Weight and Vital Sign Changes Significant weight loss may be an undesirable result of treatment with paroxetine hydrochloride for some patients but, on average, patients in controlled trials had minimal (about 1 pound) weight loss versus smaller changes on placebo and active control. No significant changes in vital signs (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse and temperature) were observed in patients treated with paroxetine hydrochloride in controlled clinical trials.
It doesn't cause weight gain and has even been shown to create a bit of weight loss. Plus, it curbs cravings for food tremendously. I was a big nighttime eater and I've pretty much kicked the habit. Good luck with everything!
A medication that also works with the brain chemical dopamine is bupropion. Bupropion is unlikely to cause weight gain, and in fact, may cause some weight loss. It is also used to help people quit smoking.
As I said before, it didn't increase my urge to eat a bit, and I still gained over 50 pounds on it. Weight gain, weight loss, just weird stuff. But I've been on a lot of Paxil sites, and most everyone gained a lot of weight on it. Personally, can't live without my exercise, not that it's done anything to help my anxiety. It's just the way I've always been.
Prozac is well-known to cause a little weight loss in during the first six months. Beware of this! Weight-gain after the first six months is well established too. I experienced exactly this. Another effect is that it takes a very long time to clear Prozac from the body - off the SSRIs it and its metabolite, norfluoxetine have the longest half-life. So the can be a similar delay in being able to shift the weight after stopping prozac.

I don't want to quit taking the Paxil as I know some side effects will go away with time but the weight loss, loss of appetite and nausea are starting to concern me. I don't have insurance and dont want to go back to the doctor if these are normal side effects that will subside. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
But one study suggested that there might be differences in weight gain due to the different types of SSRI. Paroxetine (Paxil) may be more likely cause a significant weight gain than other drugs of this type (like fluoxetine or sertraline). Studies about citalopram found no significant weight changes for most patients (but a minority of about 5% of the patients had a weight gain of more than 5 kg).
As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain. Here are some possibilities: • Overeating, as a result of depression, can cause weight gain, esp if the person had lost weight in the pretreated depression • Most anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are also anti-histamines.
After prolonged stress & depression based on imagining my mother's death. I've nearly lost her 3 times, twice w/cancer & now progressive Alzheimers. Subsequently I've been diagnosed with GAD. I was given Effexor0.75mg. I began feeling great, stopped feeling constantly anxious, depressed, stressed & did not have anymore acute feelings of sadness nor joy. Just been feeling cool & stable.
Fluoxetine has not that problem cos its half-life is 4-16 days though abrupt withdrawal of any kind of these drugs is not convenient.Using fluoxetine can make weight loss but it is very relative. It is important to know the side-effect of the drugs but you must think they are not to come to you.To defeat depression we must take into account that we are persons with a mood disorder,we are not 'depressed people' so we must fight hardly to improve our self-value and our life's quality.
I was switched to Lamictal, I am doing just fine on it and it is considered weight neutral (no gain or loss) which requires no lab work. Talk with your Pdoc about it. Tell him about your future plans as a trainer and your concerns about the weight issue. Oh you were right to not take that anti depressant alone. Good job. It's good to trust our guts. Best Wishes and Good Luck.

Zoloft was origially marketed as a weight loss drug. I lost weight on both because they made me nervous and upset my STOMACH. SSRI's are like statins in that everyone cannot take them...........Unless you are suicidal, I'd have my DR. titrate me off all SSRIs, then go have my thyroid checked. just a thought.

About 4 years ago I started getting symptoms of anxiety and loss of sleep. I had regrets about the past and a career choice I made and I kept regretting and thinking I made a wrong decision. This affected my self esteem and I had problems taking up jobs. I couldn't control my thoughts and couldn't concentrate and I was tired when I got up in the mornings. I saw a psychiatrist who put me on fluoxetine and paroxetine.

ct=1 Both published and unpublished data on fluoxetine (Prozac), venlafaxine (Effexor), nefazodone (Serzone), and paroxetine (Paxil) were combined in a technique called meta-analysis, which brings together the data from many different research studies to see if they agree. The researchers concluded that the antidepressants were not any better than placebo for mildly depressed patients.
to use his words, and divorced him, he suffered extreme weight loss, crying for long periods -- anxiety syndrome symptoms. Paxil pulled him out of it initially, and he now has a normal life and is an advocate for Paxil (unpaid I think). •Depression drug Paxil was marketed to be used for children, in unapproved ways •Depression drug Wellbutrin was marketed to be used for weight loss treatment •Nausea drug Zofran was marketed to be used for pregnancy-related nausea Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Jim Dube said not only did the company engage in "off-label" promotion targeting women and children, they also engaged in kickbacks to healthcare professionals.
I think if you read the pi on paxil it has equal weight gain to weight loss making it weight neutral. My friend takes it and it never effected her weight at all. So I wouldn't let that scare you as that is patient dependent. However, you tried it in the past and had agitation/ hyperactivity from it. (you'd probably lose weight over the longhaul with that . . .) So you may want to consider lexapro or celexa.
