Common Questions and Answers about Paxil side effects in the elderly

paxil

Avatar m tn Hi, I was on Zoloft 100mg for 14 years and it worked good.New doctor changes me to Paxil without a taper. Six weeks into the change I became very ill. I ended up with some vison loss and neurological and brain damage. I am very self eduacated on these two drugs as I have done nothing but research them for the past two years. No they are not suposed to be taken togehter and infact ther is a contridiction that they are not to be taken together.
10361664 tn?1409609407 thats why my anxiety got bad...so he wants to up the paxil and take me off the zoloft cause of the side effects. I cant even work im sleeping til 2 in the afternoon and stomach is so upset! Thank you for your input I really appreciate it!
Avatar n tn Take it real solw and ask your doctor about taking Remeron to help take the edge of off the Paxil side effects. Did a great job for me! Lets you get to sleep at night and really helps with the anixety. However, it did keep me in a fog for a few days until my body adjusted.
2044839 tn?1331255841 I felt like a zombie and almost felt my anxiety comin back once i started thinking more about how the medicine made me feel. I have pressure in the back of my head as well as cold flashes in the am and hot flashes in the pm. Ive never been on anti deprssents before this. I had to take a xanax today to calm me down and i still feel so drained. Is this normal? I dont think i can handle this medicine. Any adivce???
1286779 tn?1400012806 I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.
Avatar f tn After seeing my doctor lately, she has decided to take me off my Cymbalta. I've been on it for 3 years with no change in my depression. What I'm wondering about are the withdrawals that I think I've been experiencing. The doctor also has put me on Paxil while weaning me off the Cymbalta. The symptoms I've had are mostly being very shaky; so much so that it's hard to hold a spoon because I'm shaking that badly. Is this normal and will it go away?
Avatar f tn I was recently on paxil for anxiety until I realized all of the side effects that I was getting including gaining weight. I talked to my doctor and he said I could wean myself off. I was taking 20 mg. He said 10 mg for 2 weeks and then 5mg for 2 weeks, after start wellbutrin. However, I didn't make it that far. Just by one week of going Down to 10 mg I was vomiting, running to the bathroom. Nervousness, dizzy, brain zap and a fuzzy feeling in my head, sweating, VERY emotional.
983155 tn?1248700406 re in Paxil withdrawal and, because you started another drug at the same time that has a completely different mechanism of action, you have the side effects of starting another drug that may not even be an appropriate substitute for Paxil. What you should do is, if you just started the wellbutrin, stop it, go back on the Paxil, and taper off slowly, as slowly as it takes because you aren't anyone else. What you have are classic Paxil withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar n tn Tremors throughout the body (very noticeable in the hands), jaw pain (teeth clenching), constant LOUD ringing in ears are the major issues. I won't even begin to mention the many minor issues. PLEASE HELP!!! Raiders77 Male, 44 years old, with no phycological issues (UNTIL NOW!!!).
Avatar m tn Okay. You've made it complicated. You must take the dose at the same time every day. All ssris other than Prozac do leave the body fairly quickly, though not that quickly, but there are people who suffer withdrawals when they miss a dose. By not taking your dose at the same time you are essentially missing doses. But the problem is, everything you're reporting is a possible side effect of taking antidepressants.
Avatar n tn My daughter is currently taking a combination of depakote, lamictal, and abilify for a mood disorder. However, her doctor feels the overwhelming problem with her is an anxiety disorder that is not being addressed by the current meds. The doctor wants to ween her off the lamictal completely and start her on klonopin wafers. I am concerned about the "drowsiness" side effects. Do these eventually go away?
Avatar m tn I also take Paxil for a sleep disorder (depression-related insomnia) and have for 11+ years. It works wonderously, but I gained 30+ lbs when I started the medication and have tried for years to lose it, unsuccessfully. I will lose some weight - and believe me, it takes an enormous amount of exercise and effort - but inevitably gain it back because Paxil makes my appetite so strong.
Avatar n tn I was told to take 10mg of Paxil for the first 4 days and then go to 20mg on the 5th day. For the first 4 days on the 10mg, I had some side effects such as only being able to sleep max 4 hours, feeling nauseous and bad headaches. I moved to the 20mg, and that was something out of this world! Was a very bad experience. I didn't manage to sleep all night, I vomited in the morning, terrible headaches, felt totally wired or something (or as I can imagine).
