Plavix and stents

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and stents

plavix

Avatar f tn my mom had triple by pass surgery and only 2 of the bypass remained open soon afterwards They then put in 9 stents and 3 closed given repro and her platetet count has dropped .
Avatar m tn After a year there is no evidence to suggest plavix has any benefits as the stent is well embedded in the artery lining by then. However, this is related directly to benefits affecting stents, because both plavix and aspirin will continue to reduce clotting times in your blood as long as you take them. I am on plavix for life and not aspirin, because aspirin gave me too many gastric issues.
Avatar n tn I had angioplasty in 2001 and had a stent implant. My cardiologist prescribed Plavix and 81 mg aspirin daily among the other medications (beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, statin). I have recently moved to a new city and have not found a new cardiologist yet but family physician suggested that Plavix could be discontinued as the guidelines have changed and no long recommended after 12 months post stent implant. Suggestions please?
Avatar n tn After that length of time it is generally believed to discontinue plavix but remain on aspirin. Although plavix and aspirin are anti-platelet agents, plavix has a different mechanism of action that seems to be specialized for drug eluding stent to prevent restenosis. Laviquin is an antibiotic medication! and there is a class-action suit against Laviqiin providers that is currently unresolved.
1210142 tn?1266077031 Thank you very much for yout detailed posting- really appreciate it. I am quite familiar with all the side effects and everything you mentioned- have done some research too. Tried to stop Plavix and almost got another heart attack- I have 3 stents and the third one is in a "sandwich"- so to make this short, I may have to be on Plavix indefinite. The paradox is that after I started Pantoprazole, my chest pains disapeared 99%.
Avatar n tn You need the heart medication and Plavix and it would be risking to stop the Plavix. Lipitor is good for studies have shown that it has helped reduce cholesterol buildup in the arteries. The studies showed that 40mg was just as good as 80mg and that 80mg did not help reduce the cholesterol buildup any more than the 40mg. One question I have, is the nitro patch. Are you having chest pains? Nitro is not good for your liver.
Avatar m tn I have both DES and drug eluting stents and have had heart attacks, and took Plavix for several years. About a year ago I went off Plavix and have not experienced a heart attack or restinosis. I remain on 81mg aspirin. While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems.
Avatar n tn My husband has a pacemaker and 8 metal stents. He's been taking Coumadin and Plavix for the past 4-5 years since his last stent was put in. Recently he was rushed to the hospital with blood in his vomit and stools. They said he had last 60% of his blood and immediately preceeded to give him blood, total 9 pints. After much reading up on ulcers and his medicine's side-effects, we discovered that Plavix causes ulcers. He was bleeding from a huge ulcer in his stomach.
Avatar n tn My Orthopedic surgeon was very specific in me stopping both the aspirin and Plavix totally to prevent any kind of excessive bleeding...I trust him and his work as he has a great reputation, but I am troubled that this will be an ongoing problem with blockages throughout my lifetime...Being my other hip will need to be replaced in the future, I can see this same scenario being continued...What do you think..? Thanks...
255163 tn?1376869746 t really understand the doc not wanting to do the surgery. I had bypass surgery and got 2 stents installed while on Plavix with no problems at all. I think the risk is controlling the bleeding, but it must not really be that big a problem. Gall bladder removal is not the big deal it used to be. One lady I know had it done and just spent one night in the shop--almost like an outpatient surgery--and she was on Plavix. I think they had her not take it just for a day or two before the surgery.
Avatar m tn When you stopped your plavix and had a heart attack in 2 days, was it a clot in the stents or somewhere else?
Avatar n tn i feel your pain i have had 7 stents since 2006 and have taken plavix since the firsy stent in 2006 good thing its only a 20.
Avatar n tn On 3d catherization in 9 years, 2 stents placed end to end in LAD. Placed on 10mg Effient; after 5 weeks changed over to 75 mg Plavix (also take 30 mg Isosorbide monitrate along w/0.81 mg aspirin. For first 4+ weeks heaviness in chest w/periodic angina. Notice with excitement or now-a propensity to become angrier easier, have chest pains for awhile. I have always been very healthy and full of energy-that is, until this year.
