plavix

Avatar f tn Hello I'm going to be having 3 stents inserted into my arteries in a couple of weeks time. My specialist (who will be carrying out the procedure) has asked me to take 600mg of clopigdogrel and 600mg of asprin the night before the procedure, and I'm a bit worried about doing this. Is it normal practice? I currently take 75mg of clopidogrel every day.
Avatar n tn my 74 year old father has been taken 5mg of warifin and low dose asprin (81mg) for along time know,..he had a stent put in about 5 years ago and still contiues to combine the two....how does this sound to you guy's??
255163 tn?1376869746 I had to have a stent put in and my doc put me on plavix again as well as up my asperin dose to a full. He told me he wanted me on the plavix for at least a year. Come May I'll be able to lower the asperin dose and next Nov. I'll be off the plavix. It's ashame your doc's can't communicate with each other. Maybe you could have them contact each other.
Avatar n tn Do not stop taking Plavix (Clopidogrel) without consulting the doctor who prescribed it! Plavix inhibits platelet bloodclotting function, to prevent (life-threatening) blood clots (in i.e. cardiovascular stents). Often dental work can be done without stopping Plavix. Consult your dentist for that. When you stop taking Plavix, complete recovery of platelet function takes about 7 days after the last dose.
Avatar m tn I had 2 stents (RCA & LAD) July, 2012 at CCF. Have been on Plavix for 13 months and find I need Hernia surgery now as I am having having many problems due to the Hernia. What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
Avatar n tn Plavix has not been found to be any more effective than a low dose of aspirin for anti-platlet medication. However, the preferred protocol after drug eluding stent implant is a year or so with aspirin and plavix regimen for the treatment of the probability of restenosis (blood clots) at the site of the stent. No anti-platlet medication can off set the deleterious effects of nicotine, and small vessels are especially vulnerable for blood flow problem.
Avatar m tn ) In the UK, Aspirin / Plavix is normally 75mg each daily. Plavix is given minimum 2-3 years now and in many cases has been decided it's best for life, depending on the patient. I have no idea what the circumstances are that decide 'life' but I have a couple of friends who have been told they will never be off the drug. I've been told I will be reviewed in 2 years. Maybe it's a cardiologist decision rather than a country guideline?
Avatar m tn Plavix will be quite costly for us on a fixed income. Can coumadin (warfarin) be substituted for plavix?
Avatar n tn Been on Plavix for 6 years for 5 DES stents. Very recent, I had an event monitor for 3 years of ongoing, sporadic irregular heart beats that causes 5-8 seconds of dizziness/lightheadedness. Finally caught it on the event Monitor. Doctor said monitor showed Atrial flutter in the upper chambers of heart. Told me to get off the Plavix and she would RX Pradexa which is like coumadin.(never been on coumadin or heparin) I am 74 years old and also take Nexium, Crestor, Avalide 150/12.
Avatar n tn The morning of discharge she received her heparin 5000 units SQ . She did not start her plavix or ASA dose before stopping her Heparin. MY MOM died 3 days after discharge of a massive PE. I'm wondering why she wasn't started on coumadin? Any thoughts? This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/254168'>Plavix vs Coumadin</a>.
Avatar f tn Hi Ray....I agree w/ed34. Warfarin is generic for Coumadin. Since it is the generic for brand Coumadin it is given in same dose. Mom took Warfarin for the 1st three months after her event. Month four, the pharmacy was temporarily out so I took brand name Coumadin (more$$, of course ;-) but it was the exact same dose. Month five, she was back on Warfarin. Best to you...

315318 tn?1353251800 Well, plavix is coming off patent next year so the cost should come down substantially. In my case though, I got a DES placed in my LAD in December 2009. My cardio said, I am not responsive to Plavix, but not to worry. Start taking this new related medication called Effient. Effient, however, comes with greater chance of bleeding and it is expensive.
329994 tn?1301663248 You must get a bleeding time, clotting time done and must reduce the dose or go off Plavix and take an alternative, after consulting a cardiologist. If Plavix is not the only cause then bruises could be due to internal bleeding from torn capillaries. The other possible reasons are low platelet count, clotting disorders, fragile spider veins, deep vein thrombus, deficiency of Vitamin B12, folic acid, or Vit K, a liver disease or certain cancers (less likely in your case).
