avatar n tn Patients with CML are immunocompromised and can easily acquire infections. Neutropenia also puts a patient in an immunocompromised state. For now, it is very important to prevent acquiring any infection. You should avoid crowded places and persons with ongoing infection. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Would carinii pneumonia present itself with just a minor cough and congestion and no fever, no rash or other symptoms. In other words is this type of pneumonia something that is more severe? I have not had an exposure to someone with HIV, but I have allowed myself to receive oral sex on occasion from guys that I did not know their HIV status.
Avatar n tn Since you are on this post, Klebsiella pneumonia can be normal bacteria in your intestines. It can also cause urinary tract infections, infections in wounds and sometimes pneumonia in immunocompromised people. So, the fact that you have a Klebsiella sp. in your urine isn't surprising if you have an infection there as it is a relatively common organism for a urinary tract infection. It is unlikely you would get pneumonia from it.
Avatar f tn In addition, hospital-related infections in patients not previously considered at risk (e.g., patients in an intensive care unit) have become a cause of major health concern. C. albicans is commensal and is among the gut flora, the many organisms that live in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Under normal circumstances, C. albicans lives in 80% of the human population with no harmful effects, although overgrowth results in candidiasis.
Avatar n tn a month later she was in the hospital with pneumonia, blood in urine, and overall weakness and confusion. On day 3 of hospital stay, the results came back from a sputum sample pin poinint MRSA. We were required to enter her room with gloves, mask, and gown on any visits. At times a dr would come in, listen to her lungs, without any of the precautions taken. If this is so infectious, then why do some have to "suit up" and other's don't.
Avatar m tn If you have a severe flare up and need Cipro and Flagyl, your WBC will usually change. Keep in mind that diverticulosis is not the same as inflammed diverticulitis. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Hi, How are you? Indeed, acinetobacter infections have been identified in hospitalized patients and health care related outbreaks especially in critically ill patients receiving invasive medical interventions such as central lines, arterial lines, and mechanical ventilation . And in recent years, like methyl resistant staph aureaus, this group of microorganism has been increasingly recognized as a significant healthcare-associated, opportunistic, multidrug-resistant pathogen.
Avatar m tn Hi. I do not typically get Flu shots, but decided that since flu like symptoms were a side effect of tx, I wanted the extra protection to know that I didn't really have the flu. Got the shot in August and started tx in September.
Avatar f tn I had chicken pox as an adult. Should I risk participating in a blind study for the shingles vaccine or go ahead and ask for the real vaccination (dead virus)?
418165 tn?1295753981 I noticed the other day her cough, (this is the only symptom shes had), had came back a little worse then it was before. So we go to the dr and have another x-ray and shows pneumonia in the same spot, same size and everything.
Avatar m tn Not sure if your dad served in the military but we were able to get some VA assistance to help cover some costs in the facility. It's called Aid and Attendance. Without the help we wouldn't be able to afford it. It's so tough financially, best of luck.
Avatar f tn The only population that would possibly be recommended to test to 6 months would be those who were severely immunocompromised, ie chemo patients, end stage terminal cancers patients, patients taking anti-rejection drugs post an organ transplant, etc. Even people in those populations almost always test + within the 3 month timeframe due to the improvements in test sensitivity. You don't have an HIV concern, as we've discussed before.
Avatar m tn Mortality from influenza is increased in patients with cirrhosis. Therefore, these patients should receive annual injections of influenza vaccine. During flu season cirrhotics are part of the high risk groups that are given priority for obtaining the vaccine. As far as other levels of liver disease or treatment, there is no standard recommending all of these vaccinations. Obviously they can't hurt. As you will never have to worry about becoming infected with these viruses. Cheers!
898849 tn?1241811271 I just heard about the recent death in Washington where the individual had a heart condition, pneumonia and swine flu. I was recently diagnosed with CHF in January, so all this is still very new to me.
Avatar n tn Could you please tell me in more detail why patients that use steroids are not able to take the influenza vaccine? thank you very much.
Avatar n tn 1) While it is true that certain immunosuppressive drugs, including methotrexate, in theory might result in increased frequency or severity of herpes recurrences, in fact this is uncommon. It depends in part on the dose of drug; with methotrexate, this probably occurs only with the very large doses used for chemotherapy for certain cancers. The doses for ongoing conditions like rheaumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, etc are not known to actually have these effects.
Avatar m tn 3 months post exposure test will give you a conclusive test result.
Avatar n tn Hello, From your symptoms it can be drug induced bullous eruptions( if you are taking chemotherapy), bullous fungal infections( common in immunocompromised patients like those on chemotherapy), photophyto eruptions or bullous staph infections. To confirm the diagnosis, please get an evaluation done from a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar m tn A false-negative HCV Ab result may also occur in immunocompromised individuals such as those infected with HIV, recipients of organ transplants, and patients receiving chronic hemodialysis. If the HCV Ab result is negative in immunocompromised patients, but there is strong suspicion of HCV infection, it would be appropriate to order the HCV RNA test.” So by testing sooner you would likely need to retest if the result on the hep c antibody test is negative.
