Common Questions and Answers about Paxil and exercise

paxil

527657 tn?1214051850 Hi, I'm a nutritionist. I am also on Paxil. I gained about 45 pounds on it. And personally, I would rather be fat than depressed. Think about it, if you and your significant other were the only two people on the earth, would you rather be on the paxil, free of depression, and have a little weight gain, or would you rather be thin and depressed?
527657 tn?1214051850 Its a double edged sword...either be heavy and panic attack free or stay on Paxil and have image problems when you go up a dress size! I feel your pain honey! I'm hoping that I can get my weight back under control within a few weeks, but I'm not sure I will remain medication free forever. I've worked through a lot of my issues in therepy, so I am hopeful my panic attacks will remain far away, but if they come back, Paxil will be the last med I will go back on.
Avatar n tn i have had major anxiety for 4 yrs now to the point were i cant be elft alone again, and it is or i am letting it control my life i c drs i have just been switched or in the process of switching from paxil cr 50 mg daily to prozac and i take clonazepam. i c many take xanax. i have heard bad things about that. but i am wondering if prozac is a good med for really bad axiety and fears of dieing..everyday.
Avatar m tn I am starting up Paxil for a second time (first time was in 2003) and I recall having trouble with staying asleep the first time around when first starting up. It certainly is the problem now. I have just finished the second week on 10mg and I can fall asleep easily with 5mg or 10mg Ambien, but I now wake with a start in just a few hours, then I can't get back to sleep for the night. Very frustrating and exhausting. Is this the norm? How long will it last??
Avatar n tn I've been taking paxil for 10 years and I have not gained weight but I do moderate exercise every morning to help me feel relaxed physically in addition to mentally. Im nervous to stop taking paxil so the comments here have helped me know what to expect. I'm kinda thinking if I'm nervous about it then.. ha ha I probably shouldn't go off of it. I'm still building my tool box of skills to keep anxiety at a minimum.
Avatar f tn Is this your only problem? Paxil is the hardest antidepressant to stop taking, and you quit abruptly instead of tapering off slowly. But if lack of sleep is your only problem you actually did pretty well. I don't know that I can help you with the sleep, I've never found a solution to it. You're having a long-term withdrawal problem.
Avatar m tn Paxil is notorious for weight gain. I gained 50 pounds on it and couldn't lose it. But this could happen with other medications as well, so you have to balance the benefits and costs. Other meds might not work, and you'll have to go through getting off Paxil after such a long period of use. Prozac is said to not have the weight gain problem, but if your problem is anxiety, Prozac probably won't be as good. No way of knowing, but that's generally true.
1504101 tn?1299155264 Anyone else feel like their immune system takes a hit when starting an exercise program or continuing one? I feel like I get the flu after exercising, not just the common muscle aches. I've been landscaping my yard these past few days and, after bathing I literally get chills, but I don't have a fever. I'm seeing my endo today and will mention this weird symptom, because I had it before diagnosed with hypothyroid and my TT.
527657 tn?1214051850 I read up about both but am wondering if weight gain is a problem with zoloft. As for paxil i gained over 25 pounds and now Im trying to lose it and it sure isnt easy. I found out you don't take zoloft at night but paxil you do. I have got to lose this weight.
527657 tn?1214051850 I have been on Paxil for 6 years and have gained 40 lbs. I am young, healthy and very active. I do not have a sweet tooth - I do not eat desserts, despise chocolate and anything sweet. I never pig out on junk food. I exercise and run and chase around my 4 young sons. NOTHING has taken off my weight. I have joined Weight Watchers and tried Slim Fast, and the Atkins diet. All to no avail. I have dropped to eating only 1300 calories a day and still the weight stays the same on the scale.
1396756 tn?1283523477 I recently started taking paxil in hopes to reduce my depression and stress(witch cause me 2 eat) Im so disgusted by my weight> I even cried in fronta the DR! Does any1 kno if the med will help my depression and in turn help my eating? Also the Paxil totally keeps my appetite at bay.Im not hungry at all!
Avatar f tn Hi and thank you for responding. I have started on half a tablet for the last 4 days - i think that is 10mg. Today i have spells of feeling like I wanted to curl up and be looked after. I half heartedly asked my husband to book me into a fancy psych ward where i could sleep, read and get looked after. I think that is what is so draining (and wonderful) about kids - they are relentlessly there. I have moments in the day when i am spazzing out that i just want to run away.
Avatar m tn I have friends who lost weight on paxil with a strict diet and exercise program. But I also have friends on paxil who could not lose the weight no matter what they did. The weight will come off when you discontinue the medication - or switch to a medication that has less of a chance of causing weight gain (ie. Prozac). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood.
