1210142 tn?1266077031 Do I still have to take beta blockers for the rest of my life or there is another alternative- I understand they are very useful after a heart attack but I feel horrible.Statins and Plavix do not give me any trouble so far. Any opinion and advise will be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn Plavix/clopidogrel is mainly an anti-platelet drug (they are *usually* used artery-side, e.g., to prevent strokes or heart attacks). The other drugs mentioned are anticoagulants (which interfere with coagulant proteins such as Factor Xa -- they are usually used venous-side, e.g., preventing DVT after orthopedic surgery). Either type might be used for the in between, which is the heart: for AFib clotting/strokes. I don't know why your doc preferred to prescribe Plavix for DVT.

Avatar f tn I am on Plavix for my Heart Attack and my husband is on Coumadin for a blood clot he had 3 years ago 1 month after he had broken his ankle and had to have surgery. I say he should be off the Coumadin already. He went back to work full time after the broken ankle and also lost 60 lbs. He says the Plavix is just as bad.
Avatar f tn //www.drugs.com/sfx/plavix-side-effects.html Natural alternative: Nattokinase is a potent fibrinolytic (anti-clotting) enzyme extracted and highly purified from a traditional Japanese food called Natto. Nattokinase enhances our body’s natural ability to fight blood clots, and has an advantage over blood thinners because it has a prolonged effect without side effects.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I have been on Plavix for 5 years no side effects---but am wondering if I should stop. Both parents had open heart surgery and I have 3 stents at the age of 58. I am healthy, work out, chol 232 unable to take drugs for cholesterol. CAD is a problem in my family. Will Plavix keep me MI free?
Avatar m tn If you do not want to suffer a heart attack or stroke, you need to take the Plavix and aspirin. Lipitor is a cholesterol medication that have proven studies showing reducing cholesterol and reducing some cholesterol buildup already there. The medications are your life line and you need to take them as prescribed by your doctor. Are you having current side effects from the medications?
482754 tn?1341791494 I no longer have to take clopidogrel and effient wasn't around for me to use. However, I do remember reading some articles on this medication. Although it has been approved for patient use, it does have one concern. If you are on this drug and have surgery such as a bypass, it tends to cause severe bleeding, which can be fatal. Clopidrogrel (plavix) has no such problem attached to it. On the plus side, it reduces other risks dramatically and outperforms clopidogrel hands down.
Avatar f tn Why were you put on Plavix in the beginning... for heart attack or stroke? Absolutely going off of it can lead to a mini-stroke/TIA, but going odd wont CAUSE one. Unfortunately you have to go off before a biopsy as it makes your blood thinner and there is too much risk of bleeding. Don't worry too much about the TIA, most have no long standing effects unless you have a LOT of them. So you want to go back on the Plavix and DON'T miss any doses! It should work right away.
Avatar m tn Had multiple stents (4) placed four (4) years ago, two in LAD with no side effects and good nuclear and stress test results over this period. Am currently taking Plavix/Aspirin/Coreg/Altace. Need arthroscopic repair on knee but concerned over cessating of Plavix. One cardiologist recommended ending Plavix entirely, second (same practice) would rather wait for a large study about to be completed. Suggestions?
Avatar m tn Taking Plavix alone after a heart attack offers small but significant extra protection from cardiovascular problems compared with aspirin. If an individual has had a heart attack two or three years ago, and if everything is fine, one probably doesn't need this medication.....also up to about 1 year with DES implant then discontinue. The subject of platelet interaction and FDA is more inclusive that posted.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I am quite familiar with all the side effects and everything you mentioned- have done some research too. Tried to stop Plavix and almost got another heart attack- I have 3 stents and the third one is in a "sandwich"- so to make this short, I may have to be on Plavix indefinite. The paradox is that after I started Pantoprazole, my chest pains disapeared 99%.
Avatar f tn my father is feeling the same side effects. have you or your doctors come up with a resulution?
Avatar m tn Dear Doctor, Thanks for your time in reading my post and your valuable advice. My father suffered a heart attack on 18 of June and discharged on 24th. He'shome now waiting for the angiograph appointment which is fixed on the 25th of July. My father says its not a heart attack he feels fine. Today he had blood afterhe passed stool before breakfast.I want to know what tests should i be expecting to get done. Is the medication affecting his rectum ?
