Paxil weight gain side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil weight gain side effects

paxil

Avatar f tn If your concern is only the weight change factor just keep an eye on your weight and if you start to notice you that your gaining or losing call your doctor. The weight is one of the less serious side effects. But do your research on the Paxil and the dosage. Or nothing may happen at all the side effects vary from person to person. You may not have any side effects.
Avatar m tn Some people complain about weight gain while on SSRIs like Paxil and others even complain about weight loss. What has been really helpful for me is ensuring that I watch what I eat and exercise regularly. Remember, quite often, or weight gain has more to do with our lifestyle than what we are taking sometimes in my experience. Do you exercise regularly and watch what you eat? Keep us posted!
Avatar m tn I also take Paxil for a sleep disorder (depression-related insomnia) and have for 11+ years. It works wonderously, but I gained 30+ lbs when I started the medication and have tried for years to lose it, unsuccessfully. I will lose some weight - and believe me, it takes an enormous amount of exercise and effort - but inevitably gain it back because Paxil makes my appetite so strong.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was started on nefazadone hydrochloride years ago, worked well but was withdrawn from the market, citalopram for about 12 years, weight gain and few other side effects. stopped working. Escitalopram gave me fast hearbeat as did trazadone, Setraline fast or slow and irreg heartbeat. Never considered effexor xr/venlafaxine as i was so put off with the reviews of weight gain and the awful discontinuation symptoms. Prozac was great but major weight gain in two months.
Avatar f tn I lost some of it. I went on Effexor and did not have any weight gain, and no side effects. That was the other reason I came off Paxil...too many side effects.
Avatar n tn Sabrina, yes paxil, like all the other ssri's can cause weight gain. The medication that doesn't is wellbutrin, or if anxiety is the main symptom, klonopin. You should adjust to tiredness within a week, if not, then maybe the dose is too high for you. Re obesity, you have to learn how to stop stress eating, which is probably more difficult for you because of your anxiety. the best way to do that is to take the course at www.shrinkyourself.com, or consult a therapist.
Avatar n tn I suggest you get a full list of them online, but primarily the side effects are related to weight gain, short term intestinal symptoms, an unusual mental feeling for a few days, and not much else...although, infrequently, many more.
1140114 tn?1260923267 The sexual side effects are fairly common. Much more common that the literature suggests. The weight gain is one I'd say is not rare, yet not extremely common either. The loss of emotion is a rarer side effect, but I've heard it numerous times. After taking it for several years, it may just be a time for a change. If weight gain is an issue, then stay clear of Remeron. It will literally make you chug sugar from the sugar bowl.
445725 tn?1206388767 Did you gain weight on Paxil? My dr. started me on it and I haven't taken it because I am SCARED TO DEATH it's gonna make me gain weight!!! That's part of the reason I am depressed is my weight!!!!!
Avatar f tn I have been ready more bad than good about the side effects; particularly the weight gain and the withdrawal symptoms. I will stop taking this medicine ASAP if I can a couple of lbs. Does anyone have any positive things to say about Paxil or any other anti-depressant. The doctor told me I may gain 1 lb in a yr. I have read that people that were NEVER overweight have gained 20+ lbs...
1473147 tn?1286917921 Hard to imagine any psychiatrist or doctor allowing you to gain 100 pounds without having said something about Paxil being notorious for weight gain. If you choose to go back on it, you might try consulting a book called the Anti-Depressant Survival Guide by Hedaya -- it suggests dietary changes to help with this kind of side effect. It's not a great diet, but it should give you some ideas. Good luck.
Avatar f tn I want to switch from paxil 20mg to something else that won't give me weight gain side effects. I always feel hungry and it's hard to not eat. Is there any other anxiety meds that will not cause weight gain? Iam 5'4 and 140lbs., previously 120 before the meds (about 9 monts ago) I have started working out again, but I still want to eat. Paxil has really helped my anxiety and panic attacks and would like something that would work as well without the weight gain, if that is possible!!
527657 tn?1214051850 I have been on Paxil for 6 years and have gained 40 lbs. I am young, healthy and very active. I do not have a sweet tooth - I do not eat desserts, despise chocolate and anything sweet. I never pig out on junk food. I exercise and run and chase around my 4 young sons. NOTHING has taken off my weight. I have joined Weight Watchers and tried Slim Fast, and the Atkins diet. All to no avail. I have dropped to eating only 1300 calories a day and still the weight stays the same on the scale.