Avatar n tn Try taking some fish oil and adaptogenic herbs like ashwandha to help with the Paxil withdrawal, exercise, keep active. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Hi there. It is my understanding that if you look at the package insert of sertraline/zoloft that the average dose is often quite a bit higher than the starting dose. It takes a higher mg. amount to get an effect for lots of people. So, bumping it is trying to get it to therapeutic levels for you. Many antidepressants may peter out with time as it sounds like that is what happened with your paxil and may eventually happen with zoloft.
Avatar f tn going okay except for shoulder and hip joints aches. Is this pain something I can attribute to the paxil withdrawal?
Avatar m tn - my problem I was diagnosed with depression and panic attacks in 2000- started on paxil with good effect. Stopped 2 times but had to go back on paxil months later due to panic attacks returning along with depression. In 2005 I shifted to Efexor XR, 150 mg and realized I would be on these the rest of my life. This is ok because they work perfectly for me and have done so for the last 8 years.
Avatar f tn I've been thinking that I need to be on an anti-depressant. Am currently on Klonopin for general anxiety but feel down a lot and feel I am depressed. Soooooo, I need to decide if I want to go on an anti-depressant but there are so many to choose from. My sister is on a low dose of Lexapro and is doing well with it. My doctor recommended Paxil a while back but we decided I should go on Klonopin instead. And I've read that Paxil causes weight gain.
Avatar n tn SSRIs imo do have a rep for weight gain, although they can vary from each person. I took Paxil and gained weight. And to this day I won't take any more SSRIs. I tried other SSRIs as well just to be sure and not be biased. I been reliant on Klonopin for years now. No more issues with Weight Gain.
Avatar n tn I have notice that since I started taking Paxil I have gained 50 pounds and even with change in eating habits and exercise it is difficult to lose the weight. I have tried to get off Paxil only to suffer from withdrawals which are nasty. Nause, dizziness, vomiting, cold chills, shaking. Now, even when I forget to take it 1 day I experience these symptoms. Is there anything that I can take instead of this medication to help me with the OCD and how do I ease the withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar f tn Hey, I have been on effexor for like a year now and i have gained 10 kgs without any overeating or unhealthy eating habits and now, slowly my medications have been tappered and my question is, will the weight get back to normal once the medication is stopped?
527657 tn?1214051850 I suggest u read the comments on this forum and also got paxilprogress.com. Paxil DOES cause weight gain. Try it and see for yourself.
Avatar f tn Gained 50 pounds on Paxil, but it worked sorta. Didn't gain on Lexapro until they recently increased it to 30mg because it isn't working. My theory is, the better a drug works, the worse the side effects -- it means you're metabolizing it well. But everyone is different, some people complain about weight loss on these drugs. They're weird.
Avatar f tn Has anyone found a successful way to lose weight while on Paxil? I've been on it for over 10 years and can't lose weight despite diet & exercise. I never had a weight problem before starting Paxil but I've been hesitant to go off of it because it works so well despite this unfortunately side effect. Should I switch medications? Is anything as effective for depression and anxiety as Paxil?
Avatar f tn I'm in the process of withdrawing mself from paxil. I'm a strong willed person and have decided to go it cold turkey. Wondering if this is a smart idea but i'm committed to it. Believe me i didnt feel this weird before i started taking paxil and that was 10 years ago. I guess i'm in it for the long haul. Was wondering if anyone knew how long this weirdness was going to last or when it might let up a bit.
Avatar m tn My mom is 85 and has been taking zoloft and paxil for depression and anxiety attacks. I have noticed recently that she doesn't smile as often and her conversations are limited. Does anyone have any comments on the side effects of taking these two drugs together? I was wondering if she is being over medicated.
Avatar m tn Hello!!! Your exactly like me (well kind of) I worry all day, have chest and back pains all day, it's horrendous! Even when I'm going to sleep and I feel myself going off I feel like my hearts skipped a beat! I'm scared to exercise incase I keel over, I've had countless ECG's and tests and I'm fit and healthy, but cannot help but wonder if they've missed something...
Avatar f tn After recovering from breast cancer, I was prescribed a series of medications to treat depression and anxiety. I was put on Zoloft at first and then switched a few years ago to 40mg of Paxil along with 25mg of Xanax daily. I still feel anxiety and depression, however, and am afraid these drugs no longer work or that I have become immune to their effects. Should I be expecting the dosages of these medications to change over time? Is it normal to prescribe these drugs together?
