Plavix and vitamin k

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and vitamin k

plavix

Avatar n tn I have heard that there is some problem mixing vitamin K with a blood thinner. I am taking 75 mg of plavix and cannot find anything about the vitamin K interaction. I need additional calcium, and the brand I am looking at taking would give me 40mcg of vitamin K. Is this safe or a problem? Where can I find how much vitamin K is in a serving of broccoli or spinich?
Avatar m tn Even if there is no direct interaction between Plavix and Vitamin K, is it known whether vitamin K will still act to promote clotting in the presence of Plavix?
Avatar f tn I was told to stay away from vitamin K because this effects the coumadin and my pro time. I have read that a lack of vitamin K can cause the brown "age spots" on the skin.
Avatar f tn If a persons blood is thick, it is best to take the medication or if the person has an irregular heart beat which increases the risk of heart attack and strokes by causes blood clots. Make sure not to take Vitamin K when on blood thinners. Vitamin K acts as a blood thinner and is found in some calcium chewables with the Vitamin D.
329994 tn?1301663248 You must get a bleeding time, clotting time done and must reduce the dose or go off Plavix and take an alternative, after consulting a cardiologist. If Plavix is not the only cause then bruises could be due to internal bleeding from torn capillaries. The other possible reasons are low platelet count, clotting disorders, fragile spider veins, deep vein thrombus, deficiency of Vitamin B12, folic acid, or Vit K, a liver disease or certain cancers (less likely in your case).
Avatar m tn I already know that high amounts of certain supplements like vitamin K and iron should be avoided when taking blood thinners but what other vitamins or minerals should be avoided? I've read that high amounts of vitamin E can cause problems but since the dose will be devided she'll only be getting around 133 iu.
Avatar n tn > Coumadin and Plavix are both anti-platelet agents as well as aspirin that might just be a typo, but I'll go ahead anyway and point out that Coumadin is not antiplatelet, it's an anticoagulant. It works as a vitamin K antagonist, and vit K is necessary for the synthesis of prothrombin and Factor VII.
Avatar m tn He just needs to eat a diet that is reasonably consistent in its levels of vitamin K. If he is getting his INR checked at least once a month, and the INR is relatively stable, then his diet is appropriate, as far as his taking Coumadin is concerned. The INR will show it, if there is a problem with his diet. He has been on Coumadin since 2002, so if there have been no major problems with his INR so far, then I wouldn't worry about it.
1274110 tn?1270788561 I am on plavix also and was taking nexium for gerd. My cardiologist told me to go off the nexium because the FDA has found that the nexium or any of the PPI's inhibits the plavix from working properly. I am now on pepcid instead of nexium. I am curious to find out if your cardio's had mentioned this to you. Protonix is in the same group of PPI's as nexium. Google plavix and ppi's or go on the FDA website. You will read a lot about the two meds. Just for your info.
Avatar f tn Just got an email from the np that said she had talked to the doctor and wants to put me on Vitamin k 10 mg daily. I gave her the pharmacy number and asked her to send me the lab results. Still waiting to hear back. Have any of you had to do this before? What is the Vitamin k used for? Thanks!
Avatar m tn Vitamin K is an essential vitamin but too much can be toxic to the liver. Vitamin K2 has shown more benefits to the liver, particularly in the area of fibrosis, also known as MK7, you can read more about it on the life extention web site. I think the verdict is out on whether this is a good thing or not for liver patients, and especially while on tx the risks may outweigh the benfit..
1210142 tn?1266077031 I have read a lot about the interaction between Plavix and PPI’s but he thinks only Omeprazole have more effect on Plavix, not Pantoprazole. Please, let me know what your opinion is and have you heard about any interaction between those two? I don’t need an additional heart attack.
Avatar f tn Could Plavix and asprin be used together to help with stroke prevention or is Plavix just as dangerous and Xeralto and Pradaxa?
Avatar n tn Yes I did see some about vitamin K but they were years ago and I was waiting to see if this new 'knowledge' would hit the medical community. Nothing so far, not even a hint. So, I am wondering if the results are as really as stated, but who knows. All my blood tests haven't revealed any issues yet regarding vitamin K and so the question is, are all inhabitants of developed countries deficient which we have regarded as normal levels?
1962649 tn?1332444851 Aspirin helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by inhibiting the production of thromboxane, a chemical that causes platelets to stick. Coumadin acts by inhibiting vitamin K and the clotting mechanism. So, stopping aspirin might not have an effect on the INR. But combined both the medications have an effect on bleeding. So, please contact your concerned physician at the earliest. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I have read of using a constant daily low dosage (100mcg) of vitamin K to resolve INR instability the theory being that the instability may be due to a vitamin K deficiency and the constant dosage gives a bias level for the coumadin to work against. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?