Avatar m tn The usual protocol for the drug eluding stents is dual therapy of aspirin and plavix for a year. The reason for plavix is that DES has a tendency to clot when compared to bare metal stents, and less a problem for restenosis (overgrowth of tissue within the lumen). After a year medical consensus is to discontinue plavix as there is less risk for clots, but continue with aspirin for a lifetime. There may be some individuals that have a higher risk for clots so plavix may continued indefinitely.
Avatar f tn The risk is excessive bleeding, and the benefits don't outweigh risk after a year with aspirin and plavix regimen. Internal bledding can be deceptive and life threatening before there are any symptoms and require an emergency treatment. There is no medical published literature that supports excessive doses of an antiplatelet medication. I take 67mg aspirin and discontiued plavix a year after the stent implant 7 years ago.
Avatar f tn Is his doctor aware of the history of a bleeding ulcer that your post mentions? Has the ulcer completely healed? I certainly would make sure the doctor is aware of this. I know in my case, when taking the Plavix I couldn't drink. I love to drink wine and while on the Plavix one glass would go straight to my head. I felt drunk. And, yes,the bruising is terrible. I walk around with purple marks on my arms all the time.
Avatar m tn Apparently, OP experiences other problems believed to be associated with plavix and that should also be a consideration for him. I discontinued plavix after a year or so and my wallet is happy.
Avatar n tn I have three drug eluting stents in the LAD, two non-drug eluting stents and three drug eluting stents in my RCA. I stayed on Plavix for 1.5 years after the last stent, and been off Plavix for over a year with no restinosis. I do exercise daily, take Vytorin, 81mg aspirin, and follow a healthy heart diet very carefully. So far, no problems with restenosis, but believe me, I think about it every day.
Avatar f tn Several weeks ago, the cardiologist took me off of Coumadin and added two 81-mg, aspirin and recommended that I stay on the Plavix for the biopsy. The radiologist's office contacted the cardiologist and they agreed I could go off Plavix for seven days prior to the biopsy. At this point, I am more concerned about a blood clot in my stents than breast cancer. Is it safe for me to discontinue Plavix?
Avatar m tn No, you dont come off plavix withoht cardiology approval.. I repeat.. Very ckearly.. You do not come off plavix. We run into this issue all the time.. They can do the procedure with plavix present.. Weve had to call surgeons from other disciplines before and give them the business.. Because not taking plavix can kill you. Your liposuction wont mean squat if youre in the grave.
1532119 tn?1292314351 He went into a clinical study that put stents into these arteries (stents not yet approved for brain) anyhow, he is on both plavix and asprin. But like Tim said you should ask your Dr.
Avatar m tn After getting two stents I was put on plavix. I also have gerds and would like to know what medecine I cantake for it tht doesnt conflict with plavix.
Avatar m tn I had 2 stents put in about 5 months ago and started on Plavix.. Since that time, I have had problems with chest pain and stomach pain, along with a host of other pains. I had a second cath to look at my heart because of the chest pain and the heart was said to be fine. Having a hard time sleeping at night and anxiety is building because of the pain. Anyone else have these issues? Also, is there a blood test that can be given to see if the Plavix even works for my gene make-up?
Avatar n tn I had plavix and aspirin for a year after stent implant, and now only aspirin. Both meds are anti-platelet agents, and many doctors go with both medication as they have different menchanisms for anti-clotting. The plavix is prescribed as it considered to be more effective against the formation of clots that appear to be a problem with drug eluding stents up to about a year. After a year or so aspirin only (87mg), as there is a risk of excessive bleeding with both agents.
Avatar n tn When plavix is stopped, I don't think it causes an existing stent to block. There is no evidence to suggest there is any benefit for taking plavix for more than a year, and this is the protocol which still stands in the UK. I've had 10 stents and stopped plavix after a year each time, with no stents becoming blocked. There is also a suggestion that plavix does absolutely nothing for women.
Avatar m tn I had 2 stents (RCA & LAD) July, 2012 at CCF. Have been on Plavix for 13 months and find I need Hernia surgery now as I am having having many problems due to the Hernia. What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
