Avatar n tn I have had two liver biopsies, two bone marrow biopsies and many scans and ultra sounds. Although my health history is rather extensive they have yet to pinpoint what is happening with my liver. They have suggested the scarring in my liver, shown by the biopsies may be caused by the lupus or may be caused by autoimmune hepatitis but nothing has been diagnosed as of yet. I wish your sister the best of luck in finding what is happening.
Avatar f tn Hi. Bone marrow biopsy involves getting a sample of the bone marrow using a large bore needle that is inserted into the hip bone. The needle is still small enough such that it will not have an effect on the structural integrity and strength of the hip bone, even if your mother has osteoporosis. The subsequent treatment will depend on what the bone marrow biopsy results will be. Not all conditions which present with anemia can be treated with blood products or Epogen.
Avatar f tn An edema is a buildup of fluid. A bone marrow edema — often referred to as bone marrow lesion — occurs when fluid builds up in the bone marrow. Bone marrow edema is typically a response to an injury such as a fracture or conditions such as osteoarthritis. Bone marrow edema usually resolves itself with rest and physical therapy. Osteitis pubis is a condition in which there’s inflammation where the right and left pubic bones meet at the lower front part of the pelvis.
Avatar m tn Hi Thanks for writing to the forum! Severe dehydration can cause a high cell count. Another possibility is myeloproliferative disorders of the bone marrow. Myeloproliferative disorders include: • Polycythemia vera -- occurs when the bone marrow produces too many blood cells, especially red blood cells • Essential thrombocytosis -- occurs when the body produces too many platelet cells, which help blood to clot. Clots can block blood vessels leading to heart attack or stroke.
475555 tn?1469304339 I assume they are referring to a bone marrow biopsy. A sample of your bone marrow is taken from a large bone, generally the pelvic bone. A needle is inserted into your bone and a sample of your marrow cells is retrieved. Then they go deeper and a core marrow sample is taken. I have never had one but I know several people who have and they say it's not comfortable but it's not unbearable either. I don't think any of them underwent general anesthesia for the procedure.

Bone marrow destruction occurs in aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is a condition in which the there is an abnormal decrease in the cells that make up blood (such as white blood cells) because the bone marrow is not working properly to make these cells.

Avatar n tn Platelets are made in the bone marrow, and is the organ that produces all types of blood cells. The condition can develop when the bone marrow stops regulating its production of platelets and other blood cells, often as a result of a mutation or other type of injury to the marrow. Conditions that can cause the bone marrow to produce too many platelets include infections, surgery, iron deficiency, and prior removal of the spleen.

And as DV stated, a bone marrow transplant involves significant risk at the best of times. The risk-to-benefit ratio on this in no way passes muster for those of us with RRMS.
