Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and dental procedures

plavix

Avatar n tn The American Dental Association has agreed with the American Heart Association and the AMA, that there are no dental procedures that require the patient to stop Plavix. I read this yesterday, and the article mentioned that much to their dismay, cardiologist were still hearing from their patients that some nutty dentists were still asking them to stop Plavix for a procedure.
Avatar m tn I watched an online surgery video recording where a patient had stents inserted. The cardiologists then took questions from an audience of doctors and the public. One question posed was "does plavix have to be stopped for dental surgery". The reply was "no, plavix has actually been shown not to produce uncontrollable bleeding and even a tooth extraction is very safe". This was a video from 2009, so I'm wondering if the general concensus has now altered.
Avatar m tn I have both DES and drug eluting stents and have had heart attacks, and took Plavix for several years. About a year ago I went off Plavix and have not experienced a heart attack or restinosis. I remain on 81mg aspirin. While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems.

Avatar m tn I typically take 2 grams of amoxicillin before all dental procedures (and some medical ones, too) due to Mitral Valve Prolapse with regurgition and a PFO in the heart. I am currently taking a round of amoxicillin for another problem (strep throat, 2 pills twice a day for 10 days.) These will be finished on this Friday. I postponed my regularly scheduled teeth cleaning/check-up, because it was only a few weeks away. I re-scheduled it for one month from the end of this amoxicillin treatment.
Avatar n tn Dental issues are much more common while pregnant, and almost all dental work is safe during pregnancy. Talk to your dentist. I garuntee they've worked with pregnant women before. It's best not to wait till it's an emergency.

318181 tn?1336443496 OK, so I haven't been to the dentist in a while. I know I should have, but after we moved, I never found a new dentist, and since we've been TTC since then (and been pregnant twice), I've been putting it off and concentrating on TTC instead. Well, a few months ago, I noticed that I might be developing a cavity in my back molar, so I made a mental note that it's probably a good idea to go see a dentist, but then I started seeing my new RE and just kinda forgot about it.
Avatar n tn I have to have dental work done. Deep cleaning and two fillings. My doctor said to go off medicine 3 to 5 days before procedure. Is this going to pose a risk?
Avatar m tn I put in a coated stent in 2005 and another stent was put in just 10 days ago. A dental problem has cropped up which needs taking out the current filling ( drilling ) and having the tooth repaired. Would it be safe to undergo this dental procedure given the last stent is only 10 days old. I'am concerned about the drilling and whether it would have an adverse affect on the latest stent. I take plavix. Would I have to stop taking it before the procedure.
Avatar m tn is it typical for doctor to prescribe 75 mg plavix and 325 mg aspirin? and then to add 800 mg ibuprofen 3/day for pain management?

Avatar n tn My father had an angiogram, and 2 angioplasty procedures with a total of 3 stent placements in the past 4 weeks. He had an allergic reaction to something following the last angioplasty----swelling of jaw, face, and generalized swelling and itching all over. That has resolved but starting suddenly 2 weeks after the last procedure, he has severe, generalized joint stiffness and pain. His right knee is swollen and very painful.
Avatar n tn Eruption of wisdom teeth or dental abscesses may also cause the symptoms. Please go for a dental OPG and consult a dental surgeon. You may be referred to a neurologist for specialist consultation. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
Avatar n tn I just received a drug eluting stent last month and having a hard time adjusting to all the meds. I was on Plavix and was told I would be on that for 1 year. I ended up being allergic to the Plavix and the dr. switched me to Ticlid. Which I will be on for 1 year, so they say. And aspirin too. Is it true that you can still have chest pains with this type of stent?
Avatar m tn EF= 65% -Consider cardiac catherization I was wondering if a stent is 100% necessary, or could my father just take Plavix or Aspirin without stenting? Also, being my father has a good exercise capacity and an EF of 65%, if he does receive stents- how long do you think he’ll be on medicine for?

503418 tn?1231098736 Since 1955, the AHA has made recommendations for prevention of infective endocarditis with antimicrobial prophylaxis before specific dental, gastrointestinal (GI), and genitourinary (GU) procedures in patients at risk for its development. However, many authorities and societies, as well as the conclusions of published studies, have questioned the efficacy of antimicrobial prophylaxis in most situations.
315318 tn?1353251800 The risk of restenosis due to a blood clot is minimum after about about a year, and the risk/benefit ratio favors discontinuing plavix and its probability to cause excessive bleeding. Did you have a test that indicates your are hypercoagulable (excessive blood clotting characteristics)? A PT-INR test that times the clotting time?