Avatar n tn First stent and the second time, I developed allergic reaction to Plavix, second time with Ticlid, had 2 small seisures, tried Plavix again with Benadryl, this time developed intercranial bleeding. Angina symptoms have reoccured, but cardiologists will not tell me what I can do if I cannot take blood thinners (I have allergic reactions or bad reactions to almost all meds). I'm just told, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Avatar n tn Small dose aspirin is fine to take with Plavix. Plavix is good so that you do not develop blood clots especially if you have coated stents. Some doctors recommend 6 months to a year on Plavix and some recommend for life. Plavix will help to avoid having heart attacks and strokes. The blood in your mouth is most likely because of the Plavix along with the bruising. It is the side effects. The circulation is from your heart medication and heart medication makes you tired.
Avatar m tn Since then I have been on Plavix and low dose aspirin. I have never had a b/p problem or a heart issue before my blockages were discovered. I keep reading all this information about how long to take the Plavix. There are so many studies and each has a different recommendation. My cardiologist said that I can discontinue. It is sounding to me that it is a gamble any direction you go.
Avatar f tn I had an MI in '05, and had a RCA stent placed. I was on plavix apox. 4 yrs because of family hx and my paranoia of another MI. I recently have been experiencing tingling and numbness in my hands upon awaking and have noticed small spider veins appearing on my thighs. I am a nurse on a MedSurg unit. I am concerned that my stent is becoming occulded. My doctor took me off plavix Jan'10 and kept me on 325 Aspirin.
Avatar m tn The other night I was given 50 mg Lopressor, plavix, and lovenox, as I thought and the hospital thought I was having a cardiac event. I already take 25 mg atenolol. I wasn't having event, but non-specific chest pain. That was Monday night. Now I wake up with my heart racing and blood pressure rising. I also wake up exhausted. I think this is from coming off of the Lopressor. I called my MD and they said just go back to regular dose of atenolol.
Avatar m tn The recommended treatment for DES implants is dual therapy of aspirin and plavix up to a year. Combining plavix and aspirin increases the risk of bleeding vs. aspirin alone in patients treated for more than a brief period of time. That is the regimen followed for my DES implant. f you are in this category a prior MI and unstable angina:" In the CAPRIE trial, clopidogrel (plavix) was equivalent to aspirin for patients with a recent (but not acute) MI.
Avatar m tn m self-diagnosing and is not willing to make this change in the type of B12 or in the loading dose. I AM NOT going to regress and go back to the way I was feeling. I am a very active person and I am a triathlete. Both my personal, professional and married life are being negatively affected. I am aware that you can order B12 injections (hydroxy and methyl) from Canada, New Zealand, and India; however, I am wary to circumvent the health system and possibly inject myself with heaven knows what!
1210142 tn?1266077031 I think plavix is very important for CAD sufferers. The half life of plavix is short anyway, so if it came to some emergency, it wouldn't take long for the effect to wear off.
161427 tn?1229911282 Less needyness, less argumentative, is short we had our mom back for the week, and a couple of hours ago after her second dose of Plavix she went right back into the person weve been living with for the last three years, its enough to make me cry :( after consulting with her PCP i thini we will be experimenting taking her off the thinners to see how it effects her cognitively.
Avatar m tn The best thing you can do is take your aspirin and plavix (or alternative). You should never miss a dose and never stop it unless approved by your cardiologist. To my knowledge, there is no specific diet that aids in this. However, diet, exercise, a positive mindset, keeping your blood pressure/cholesterol under control and getting screened for diabetes can all help in preventing further progression of heart disease. You should also qualify for cardiac rehabilitation.
Avatar n tn Prior to that I had virtually no symptoms, and no risk factors except for stress, and the cause of the heart attack was a mystery to everyone. I stayed on plavix for 6 months (along with low-dose aspirin which I continue to take) and couldn't stand the side effect of severe bruising. My recovery was slow in that I continued to experience lots of chest pain with stress, and was eventually diagnosed with GERD, which I believe was caused either by the stents or the plavix.
