Avatar n tn Prior the the potential exposure, I was prescribed a topical nail fungus medication (ClearNails Pro) that is fat soluble and claims to penetrate to the nail bed. This medication contains a drug called ciclopirox which was recently discovered to kill hiv infected cells in vitro. The percentage of ciclopirox is 6 percent. 1. Since my fungal medication is fat soluble and contains ciclopirox, will it enter the blood stream in enough concentration to affect the accuracy of an hiv antibody test?

Avatar f tn I have had a rash on my chin (see picture) for about 5 months now. It started out on the right side of my chin. It would come and go randomly without treatment. About a year ago I had some seborrheic dermatitis around my nose and the derm prescribed me Ertaczo (an anti-fungal). That cleared up the rash right away. I went to my primary physician and showed him the rash on my chin mentioning that it looked similar to the rash I originally had around my nose.

Avatar m tn Both topical and oral antifungals are effective agents in the treatment of Pityrosporum folliculitis. Other topicals that are used to treat Pityrosporum folliculitis are ciclopirox olamine cream, econazole cream, alcohol and salicylic acid solution. Retinoids are not very effective. I suggest you to consult a dermatologist and discuss these treatment options with him. I sincerely hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted on how you are doing. Warm regards.
Avatar m tn Hello, Antibiotics for gram negative bacterial infection are different and you need to get the sore cultures for bacterial or fungal infections and then specific treatment can be started. The scalp sores can be due to perifolliculitis scalp. It is characterised by small, very itchy pustules within the scalp, often most troublesome on the frontal hairline. The scalp should be washed with a mild normal shampoo as often as desired.
Avatar m tn Factors that can cause the fungus to become more visible include high humidity and immune or hormone abnormalities. Treatment involves topical and oral antifungal medicines. Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn I was okay trying to control(possibly) the fungus on my toes and my thumb and index fingernails. Now it needs like what my wife is having(black dot on her thumb) now resembles what I had once upon a time. I don't want her to fight with fungus. I did see a dermatolgist yesterday and she said my toes are likely fungus-related but she had I didn't have enough nail for samples. Prescribed me Penlac(sp?) and asked me to go back when the toenails grow out... I am so confused now.

Avatar n tn I tried lamisil cream for 4 weeks with only a slight improvement and then saw my GP. He prescribed ciclopirox which I used for 5 weeks with maybe 25-50% improvement, but it would occasionally flare and come back just as strong. Went back to the GP and he suggested maybe the fungus was almost gone and that it was more inflammation than anything. To be sure, he prescribed oral ketoconazole for 2 weeks and prescription hydrocortisone.
Avatar f tn Fungal nail infection is, as you rightly say, very difficult to clear and also has a nasty habit of recurring. The best treatment is an oral drug called Limisil taken every day for three months. I appreciate that you can't take this right now so your alternative is a medicated nail polish containing the anti-fungal drug ciclopirox. Applying this every day for three months should make a difference.

Avatar m tn This is less likely due to its acute presentation. However, chronic infections are known as well and respond to ante-bacterial treatment. This treatment can be started if culture of your rash scrapings is positive for this bacterial infection. Sometimes the cause cannot be identified despite several tests. Also, sometimes, if the rash does not subside, it is best to get your blood sugar tested.

Avatar m tn my first treatment was Doxycycline [3 months 100 mg every other day] it helped me instantly and cleared 100% my scalp. But right after I finished taking doxycycline problem came back in full force. Second treatment was low dose isotretinoin - 4 months on 10mg and 4 months on 20mg [8 months in total]. Isotretinoin cleared my scalp 100% just after one week. I was obviously very happy, because during 8 months of my thereapy I didn't had a single pimple on my scalp.
Avatar f tn The preferred conventional oral treatment is Sporanox pulse therapy daily for a week followed by a three week rest, repeated for three months. A clipped nail sample should be sent for culture before treatment. Expect a 60% to 70% cure rate. It’s unsafe for people with heart disease, may damage the liver, and interacts with other drugs. So your doctor has to watch carefully! Consider tea tree oil, a safe natural over the counter remedy. It’s a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent.
