Common Questions and Answers about Plavix dosage time

plavix

Avatar f tn I was on plavix for 18 months for my first stent and it never formed clots, but I believe there have been cases where it has happened. IF clots are going to form, they are usually very quickly as the plavix wears off. You don't have to ween off plavix, you simply stop it. It isn't a medication that affects your metabolism or mental state. Is it your general Doctor or Cardiologist who has stopped the medication? In the UK we are told we will be on Plavix 2-3 years or even possibly life.
Avatar f tn However, there have been a few alarms raised from the US saying some people have formed clots very soon after plavix was stopped. This is now a strange time because some Doctors feel its best to take it for life, some believe 3 years, some 2 years and some 1 year. I had 5 stents put in last year and today I questioned my cardiologist if I can stop taking this medication. The answer was NO, because they feel safer in the knowledge that I am taking it, especially having had so many stents.
Avatar n tn First stent and the second time, I developed allergic reaction to Plavix, second time with Ticlid, had 2 small seisures, tried Plavix again with Benadryl, this time developed intercranial bleeding. Angina symptoms have reoccured, but cardiologists will not tell me what I can do if I cannot take blood thinners (I have allergic reactions or bad reactions to almost all meds). I'm just told, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
161427 tn?1229911282 Can Plavix contribute to confusion and forgetfulness in the elderly? Synopsis: Every time Plavix is removed from my mother-in-law in order to perform a surgical-type procedure, her cognition improves dramatically (at least from my point of view from halfway across the country, "popping in" from time to time by telephone. History and Detail: My mother-in-law is 84 years old and living near her daughter in a nursing home in Boulder, Colorado, a very dry climate with thin air.
Avatar f tn I am confused because the surgeon who saw me for the breast infection said he could aspirate the large, infected cyst in his office that day even though, at that time, I was on both Coumadin and Plavix. The cardiologist said I shouldn't have the biopsy until the middle of August. Several weeks ago, the cardiologist took me off of Coumadin and added two 81-mg, aspirin and recommended that I stay on the Plavix for the biopsy.
Avatar f tn Hi Ray....I agree w/ed34. Warfarin is generic for Coumadin. Since it is the generic for brand Coumadin it is given in same dose. Mom took Warfarin for the 1st three months after her event. Month four, the pharmacy was temporarily out so I took brand name Coumadin (more$$, of course ;-) but it was the exact same dose. Month five, she was back on Warfarin. Best to you...
Avatar n tn In 2007, at age 54, I had a heart attack and received 6 drug-eluding stents in one artery. Prior to that I had virtually no symptoms, and no risk factors except for stress, and the cause of the heart attack was a mystery to everyone. I stayed on plavix for 6 months (along with low-dose aspirin which I continue to take) and couldn't stand the side effect of severe bruising.
920737 tn?1250348210 Was switched from lisinopril to amlodipine. Began Plavix. Was told that I had so many blockages/narrowings that additional surgical intervention would be fruitless. Had multiple brief blackout spells at 5 mg dosage. Reduced dosage to 2.5 mg, still having significant issues with light-headedness and angina. Reluctant to drive. I cannot tolerate beta blockers (metoprolol among others) due to similar problems with fainting and falling.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your replies -- I called the doctor yesterday and let his nurse know I was having chest pains. She says to keep taking isosorbide, a long-acting nitro, which is why I didn't take nitro for the chest pain, for one thing the pain didn't feel too strong, but mostly because I knew I already had nitro in me and didn't want to make a big headache. Does that make any sense? Maybe I should try it anyway, to see if it does indicate blockage.
Avatar m tn The FDA is actively looking at data on other PPIs, but at this time the FDA is not warning patients to avoid taking Plavix along with other PPIs. It seems there is so much misinformation, changing opinions, etc. does not bode well for confidence in the medication. I wouldn't want a mega dose of anti-platelet meds. It took hours to stop bleeding from a dentist visit, and I'm on a baby aspirin. The risk of bleeding internally (bowel, stomach, etc.
Avatar m tn Did your doctor determine that you risk was so high that he wanted you on Plavix long term, these are the only circumstances that using Plavix long term would be.
Avatar m tn I had a colonoscopy this morning for diagnostic reasons and I am full of polops, but they couldnt take any out while I am on Plavix...Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
Avatar m tn Lately, there have many posts related to the duration of plavix and it seems patients are given plavix for a long period of time. It has been my understanding from what I have read and my experience, plavix is recommended for individuals that have a drug eluding stent to help prevent clots for up to a year. That has been my experience. DES when compared to bare metal stent implants have an increase of clots and restenosis for a period of one year...
Avatar m tn The contrast is quite amazing when open heart surgery is given to patients who have taken their daily dosage of both aspirin/plavix and very often clexane on top. It makes one wonder how they heal.
Avatar n tn I think you need to show your Doctor, and certainly nobody here will tell you to stop taking any medication against your Doctors wishes. You could speak with your Doctor and ask if either Aspirin or Plavix can be stopped, but definitely one must be taken for life. Each time I've taken Plavix, I've been told to stop after 1 year to 18 months because there is no evidence to support benefits after that time.
315318 tn?1353251800 If like Plavix, I have to take Effient for life then I guess, unlike Plavix, I will be paying a lot of out of pocket expense for a long time to come ! This discussion is related to Plavix dosing following drug eluting stents.

Avatar n tn At that time the doctor took him off plavix and then just four short months later he suffered another heart attack with much heart damage. We questioned this as he had placed two stents at the time of his first heart attack, but he said the new thinking was to stop the plavix after one year. He did no further testing or anything.
Avatar n tn After that length of time it is generally believed to discontinue plavix but remain on aspirin. Although plavix and aspirin are anti-platelet agents, plavix has a different mechanism of action that seems to be specialized for drug eluding stent to prevent restenosis. Laviquin is an antibiotic medication! and there is a class-action suit against Laviqiin providers that is currently unresolved.
1210142 tn?1266077031 do I stop it abruptly or over period of time? Do I add any supplements that thin the blood on the top of the 81 mg of Aspirin or just increase the dose of Aspirin?
Avatar m tn I had 2 stents put in about 5 months ago and started on Plavix.. Since that time, I have had problems with chest pain and stomach pain, along with a host of other pains. I had a second cath to look at my heart because of the chest pain and the heart was said to be fine. Having a hard time sleeping at night and anxiety is building because of the pain. Anyone else have these issues? Also, is there a blood test that can be given to see if the Plavix even works for my gene make-up?
Avatar n tn Small dose aspirin is fine to take with Plavix. Plavix is good so that you do not develop blood clots especially if you have coated stents. Some doctors recommend 6 months to a year on Plavix and some recommend for life. Plavix will help to avoid having heart attacks and strokes. The blood in your mouth is most likely because of the Plavix along with the bruising. It is the side effects. The circulation is from your heart medication and heart medication makes you tired.
Avatar m tn Did you stop it abruptly or over period of time? Did you have a heart attack and DES and were put on Plavix because of this and do you take 81 or 325 mg of Aspirin?