Avatar f tn Can you explain the breathing problem you have? and did you suffer a heart attack? when did you have the stent put in? what medication are you on? If you have been put on plavix, this can cause breathing problems in some people but is very rare as a side effect. So can beta blockers. I believe there is an alternative medication now for plavix which your Doctor could try you on.
Avatar m tn I had a heart attack and quad bypass 18 years ago, and recovered completely. 5 weeks ago I had a mild heart attack and received a stent in the one veinous graft (the 3 arterial grafts were perfectly clear). I have been placed on plavix and 6.25mg 2x/day of carvedilol - and the side effects of carvedilol is my concern. First is the feeling of lightheadedness, which was severe at first, but still remains.
4740939 tn?1358611556 I had a massive heart attack 11 months ago 3 stents placed and on Plavix, coreg lo dose aspirin, crestor and lisinopril.I have panic attacks due to he heart attack and now my doc wants me to take 10 mg Lexapro and .5 mg klonopin twice a day.I have not taken any because I am terrified of bad side effects.Any advice?
Avatar f tn I have a friend - male- 68 who had a heart attack ~ 6 years ago. He takes a beta blocker - Coreg. I've known him for 3 years. During that time, he's always had, but now it's getting worse, a slow pulse & low Blood Pressure. Last night it was 84/54 pulse - 52. and he was feeling dizzy. Called the Dr. who said to drink fluids & take something salty - like saltine crackers. I just read up on Coreg - - beta blocker, and on low blood pressure.
Avatar n tn My husband had his first heart attack at age 49. He had 4 stents put in. He was on Plavix for a year - then his cardio took him off. 5 months later he had another heart attack. He is doing fine, but they are now telling us that he will probably be on Plavix for the rest of this life. That is fine with us - I would hate to worry about another clot forming. All of his stents are the medicated ones.
Avatar m tn each episode pain seemed to be worse Awoke at 8 am some tightness put on patch tightness subsided but nausea and vomiting has returned It appears to me that the nitro is definitely helping but seeming to be needed 24/7 I also concerned that this is perhaps an onset to another heart attack, as with the 1st heart attack it seemed after the fact of us knowing that had had a heart attack, for 3 days leading up to it the signs were there we just were not aware of them.
Avatar m tn s because they were looking for a heart attack cause. Well, their heart attack diagnosis was wrong. I did NOT have a heart attack, but rather I had a stroke from having a blood clot go THROUGH my PFO to my brain (first stop after the heart). That is what had been causing my TIA's and eventually the stroke. They also found (during pre-PFO closure blood work) that I had a blood mutation inherited from my mom - called Leiden Factor V (five). It predisposes me to blood clots. Swell!
Avatar m tn ” Instead of telling you about Nattokinase (a natural and healthy blood clot dissolver derived from a Japanese food, natto) your doctor probably told you about Plavix. Plavix is one of the top-selling drugs in the world. It earns more than a billion dollars a year for Bristol-Myers. Your doctor regularly sees ads by this pharmaceutical giant and is visited by sales reps who tout the supposed benefits of Plavix. Plavix is also advertised on television.
Avatar m tn I HAD HEART ATTACK 1 YR AGO BEEN ON PLAVIX AND 325 MG ASPRIN BECAUSE I HAVE 3 STENTS DRUG ELUDING STENTS I BURSE ALL THE TIME LARGE AND SMALL FROM MY FACE TO FEET FOR NO REASON ALSO HAVE BALANCE PROBLEMS COULD MY MEDS CAUSE THIS
255163 tn?1376869746 Do you have heart disease, or have you ever had a heart attack? This can be a little tricky because the statin mayvery well be helping with keeping your numbers down. Why does your Dr want you off of it? Are you having side effects?
Avatar n tn My husband had his first heart attack in November 2006 and took plavix for one year. At that time the doctor took him off plavix and then just four short months later he suffered another heart attack with much heart damage. We questioned this as he had placed two stents at the time of his first heart attack, but he said the new thinking was to stop the plavix after one year. He did no further testing or anything.
