Common Questions and Answers about Plavix gi bleed

plavix

Avatar m tn I have had 5 different conflicting reports about what was to happen regarding Coumadin, ranging from total d/c, to hold for 1 week, to hold for 1 day, to resume. TPA was withheld after this stroke, because of GI bleed. Why would it have been OK to give TPA last year after an upper GI bleed when many units of blood were needed, but it was NOT OK for TPA this stroke following colitis with trace blood? Why would Coumadin have been held at all after the colonoscopy?
Avatar m tn Plavix will be quite costly for us on a fixed income. Can coumadin (warfarin) be substituted for plavix?
Avatar n tn What would be the proper way to go about this? Did the Plavix cause the bleed or could it have been something small that would have just resolved itself without issue had he not been on Plavix? I have read so often that you should not take Plavix and aspirin, but it seems to also be common to prescribe both plavix and aspirin in certain situations. I am worried and confused. Thanks.
Avatar m tn A drop from 12 to 10 is substantial and it must be quite a bleed. It isn't easy to see the source of a bleed, even blood collected in the body. Are they saying it's the plavix? Are his white cells elevated in the blood indicating any kind of immune response to something such as an infection?
Avatar m tn ) In the UK, Aspirin / Plavix is normally 75mg each daily. Plavix is given minimum 2-3 years now and in many cases has been decided it's best for life, depending on the patient. I have no idea what the circumstances are that decide 'life' but I have a couple of friends who have been told they will never be off the drug. I've been told I will be reviewed in 2 years. Maybe it's a cardiologist decision rather than a country guideline?
Avatar m tn Ask your Cardio or GI doc. They should be able to give you the infor you need. I am taking plavix and was on nexium. Had to go off it because of the FDA findings. Am now on pepcid You can also look on the FDA website for more info on that. Good luck.
1962649 tn?1332444851 My husband is on coumadin, plavix & asprin [ 325 dose ] because he has a-fib & stents. A few days ago he got a nosebleed and we went to the ER. at the ER they checked his INR and it was 2.7. The coumadin clinic wants it between 2 & 3 but 2.7 is at the high end. Do you think he can omit the aspirin ? Or should I call the doctor? If he omitted the aspirin would that would put him a little lower in his INR like 2.1 or 2.2 ? that seems like a safer number. anyone ever go through this?
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm just about two & a half weeks post cardiac ablation for focal atrial tachycardia. Has anyone been on Colperdogil (also known as Plavix). I'm allergic to aspirin so I'm on this drug instead, for 6 weeks. My question is...what side effects did you get? My BP is now 85/50 & I think the drug has caused it to drop so low. My BP dropped to 89/53 as soon as they gave me the drug in recovery.
1213000 tn?1280463161 s the fact that I am on Plasurgrel, which I guess is more efficient at thinning the blood than Plavix and, while a remote possibility, a GI bleed would potentially be catastrophic.
Avatar f tn Drug side effects can occur years later which is why you see many drugs being pulled of the market. Clinical trials run for an average of 8 weeks on healthy adults. Plavix side effects: "Gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort has occurred in 27.1% of patients (compared with 29.8% of patients who were treated with aspirin in comparative trials). Other GI side effects have included diarrhea in 4.5%, dyspepsia in 5.2%, nausea in 3.4%, and abdominal pain in 5.6% of patients.
Avatar n tn He is on Namenda and Plavix, is it possible that Adderall could help with his short term memory loss. Before the accident he lived on his own.
482517 tn?1208551378 After a DES in my Circumflex, how long is it neccessary to take plavix? Will aspirin do the trick as well? Dr says we can stop it "...if I want to take my chances..." (not a good answer) What's the longest anyone's taken (taking) it w/no probs? Lastly, if I have restenosis, or a throw a clot in my Circumflex, would it be over or is that a "secondary" area?
Avatar f tn You should not be on Nexium while on Plavix. Print out the info from Google and show it to your GI Doc. Ask him to give you another med for your Gerd. It's mostly the PPI's that should not be taken with Plavix, I don't think all of them, I'm not really sure, but your GI Doc should advise you on what other kind to take.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I think plavix is very important for CAD sufferers. The half life of plavix is short anyway, so if it came to some emergency, it wouldn't take long for the effect to wear off.
Avatar f tn It's normal to bleed for awhile after a hysterectomy but 12 days is a little longer than usual. I think the Plavix may have something to do with it. You need to see your Dr to find out what's going on. Let us know and take care.
976897 tn?1379167602 Just to complicate the Plavix/generic Plavix issue, I was told to stop taking Plavix after bypass surgery, and the bruising immediately became a bigger issue and remains a bigger problem today. I'm not sure the bruising/bleeding issue is completely understood. I still take 80mg aspirin, and wonder if that is the cause. pippi331, sometimes one is allergic to the filler with generic drugs. I'd sure report your situation as soon as possible.
Avatar n tn and so far have not come up with a diagnosis. She was on Plavix for a blockage that was treated with a stint about 6 months ago, so now they are taking her off of Plavix for 7 days so that she can have a liver biopsy done. We are very concerned as she is very jaundiced, and swollen. Doctors are indicating that this could be a rare autoimmune disorder of the liver. Has anyone else ever heard of anything like this? Our patience is running thin....she's 34 now by the way. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Warfarin is a powerful anticoagulant and I think your stents should be fine with withdrawal of the plavix. The main concern here is obviously an internal bleed which can be life threatening. My opinion is that the balance for your safety has to be right, and the cardiologist has done that. I very much doubt if your stents will suffer.
Avatar f tn They just took me off and now started Plavix and aspirin. Can you take the birth control pill with Plavix? My periods are now horrible with major bleeding and I only stopped for a few days and started my period again and it has not stopped and heavy bleeding with clots. Getting back on the birth control pill I feel sure would fix that. This discussion is related to Plavix side effects.
Avatar m tn A recent plavix test showed it was not helping. Now my PA has me on 150 MG Plavix. I really bleed when scratched now. Should I take the Plavix test again to see if the increased dossage is working? I am also taking 325 mg asprin.
315318 tn?1353251800 Well, plavix is coming off patent next year so the cost should come down substantially. In my case though, I got a DES placed in my LAD in December 2009. My cardio said, I am not responsive to Plavix, but not to worry. Start taking this new related medication called Effient. Effient, however, comes with greater chance of bleeding and it is expensive.
Avatar f tn I was hospitalized for a GI bleed from a gastric ulcer which caused acute blood anemia about 4 weeks ago. After I was discharged I started to feel better and get my energy back after 2 weeks. (I received 2 units of blood in the hospital). But, in the past week I have increasing started to get fatigued and only able to do limited min. activities. I also get easily short of breath when I exert too much.
Avatar m tn In the UK many patients are prescribed Plavix for 18 mths to be on the safe side. The drawback with Plavix, especially if taken with Aspirin, causes you to bleed for much longer when an artery is damaged, through surgery or an accident. I had a decision last over a year ago when I developed a bad tooth which needed extracting. My GP said that I would have to bear the pain because the heart is far more important than the tooth. Easy to say when you get constant toothache.
Avatar m tn I am on Plavix and aspirin. Will the injection site bleed much?