Avatar n tn My experience is, the more a medication works, the more side effects you get. Paxil is loaded with them, but then so are all of these crazy pharmaceuticals. Since everyone is different, though, no one can predict which side effects you'll get, and you might not even notice some of them until much later, such as changes in personality. And they change over time. And they're not side effects, that's psych speak, they're just effects.
944223 tn?1245869858 t taper of SSRIs like Paxil there can be unwanted side effects to include what you are describing in my opinion. That is why it is essential not to quit these medications cold turkey. For me, tapering slowly minimized these side effects and they will go away...keep us posted!
Avatar n tn m writing this because I was searching information of the medicine for withdrawal. I ran out of the med for 2 days for the first time in a year and I thought I was going to die. I had nausea, headache, palpitations, I couldn't drive my head was spinning. Ugly feeling I changed my mood very drastically and started to yell at my 10 year/old. My husband had to come back from work and go to the pharmacy and pick up the med. I took it and withing 2 hrs I'm fine again.
Avatar f tn It's funny that you say that because I never went on medication for my anxiety until February of this year and I have been on Celexa now for about 9 weeks and all my hands do is shake. So I assume it is the medication that does it to you... that's the risk of the side effects.
Avatar n tn you must not stop taking it abruptly. You have to be tapered off the Paxil to minimize the side effects of d/cing the med. If you decide at some point that you want to stop...contact your doc before doing anything. Side effects will vary again....from person to person. You may not have any. The more common side effects of a med like Paxil is an initial increase in anxiety, some feelings of "jitters", fatigue, drowsiness. Again...you may not have any of these...
Avatar f tn This 10 mg of paxil is kicking my butt...side effects of headaches, more anxiety, tight chest pains, dizziness, visual problems,diahreea,nausea....I know everyone says it takes 1 to 2 weeks to get in your system but I am staying so sick...I have only been on it for 6 days and I have already lost 5 pounds and my anxiety is worse now than before....I am still on klonipin and have been for 5 years but it doesnt even seem to be helping....
Avatar f tn Hi, I was started on nefazadone hydrochloride years ago, worked well but was withdrawn from the market, citalopram for about 12 years, weight gain and few other side effects. stopped working. Escitalopram gave me fast hearbeat as did trazadone, Setraline fast or slow and irreg heartbeat. Never considered effexor xr/venlafaxine as i was so put off with the reviews of weight gain and the awful discontinuation symptoms. Prozac was great but major weight gain in two months.
Avatar f tn People, you have to remember that SSIRI s and SNRI s really do not work for most of the population, the side effects are too great!
Avatar f tn tummy problems hot flashes like thryoid condition been tested dont have thryoid my reg dr said he going to give me anther depression pill bec paxil cause side effects again this is the 9th depression ive tryed
Avatar n tn I'm curious if anyone has any new information. I too have excessive sweating and do take cymbalta. However, the sweatng didn't start until I stopped cymbalta for a month, and because the side effects of withdrawal were so horrible, I went back on cymbalta. It's been four months I've been back on it and still have the sweats.
Avatar m tn They are often prescribed together. There is some question whether Buspar works at all, but some believe it does help Paxil work better. As for withdrawal being "easily" remedied, I wonder if that poster has ever been on Paxil or any other ssri? Easy isn't really the description many would use. And I don't think that difference in dosage will affect your withdrawal.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am too experiences horrific effects from coming off 20mg Lexapro. But I can't take all the side effects anymore. I wish I knew what to do to stop the vertigo/dizziness but the only thing I can find on internet (but havent' tried yet) is a motion sickness tablet that contains a vestibular suppressant. Only thing I wanted to mention is that a friend/nutritionist has suggested I take SamE as an alternative to the Lexapro.
Avatar m tn Drug Interaction Checker Klonopin is in a class of drugs called Benzodiapezines. Benzodiapezines are contraindicated when suffering from depression, however, anxiety999, you would have to discuss it perhaps with the prescribing doctor. The elderly metabolise benzodiazepines more slowly than younger individuals and are also more sensitive to the effects of benzodiazepines, even at similar blood plasma levels.
Avatar m tn The ssris with the best reputation for the least side effects are Lexapro and Prozac. Paxil and the snri Effexor are the very worst by reputation, so why start there? Just my opinion, again. The above is correct -- it takes 4-6 weeks to notice if it's going to work, but side effect begin immediately. Bummer that, but it is the way it is.
