I've been on and off antidepressants for many years and have noticed after long term use I gain weight and no matter what I do I cannot shift it. I tapered off effexor a couple of years ago and despite some weight loss the withdrawal was awful so I went onto prozac. After a year or so on prozac I again have gained weight and despite 1 hour of hard cardio exercise a day I cannot shift the weight. I tapered from 20mg (lowest dose) and stopped completely a week ago.

But one study suggested that there might be differences in weight gain due to the different types of SSRI. Paroxetine (Paxil) may be more likely cause a significant weight gain than other drugs of this type (like fluoxetine or sertraline). Studies about citalopram found no significant weight changes for most patients (but a minority of about 5% of the patients had a weight gain of more than 5 kg).
I don't want to quit taking the Paxil as I know some side effects will go away with time but the weight loss, loss of appetite and nausea are starting to concern me. I don't have insurance and dont want to go back to the doctor if these are normal side effects that will subside. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain. Here are some possibilities: • Overeating, as a result of depression, can cause weight gain, esp if the person had lost weight in the pretreated depression • Most anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are also anti-histamines.
After prolonged stress & depression based on imagining my mother's death. I've nearly lost her 3 times, twice w/cancer & now progressive Alzheimers. Subsequently I've been diagnosed with GAD. Ive also read that tofranil can cause weight gain . Is this always inevitable or is it just in some cases ? If so , what can I do to avoid gaining weight ? This would be a real problem for me and would only make me more depressed . Ive always taken pride in keeping fit and slim and I d hate to lose this .
I was switched to Lamictal, I am doing just fine on it and it is considered weight neutral (no gain or loss) which requires no lab work. Talk with your Pdoc about it. Tell him about your future plans as a trainer and your concerns about the weight issue. Oh you were right to not take that anti depressant alone. Good job. It's good to trust our guts. Best Wishes and Good Luck.

Your results are definitive and your concerns about a possible weakened immune system in no way change this. Believe the test results. Finally, with respect to your weight loss, there is no reason to attribute this to HIV - your anxiety/OCD could contribute, so could any number of other medical problems., In contrast, in the first few years after infection, HIV is NOT associated with weight loss. You should not worry that your weight loss is a reflection of HIV.
About 4 years ago I started getting symptoms of anxiety and loss of sleep. I had regrets about the past and a career choice I made and I kept regretting and thinking I made a wrong decision. This affected my self esteem and I had problems taking up jobs. I couldn't control my thoughts and couldn't concentrate and I was tired when I got up in the mornings. I saw a psychiatrist who put me on fluoxetine and paroxetine.

The researchers concluded that the antidepressants were not any better than placebo for mildly depressed patients.

Paxil pulled him out of it initially, and he now has a normal life and is an advocate for Paxil (unpaid I think). •Depression drug Paxil was marketed to be used for children, in unapproved ways •Depression drug Wellbutrin was marketed to be used for weight loss treatment •Nausea drug Zofran was marketed to be used for pregnancy-related nausea Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Jim Dube said not only did the company engage in "off-label" promotion targeting women and children, they also engaged in kickbacks to healthcare professionals.
I think if you read the pi on paxil it has equal weight gain to weight loss making it weight neutral. My friend takes it and it never effected her weight at all. So I wouldn't let that scare you as that is patient dependent. However, you tried it in the past and had agitation/ hyperactivity from it. (you'd probably lose weight over the longhaul with that . . .) So you may want to consider lexapro or celexa.
for example paroxetine causes sedation and weight gain, and prozac causes activation and a bit of weight loss. Citalopram is weight and sleep neutral in most people. All SSRIs and SNRIs have sexual side effects, EXCEPT perhaps Pristiq, a new SNRI that has very low incidence of sexual side effects in the one or two trials that have been done with the medication.