Avatar f tn Coumadin is one of the all-time worst "hangovers" from the "heyday" of patent medications: No matter how many alternatives there are for it, it just won't go away. It certainly thins the blood, but it does so by "poisoning and killing off" the vitamin K in your body. Over enough time, the near-total lack of vitamin K will (not "could" -- WILL) cause osteoporosis, arterial calcification, cognitive malfunction, and many, many other problems.
Avatar m tn My Cardiologist agreed to stop both plavix and aspirin 48 hours before, then start 24 hours after. I had no problems.
Avatar n tn Had stint put in my heart march 2016, and was put on low asprin long term and plavix 3 months (june 2016), after I had stint put in. Nov 2016 I woke up and my left eye - my sight was a deep deep dark grey. I knew clot was back, it lasted 45 min...Time I got dressed and went to the emergency doctor, it wasn't there...I've been put on Plavix every since with low doses of baby asprin. I bruise like some one beat the hell out of me.
Avatar f tn My husband was diagnosed with PAD in Feb 2009, had PTA with stenosis in R Femoral artery, Plavix & ASA 81mg daily for 2 weeks post-op. 1 year later in Feb 2010 had recurrent claudication and another PTA in which stent was still viable. Increased Plavix & ASA 81mg to daily, indefinitely... Oct 2010 developed vertigo and high bp averaging 150/115...diagnosed with labyrinthitis, given steroid injection, Meclizine 25mg for acute vertigo, and Diazepam 2mg for sleep depriving vertigo.
Avatar f tn Taking Plavix indicates you have drug eluding stents. The a drug-eluting stents (DES) basically have a special drug that delivers the agent right at the site of the injury to the artery and prevents much of the scar tissue from recurring. Compared to the alternative bare metal stent and it is known that the likelihood of the arteries re-narrowing after drug-eluting stents are much less than after bare metal stents.
Avatar f tn I think those who are opposed to a vitamin K shot for baby should do more research. Vitamin K can prevent a bleeding disorder, not blood clotting. Vitamin K aids in the ability of blood to clot, which is why it is given to newborns as a preventative measure. A lactation consultant friend sent me a link to an article, which includes statistics, about this very debate. http://evidencebasedbirth.
Avatar f tn There are possible negative side effects and it's 20,000 times more then they need there are alternatives such as breastfeeding and oral versions of it. I'm doing the other shots and I will vaccinate my baby. But the vitamin K if you need to sign a consent to a shot I think it's a little questionable. I have an appointment tomorrow I'm going to talk with my doctor about my options. Because I want him to get his vitamin K I would just rather it through different means.
Avatar m tn Could the new Rx of Plavix I'm taking cause petechiae? Also I have had a sun burn but I'm exploding with petechiae everywhere even spots that were not sunburned? Is this serious, can it wait until tomorrow to seek medical advice?
237039 tn?1264258057 Coumadin works by decreasing the amount of vitamin K available for use in the body and therefore reduces the efficiency of blood clot formation. Plavix affects platelets that clump together to form clots and stop bleeding in the event of a cut/injury. Elevated homocysteine levels increases the risk of blood clots. Optimal homocysteine is 6.3umol/L. Good article on this: Nattokinase—The Natural Blood Thinner | Smart Publications. Excerpt...
Avatar m tn If you are taking the blood thinner coumadin I understand that vitamin K influences it's properties in some way, but I'm not taking it and don't have definitive information. I take Plavix and aspirin, but there are no warning that I know of about food with with either of those drugs. Ed's right, grapefruit should be avoided when taking blood pressure medications. I'd tell you to stay away from broccoli.
255163 tn?1376869746 My heart Dr will not let me go off the plavix and my surgeon will not do the surgery while on plavix. What happens in a situation like this?. I am between a rock and a hard place. If neither Dr gives in what do I do? If I have an attack and end up in the ER wouldn't they have to do emergency sugery?. Does this mean that anyone on plavix can never have surgery unless it's an ermergency. What is your opinion on going off plavix temporarily for surgery. I would welcome anyones advice.
535822 tn?1443976780 But, when someone decided to supplement them with magnesium, too, then their little bodies made use of the vitamin D and the children finally started to improve and they finally recovered from the Rickets. It was heart-breaking to read about how the parents were blamed for child abuse when it was really a case of malnourishment that the parents and even the doctors were unaware of. My neurologist wants me to concentrate on taking the magnesium supplements to help with the migraines.
Avatar f tn It has really not had any affect on me at all. The one thing that I know warfarin affects is Vitamin K. Vitamin K is what causes your blood to clot. Therefore the warfarin cancels out some of the Vit. K to make your blood thinner. I have to have my Protime (PT) checked every couple of months to make sure my blood is not too thin or thick. Really no big deal. BTW, it doesn't lower blood count, just the ability to clot.
