26June2008 Roche announced today that the European Commission has approved a shortened, 16-week course of treatment with Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a (40 KD)) plus Copegus (ribavirin) for certain hepatitis C patients.

The results showed that Albuferon was as effective for hepatitis C as the current treatment on the market, a Roche drug called Pegasys, but in half as many doses. The test focused on patients who had two types of hepatitis C, both of which take 24 weeks to treat. Results of Albuferon's final trial, conducted on patients with a type of hepatitis C that takes 48 weeks to treat, are expected in March.

You need more then pegasys to treat Hepatitis C. Present treatment requirers 3 drugs. Interferon, Ribavirin, & Incivik or Victrelis. In order to get any of these drugs you will have to see a GI doctor, Hepatologist if possible. The doctor will run tests to find out what genotype you are, etc.

Pegasys is not used as a monotherapy in hep C patients. If he is taking it with ribavirin that would be for hepatitis C. People with pregnant partners should not use ribavirin during their partners pregnancy. Interferon alone is sometimes used for hairy cell leukemia, kidney cancer and melanoma. It is not used for liver damage as a monotherapy since it was proven that it does not help the liver recover from damage due to any reason.
