Plavix and aspirin combination

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and aspirin combination

plavix

Avatar m tn This is why both are important. So even on both plavix and aspirin, you are only protected against clots, it offers no extra benefits against scar tissue or plaque formation. When a stent is inserted, the plaque is pushed into the artery wall, damaging it further. A normal artery lining is smoother than glass under a microscope, but a stent is very rough in texture, offering a great area for platelets to become active and form a clot.
976897 tn?1379167602 I had one stent put in 6 yrs ago and my Cardio has me on 81mg aspirin and the plavix for life. I can only go off both for 10 days if I know I'm having any surgery, then I have to go back on both again. If I was in your situation, I would listen to your regular Doc and stay on both for life.
Avatar n tn I have read so often that you should not take Plavix and aspirin, but it seems to also be common to prescribe both plavix and aspirin in certain situations. I am worried and confused. Thanks.
Avatar n tn I had angioplasty in 2001 and had a stent implant. My cardiologist prescribed Plavix and 81 mg aspirin daily among the other medications (beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, statin). I have recently moved to a new city and have not found a new cardiologist yet but family physician suggested that Plavix could be discontinued as the guidelines have changed and no long recommended after 12 months post stent implant. Suggestions please?
482754 tn?1341791494 Has anyone been prescribed the new plavix alternative called Effient? If so can you tell me about any side effects? I had an Everluminous drug eluding stent placed in the right coronary artery in May of this year and was placed on plavix and aspirin therapy. I've had no problems since the placement except for a severe allergic skin reaction which the dermatologist thinks is from the plavix.
Avatar m tn The recommended treatment for DES implants is dual therapy of aspirin and plavix up to a year. Combining plavix and aspirin increases the risk of bleeding vs. aspirin alone in patients treated for more than a brief period of time. That is the regimen followed for my DES implant. f you are in this category a prior MI and unstable angina:" In the CAPRIE trial, clopidogrel (plavix) was equivalent to aspirin for patients with a recent (but not acute) MI.
Avatar n tn I take aspirin daily prior to CHF.. Plavix and aspirin for preventing stroke and other serious vascular events in high vascular risk patients. Up to one year after a stent implant, plavix and aspirin are the recommended protocol as statistics have shown a high risk for clot. The anticoagulant coumadin and the antiplatelet agent aspirin have been shown to have similar benefits after myocardial infarction.
Avatar f tn I have been given Plavix and aspirin from the onset and I am still on it. I have been experiencing muscle weakness and numbness/tingling to left side of body and I worry that it is another TIA but then consider that it could also be a side-effect of Lipitor. Is there a contraindication for taking all these drugs at the same time given my medical history? thanks for any info you can provide.
Avatar f tn They should be taking blood tests to make sure her clotting factor is as required. I assume she is on aspirin daily also? Aspirin is for life, but once plavix is eventually stopped, the clotting factor does increase. I have noticed no real problems on plavix. I think the only problem comes if you require further surgery. Stenting is fine with plavix, they gave me 600mg before my last angioplasty.
Avatar n tn My Orthopedic surgeon was very specific in me stopping both the aspirin and Plavix totally to prevent any kind of excessive bleeding...I trust him and his work as he has a great reputation, but I am troubled that this will be an ongoing problem with blockages throughout my lifetime...Being my other hip will need to be replaced in the future, I can see this same scenario being continued...What do you think..? Thanks...
Avatar f tn The clinically important adverse reactions observed in trials comparing Plavix plus aspirin to placebo plus aspirin and trials comparing Plavix alone to aspirin alone are discussed below. Bleeding CURE In CURE, Plavix use with aspirin was associated with an increase in major bleeding (primarily gastrointestinal and at puncture sites) compared to placebo with aspirin. The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (0.1%) and fatal bleeding (0.2%) were the same in both groups.
Avatar m tn is it typical for doctor to prescribe 75 mg plavix and 325 mg aspirin? and then to add 800 mg ibuprofen 3/day for pain management?
Avatar n tn After that length of time it is generally believed to discontinue plavix but remain on aspirin. Although plavix and aspirin are anti-platelet agents, plavix has a different mechanism of action that seems to be specialized for drug eluding stent to prevent restenosis. Laviquin is an antibiotic medication! and there is a class-action suit against Laviqiin providers that is currently unresolved.
1532119 tn?1292314351 should plavix be taken with aspirin, or delete the aspirin .
Avatar f tn Sometimes aspirin is used in place of the Plavix, and the patient will be on aspirin and warfarin. That type of combo regimen is used when the doctor doesn't think that one drug alone is enough to do the job, and one drug obviously wasn't enough in your case. It seems that your Plavix and warfarin regimen is working, so I'll join you in giving thanks for that.
Avatar n tn I think you need to show your Doctor, and certainly nobody here will tell you to stop taking any medication against your Doctors wishes. You could speak with your Doctor and ask if either Aspirin or Plavix can be stopped, but definitely one must be taken for life. Each time I've taken Plavix, I've been told to stop after 1 year to 18 months because there is no evidence to support benefits after that time.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar f tn Taking Plavix indicates you have drug eluding stents. The a drug-eluting stents (DES) basically have a special drug that delivers the agent right at the site of the injury to the artery and prevents much of the scar tissue from recurring. Compared to the alternative bare metal stent and it is known that the likelihood of the arteries re-narrowing after drug-eluting stents are much less than after bare metal stents.
Avatar m tn Did you stop it abruptly or over period of time? Did you have a heart attack and DES and were put on Plavix because of this and do you take 81 or 325 mg of Aspirin?
237039 tn?1264258057 I know that stroke and heart valve patients take Coumadin and heart patients are usually given Plavix and/or aspirin. As you have both issues, you pose a really good question.
Avatar f tn t take the Plavix for personal reasons, and I always forget my aspirin. I did some goggling and found this bit in an article. It suggests that Plavix is an alternative. Not sure if that is correct or not. "If you’ve already had a heart attack or stroke or are resistant to the beneficial effects of aspirin, your doctor may suggest supplementary aspirin therapy with another clot-preventing drug, such as clopidogrel (Plavix).
Avatar f tn The risk is excessive bleeding, and the benefits don't outweigh risk after a year with aspirin and plavix regimen. Internal bledding can be deceptive and life threatening before there are any symptoms and require an emergency treatment. There is no medical published literature that supports excessive doses of an antiplatelet medication. I take 67mg aspirin and discontiued plavix a year after the stent implant 7 years ago.