527657 tn?1214051850 Paxil is not known to cause weight gain. In clinical trials, weight gain by people on Paxil was the same as for placebo, and therefore not deemed an adverse effect.
Avatar m tn I have been on Lexapro several times over the last 4 years for 6 months to 2 years at a time. I am having problems with the sexual side effects and the weight gain. It's actually less of a "weight gain" than a shift in body composition. My pants are too tight and my shirts are more fitted but I haven't actually gained a pound. I am a competitive runner and haven't changed my exercise or eating habits over the last 2 years.
382594 tn?1266610613 I have been on paxil several yrs. now and as far as side effects all I had was dry mouth and sexual probs.. since I am not with anyone at the time it doesnt matter at the moment LOL...As far as weight gain I gained but it was due to other meds than the paxil at this time because when I took it several yrs b4 my kids I didnt gain any weight..For me the paxil has been a lifesaver and its been on the market several yrs now..So, it can be trusted alot more than these new meds that are comming out..
527657 tn?1214051850 I have gained 40 pounds and im not going to gain another. I dont even have to eat anything to gain, just take the pill.
Avatar f tn Paxil is notorious for weight gain. Gained 50 pounds on it myself. Also known for side effects and difficulty quitting. Try the Prozac. Save the Paxils and Effexors for last.
Avatar m tn Weight gain is a common side-effect of SSRIs in general - paxil in particular. I have friends who lost weight on paxil with a strict diet and exercise program. But I also have friends on paxil who could not lose the weight no matter what they did. The weight will come off when you discontinue the medication - or switch to a medication that has less of a chance of causing weight gain (ie. Prozac). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood.
Avatar f tn Proper protocols call for weaning off a drug as slowly as you need before you start a new medication.
763297 tn?1281379425 I have done research about the side effects from taking Paxil but their website says weight gain is a possibility and mentions nothing about the loss of energy. I feel like I cannot accomplish anything because of all the sleep I require. Im 24 and I went from a size 1 to a size 7. I have decided against my doctor's wishes to stop taking this medication. I am wheaning myself off slowly because of the horrible withdrawl sysmptoms such as severe dizziness and nausea.
Avatar f tn m thinking of going back on something but am concerned about 1) weight gain/bloating and 2) pregnancy (newly married and want to start a family soon). Paxil made me gain weight and I know is a no no for pregnancy. Any recommendations? Stay off and just be somewhat unpleasant / unhappy? Any good drugs that don't have those side effects and aren't scary to come off of?
415867 tn?1323365503 These older types of antidepressants affect neurotransmitters, causing a broad range of side effects including significant weight gain. Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t.
Avatar n tn Yea, Paxil is a bad one for weight gain. Fair warning... If any doctor tries to put you on Remeron and weight is a concern for you then SAY NO WAY. I have been on both at differnt times in the past. You want to talk about weight gain? OMG! Remeron makes Paxil look like a diet pill! Taking Remeron is like wanting to be fat.
Avatar f tn with a heavy heart, and a heavier body, we decided to go back to the Paxil-- Because...besides the weight gain, how was my life? MUCH BETTER from at the very beginning. I should also mention that I took Clonazepam as needed during my adjustment periods of the new drugs...and I hardly took it, because I felt like it didn`t do anything. I guess my point is...that how the SSRI`s work is so individual, some work for some, and not for others at all. I have had great success with Paxil though...
Avatar m tn There are other medications where weight gain is less of a side effect. I've been on most of them and fortunately never experienced the weight gain. So you do have options there, but as for your libido returning I think they all have this side effect. I'm sure others will jump on with some helpful advice for you, so stay with us.
Avatar n tn Hi, I was on Paxil for a period of time and never gained any weight at all, but I also went to the gym 4 times a week and watched what I ate. Exercise also helped relieve my anixety/depression. If you can, try and get a little bit of exercise each day. As far as comming off of the Paxil, I did find it more difficult then when I came off of Prozac. In any case when (if) you decide to come off of the Paxil, don't quit cold turkey!
Avatar n tn My own advice would be to wean off Paxil before trying another antidepressant so you can tell which effects are withdrawal from Paxil and which are side effects of the new med. It's hard to do when you're essentially on two meds at once; even though Paxil leaves the body quickly, the brain takes a while to adapt to the cessation of these meds. But this is just my opinion.
