Plavix before surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix before surgery

plavix

I recently had surgery and was told to stop the plavix for a week before surgery. How soon after surgery should I resume taking the plavix? Thank you.
I had indeed bleeding issues spent a long, long time in the hospital. Recently I had to have a foot surgery and was taken off Plavix a week before the surgery, but was advised to stay on 81mg aspirin as I have significant heart trouble. With just the aspirin, I had to wear an ankle cuff during the foot surgery to suppress the bleeding.
My heart Dr will not let me go off the plavix and my surgeon will not do the surgery while on plavix. What happens in a situation like this?. I am between a rock and a hard place. If neither Dr gives in what do I do? If I have an attack and end up in the ER wouldn't they have to do emergency sugery?. Does this mean that anyone on plavix can never have surgery unless it's an ermergency. What is your opinion on going off plavix temporarily for surgery. I would welcome anyones advice.
Jan. 06 I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, before I was to be cleared I had to have a stress test...The doctors found a blood flow problem and found I had 4 blockages...I had 3 medicated stents put in and the fourth was 100% blocked, doctors were not overly concerned as they have noted that in prior cases the artery where that blockage is have branched off and created a new entrance to the heart...Here I am 2 years later, still needing hip replacement...
My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
isn't it normal to stopped plavix and asprin before an open heart surgery to unblocked clogs on an 84 year old weak woman
if you have insulin dependant diabetes I've been told to stop Plavix 1 to 2 weeks before surgery
As for Plavix, it inhibits platelet aggregration, you may need to get off the Plavix about 7 days before an invasive surgery and an epidural may be considered an equivalent. I recommend you talk to your doc and/or pharmacist and put together a pros and cons list after consulting with your doc and make sure you get clear instructions when to go off the medicines if you really need an epidural during labor/delivery.
The nurse gave plavix 75 mg by mistake cause the hospital pharmacist made a mistake on the medication record. It was a single dose the day before surgery. My dad had some oozing from his wound so they took him back to surgery but found he had other blockages. He was in ICU for a few days and now recovering nicely on the floor. Do you think the Plavix hurt him or made a difference in his recovery?
Can't argue with success. Interesting that I had triple bypass surgery, and was off plavix for ONE day before the procedure. I guess a lot of it is just doctors covering their collective *****.
Hi, the bruising could be due to plavix. Clopidogrel (Plavix) is a mainstay in the treatment of patients receiving endovascular prostheses, so you may need antiplatelet medications indefinitely. The other alternatives to plavix are prasugrel and ticagrelor. Aspirin is also a platelet inhibitor. Continue with your medications and you can discuss the alternatives with your doctor when you meet him. Regards.
I did a lot of research on Ticlid before starting it and did not find any more problems with that drug as opposed to Plavix or Aggrenox. I wish you well in your continued search and the possibility of getting rid of the daily flu............Let me know if I can help further. Thanks.
Surgeons don't like Plavix, of course, but certainly know how to deal with those who need immediate surgery. Plavix is in my opinion a life saver, I'm back taking 150 mg as well as 325mg of aspirin. Yes, Like Ed, I bleed when my cat accidently scratches me or I nick myself shaving, and I bruise easily, but Tony, I'm still standing. I'd suggest you not play with your health, a lot of us pole-vaulted over mouse turds. Thanks for posting, keep us informed and best wishes.
He was prescribed plavix. The surgeon said as a rule after this type of surgery he has to be faithful at the very least one year. But do not stop taking it until you consult with your Dr. my husband did just that and told me he went to talk to this Dr. and Doc asked how are you feeling ? my husband said Great. To my surprise Dr. Williams in Vallejo was very complaisant. Not even one mention of the partial blockage. He told my husband that it was my husbands choice to stop.

I absolutely know from now on I will specifically ask for stitches whenever I need surgery. I, too, had a nerve block before that surgery - it was a really strange sensation - seeing my arm, but being completely unable to move or feel it! I remember after anesthesia came and gave me the nerve block, as they were wheeling me into surgery, the nurse asked if I was in any pain and I could quite honestly say to her "For the first time in I can't even remember how long, NO!!
Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
I talked to my cardiologist and he said he had talked to the surgeon and for me to come off the Plavix for 10 days. Three weeks after stopping Plavix for the surgery I was back in the cath lab and had a stint inserted. I do not come off Plavix for any reason now. I have 6 stints in my heart and one in my neck. Last week they would not remove my cataract because it was only 3 months since I had 2 stints inserted in my heart. Could not do it until six months had passed. I had open heart in 2004.
His cardiologist insists that he stay on Plavix for at least six months before any other surgery. He is in desperate need of a total knee replacement and is barely walking. We do not want him to lose the ability to walk and want to remove his pain and get him off the powerful pain drugs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Having found this report, and having gallbladder surgery scheduled for 2/5/09, I am very worried about this rebound affect. My surgeon wants me to stop Plavix for 9 days before this surgery. I have taken Plavix since an mi and stroke in June of 2003. I have been told that I will be on it for life. Have any of you continued plavix through minor surgery like gallbladder surgery (the keyhole type)?
i continued on warfarin 12 mg for 6 mnths after the surgery then now im on plavix for 3 mnths and aspirin for a life time..in have a 9-hr flight next month and my dr told me that i must take a clexane injection...im afraid of the reaction of cleaxane and plavix together might cause me internal bleeding or something..is there any chance of this??
How long must one be on Plavix to keep coated stents open? I need knee surgery badly and need to be off Plavix for 5 days prior to surgery. Cardiologist has vetoed all surgery. I have 3 stents and with 2 of the stents, I have been on Plavix for 15 months and the last stent..on Plavix for 9 months. What is Cleveland Clinics thoughts on this? Question #3. Recent CT scan of chest shows calcification in the Lad and mid RCA.
This is why there is concern. 3) If a patient stops Plavix, is there something that can be taken before or after stopping--like more aspirin--that might reduce clotting problems? No answer. Generally, patients need to stop plavix because of bleeding problems which would entail stopping all blood thinners. 4) Is there a blood test to see if a patient is more at risk for clotting problems? There are lots of test looking at clotting and thrombosis.

I now need to have major back surgery and the neurosurgeon wants me to go off plavix for 6 weeks prior. I have read the pharmacuetical companies recommendation for coming off 5 days before, but I do not trust them. Does anyone know of any recent data to support either coming off plavix or not? Thanks for your help.

we STOP PLAVIX, AND SWITCH TO HEPARINE OR TO COUMADINE, IN THE CASE OF HEPARINE WE CAN STOP IT THEN HOURS BEFORE SURGERY. IN CASE OF COUAMDINE 3 DAYS ARE SUFFICIENT.. PLEASE NOTICE THAT WHEN SURGERY IS A MOST IT SHOULD BE DONE AND ALWAYS UNDER SUPERVISION OF ANESTHESIOLOGIST.
