my 74 year old father has been taken 5mg of warifin and low dose asprin (81mg) for along time know,..he had a stent put in about 5 years ago and still contiues to combine the two....how does this sound to you guy's??

You must get a bleeding time, clotting time done and must reduce the dose or go off Plavix and take an alternative, after consulting a cardiologist. If Plavix is not the only cause then bruises could be due to internal bleeding from torn capillaries. The other possible reasons are low platelet count, clotting disorders, fragile spider veins, deep vein thrombus, deficiency of Vitamin B12, folic acid, or Vit K, a liver disease or certain cancers (less likely in your case).

Well, plavix is coming off patent next year so the cost should come down substantially. In my case though, I got a DES placed in my LAD in December 2009. Been on Plavix for 6 years for 5 DES stents. Very recent, I had an event monitor for 3 years of ongoing, sporadic irregular heart beats that causes 5-8 seconds of dizziness/lightheadedness. Do not stop taking Plavix (Clopidogrel) without consulting the doctor who prescribed it! Plavix inhibits platelet bloodclotting function, to prevent (life-threatening) blood clots (in i.e. cardiovascular stents). Often dental work can be done without stopping Plavix. Consult your dentist for that. When you stop taking Plavix, complete recovery of platelet function takes about 7 days after the last dose.

I have been taking Plavix for 2 years after MI back in 2009/100% oclusion of the left ventrical artery/.. The cardiologist thinks it is safe to stop it now. Plavix has not been found to be any more effective than a low dose of aspirin for anti-platlet medication. However, the preferred protocol after drug eluding stent implant is a year or so with aspirin and plavix regimen for the treatment of the probability of restenosis (blood clots) at the site of the stent. The morning of discharge she received her heparin 5000 units SQ . She did not start her plavix or ASA dose before stopping her Heparin. MY MOM died 3 days after discharge of a massive PE. Hi Ray....I agree w/ed34. Warfarin is generic for Coumadin. Since it is the generic for brand Coumadin it is given in same dose. Mom took Warfarin for the 1st three months after her event. Month four, the pharmacy was temporarily out so I took brand name Coumadin (more$$, of course ;-) but it was the exact same dose. Month five, she was back on Warfarin. Best to you...

Less needyness, less argumentative, is short we had our mom back for the week, and a couple of hours ago after her second dose of Plavix she went right back into the person weve been living with for the last three years, its enough to make me cry :( after consulting with her PCP i thini we will be experimenting taking her off the thinners to see how it effects her cognitively.
