They're both in the same class of drugs, and pretty much treat the same symptoms. Paxil is a newer medication, and if the dosage isn't working you may need to have your doctor increase it. Prozac is an old drug and I think the newer ones come with fewer side effects. It's best to discuss this with your doctor since he is aware of what will best suit your needs.
I have been on Lexapro for a while, but due to some side effects I am switching. I am exhausted on Lexapro. I cannot get through the day without needing a nap. I can barley keep my eyes open through the day. This is unlike me. I also am having slight nausea. It's also not helping me as much as I'd like for anxiety, although it has been great for my depression. My doc wanted to switch me to Prozac.
Alternative..... Protriptilyne in Generic form. Low side effects, and no sexual side effects either. Also much more effective than Prozac.
I used to take Prozac and it didn't work near as well as Protriptilyne. And it's not made in China and it is cheap. A one months supply is only $60 and thats if you pay cash with no insurance.
It worked for me, maybe it will work for you also. It has a nice calm, yet energizing effect that I find very theraputic.
Said that it is not as addicting and will help me through the paxil withdrawl. ??? He said give it a month and then stop taking prozac and getting off prozac is much easier because it stays in your system longer. I am soo sick of taking pills. I went there for help and I left with more pills. Whatever..
t have the answer but it almost sounds as though you have answered your own question in that side-effects from prozac could be responsible.

I don't typically respond so much to the medication questions because medications can be complex and are best left to those with some knowledge or experience about them.

Prozac stays in the body much longer, making it easier to quit and generally has fewer side effects. Paxil is a very stong ssri that also strongly affects choline receptors, can be very hard to quit, and has a lot of side effects, but can be more effective for anxiety. I'd try the prozac first, in fact I'd try all the ssris first, before I'd do Paxil.
Has anyone else taking Fluoxetine (similar to Prozac) experienced side effects? I have noticed some odd changes in the way my body responds to exercise; specifically, excessive sweating. I'm not sure if the medication is directly linked, but in the past year (I have been taking the drug for about 2.5 years) I break into an all over the body sweat very easily, and it has happened even when I'm not exercising.
re most likely going through some withdrawal from the Paxil. You could also be having start up side effects from the Prozac. If we do get start up side effects it can be hard to say how long they'll last. I'm not sure what advice I can give you as far as what med to take. Maybe give the Prozac a little more time but if the side effects keep up or get worse then see your Dr.
Both of these are two of the most difficult meds out there, especially when you want to stop taking them. I'd go with ssris first since snris can be very stimulating, or tricyclics, or just try therapy and see if you can do it that way. I don't think either of these will give you tremors, that's usually the mood disorder drugs, but side effects are peculiar to the individual, they don't necessarily go along with the med. What's easy for one is hard for another.
Gained 50 pounds on Paxil myself, over a period of several years. Theory is they slow the metabolism, but not everyone has the same side effects. Weight gain is very common with Paxil, less common with Prozac and Lexapro, less common still with stimulating antidepressants, but they don't tend to do very well for anxiety sufferers.

I told him I wanted to lose 55 more pounds. He then switched me from paxil to prozac. He didn't tell me about the side affects of going off the pazil. He just told me to cut the paxil in half and take half a pill for a few days then begin the prozac overlapping a couple of days. Well...
If your concern is only the weight change factor just keep an eye on your weight and if you start to notice you that your gaining or losing call your doctor. The weight is one of the less serious side effects. But do your research on the Paxil and the dosage. Or nothing may happen at all the side effects vary from person to person. You may not have any side effects.
I have been on 20 mg paxil for panic attacks for 7 years, I've tried to wean from paxil(felt like had no energy on paxil) many times, unsuccessfully. I've recently switched to 20 mg prozac, without a taper. After about 5 weeks, I started to feel lousey-nausea, diarrhea, no appetite, depressed. Still feeling lousey. Would it likely be better to increase prozac, or switch back to paxil. If switching back to paxil, what are the best ways to do this.

Unfortunately, all meds can have side-effects and prozac was prescribe to you because it's common for doctors to choose this medication.If you feel like this medication is affecting your functionality and you wish to change meds, all you need to do is speak with your doctor and tell him your concerns.
I would also suggest that you don't rely on the medication alone.
5mg of Paxil to 20mg of Prozac and it was really like there were no side effects with this change-over. I had a day or 2 of dizziness, but I got the flu 2 days after the switch, so... who knows, could have been flu dizzy or Paxil/Prozac dizzy... but it's gone now. Could it have been that easy a switch over for me?
ve only been on it for a month and no weight gain except the 5 lbs that I had lost from the terrible withdrawl side effects of the Paxil. My Doctor only plans to keep me on it until my body gets use to the Prozac....and I agree I'm ok on the Remeron, but don't feel as though it is helping me that much.
It could be that your having headaches this 2nd time around b/c of the Paxil. The first time I was on Paxil I had no side effects but that was at age 24. I'm 29 now and I feel the side effects definately this time around.

I already take a HIGH dose of Klonopin daily (8 mg), who is not effective anymore and we add 1 mg of Xanax, who work for3 weeks and stop working... so I don't see how my PDoc would be able to add more benzo meds to calm the initial anxiety when I will start the SSRI...
For the SSRI, i'm used to all of them... They was like candy for me in the past, no side-effects like increase anxiety but MAJOR weight gain...
people with anxiety have a tendency of psyching themselves up about things, especially medication and potential side effects. You might be suffering from the placebo effect. I know that just a day after taking celexa for the first time, I started feeling really strange. But the fact is, the medication couldn't possibly have infiltrated my system enough in only 24 hours to induce symptoms or side effects. It was my mind playing tricks on me.
