plavix

Avatar f tn Does anyone know what to take for an alternative to Aggrenox? I had a TIA almost 4 years ago and was put on Aggrenox, well, my husband will be losing his job in a week due to the economy which also means we will be losing our health insurance as well. I asked my doctor if he could take me off it and put me on something else and all he said was he would prefer I stayed on Aggrenox. I don't think we can afford it because it is $305 for a month supply!
1013028 tn?1250923267 Hi Linda, The lupus anticoagulants usually interfere with blood clotting and are also factors for thrombosis. Patients with a lupus anticoagulant are prone to excess bleeding, repeated miscarriages, thrombosis and strokes. Patients with a lupus anticoagulant that presents atleast twice and a history of thrombosis should be given indefinite treatment with anticoagulants. Thrombosis can be prevented with heparin administration and treated with heparin and warfarin.
Avatar f tn I don't know about "normal," but if the regimen of warfarin and Plavix is working for you, then great. Your goal is to find something that works. Have you been tested for clotting disorders? Your story makes me wonder about that, especially if the stroke happened to be due to a clot.
Avatar n tn I recently changed doctors and today the new doctor suggested I stop the warafin and start taking Plavix. I am 52 y/o female. No hyper-tension, no diabetese, no tia/stroke or any of the factors listed for taking warafin instead of aspirin. The doctor said I was a good candidate for aspirin to prevent clotting but I am allergic to aspirin. Has anyone heard of or personally changed from warafin to plavix? Thank you for any input you can provide.
Avatar f tn I am on Plavix but was off it for 2 weeks because of a needle biopsy of thyroid for nodules. My question is could going off Plavix possibly cause a TIA and how long does it take to get the level of Plavix back where it should be once you start taking it?
Avatar n tn Thank you for replying, I do have a neurologist, he has told me a few years ago that I had a TIA put me on plavix and aspirin, I went to him for l-sided pain, back, hip down the leg to foot, could barely walk on a daily basis, still having the same problems, after 2 years of cortisone shots, neurontin, lyricia, I stopped taking the plavix aspirin and everything else about 8 months ago, because nothing was working, I had enough.
Avatar n tn Due to brain damage from surgery I have temporal lob seizures I was put on gabapentin and depression occurred. I am looking for something that would control the seizures without depression. Help with any idea! Thanks Would Dilatin help with this type of seizure?
Avatar f tn About 1-1/2 months ago he started experiencing mild itching on his legs and has now become chronic all over his body. Most of his meds have rash and itching side effects. Aggrenox was just changed to Plavix, but the itching has not stopped. 325mg of aspirin is also a future consideration as a blood thinner. He was given Ativan 0.5mg two days ago to stop the itching. The first night he practically scratched two wholes in his paralyzed arm.
Avatar f tn We just want our dad to live and to have the best chance for successful surgery and not have a massive stroke waiting. He is now on Plavix, aspirin and a medication for cholesterol if that helps in the way of information. To any one who will answer, you have my deepest thanks.
Avatar f tn I am not sure if her physician would be agreeable to try a simple 81 mg baby aspirin with her. Plavix is another blood thinner that is prescribed also.
Avatar n tn my father just got through another stroke recently. he has been on Plavix for two years since the first one in 2008. my question is Plavix would reduce the risk of stroke but could not 100% prevent it, correct? I am not sure what is the cause yet this time. he is still in the process of going through all various types of tests and so far the doctor seems very comfortable with the results available; also he has totally recovered without any sign of stroke symptoms.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your feedback. To my first responder I had a clot with no bleed and to the second I'm on aggrenox twice a day. I've definitely become more aware of hydration and make a more consciouse effort to stay hydrated. I went to see my neurololgist and hemotologist this past Friday and they both are referring me to a Cardiologist. Trying to find out why to prevent another.
Avatar m tn This risk or any risk associated with plavix needs to be evaluated for excessive bleeding, etc. (for some individuals that is a serious consideration) vs. a risk for an MI. Apparently, OP experiences other problems believed to be associated with plavix and that should also be a consideration for him. I discontinued plavix after a year or so and my wallet is happy.
Avatar m tn I take 16 or 17 medications including the all inclusive plavix. a 3.25 aspiriin. AGGRENOX,Zocor, and a host of others.I watch my diet and exercise until it hurts to prove to my Dr. that I'm not just lying around. With your "scientific ' MINDS can you help?
Avatar n tn > Coumadin and Plavix are both anti-platelet agents as well as aspirin that might just be a typo, but I'll go ahead anyway and point out that Coumadin is not antiplatelet, it's an anticoagulant. It works as a vitamin K antagonist, and vit K is necessary for the synthesis of prothrombin and Factor VII.
Avatar n tn Aggrenox does have aspirin in it. It is recommended for strokes, as you already know. I'm not sure why the Dr has taken away the Aggrenox. Maybe he feels that taking aspirin is equivalent with less side effects? Aspirin does work well to help prevent stokes and heart attacks. So, there was no reason given for the change?
Avatar n tn Been on Plavix for 6 years for 5 DES stents. Very recent, I had an event monitor for 3 years of ongoing, sporadic irregular heart beats that causes 5-8 seconds of dizziness/lightheadedness. Finally caught it on the event Monitor. Doctor said monitor showed Atrial flutter in the upper chambers of heart. Told me to get off the Plavix and she would RX Pradexa which is like coumadin.(never been on coumadin or heparin) I am 74 years old and also take Nexium, Crestor, Avalide 150/12.
Avatar m tn TIA or transient ischemic attack, which as the name indicates there is a temporary lack of blood flow to a particular part of the brain. This usually recovers, but these people are more prone for strokes. For the TIA, if you are a hypertensive or diabetic, ensure to keep these under check. Eat healthy, a low salt and oily diet and exercise regularly. To improve blood flow to the ischemic areas plavix is indicated.
Avatar n tn s advice not information from this forum or any other forum as you probably already know. I was on plavix for more than a year and instructed not to drink alcohol for the reason I have given in the other post, if your doctor states it is okay to drink alcohol with plavix, it may be that a very small amount would not be harmful as the time required for the activity of a substance taken into the body to lose one half its initial effectiveness.

The drug is used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and to treat peripheral vascular disease and claudication. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance.
Avatar m tn My insurance is not paying for it and its cost is 280.00 where I live. The other ER Doctor sent a Prescription for Plavix which is covered. Is this a good choice? He was referred to an Internist and Urologist for prompt treatment. He is 47 and has had irregular heart beats incidents.
Avatar f tn I was put on Aggrenox/Aspirin after my stroke about 2 months ago. Does anyone on the same treatment take any kind of Vitamins/Herbs with this medication?
Avatar n tn you MUST contact your prescribing dr to get approval to stop this medication. Aggrenox, Plavix, and Aspirin must be discontinued for 7 days prior to injection and Ticlid 14 days prior to injection. Coumadin should be discontinued 3-4 days prior to injection and you will need to have blood work completed within 24 hours prior to procedure. drink 1-2 full cups water 60 minutes prior to injection. eat a LIGHT meal.
Avatar f tn My husband has been taking Plavix for 6 years and has recently been diagnosed with MDS Leukemia. I feel there may be a connection. Anyone else find this may be happening to them?
