Hello Everyone,
My Wiz had a dental/extraction and ultrasound today. The us showed significant kidney changes… as well as an enlarged or hardened pancreatic node I think. We are putting him on a bp med and maybe some chinese herbs eventually. One of his kidney values was very mildly elevated so I wanted to do the ultrasound and he has had vomiting on and off… it seemed to be hairball related, I treated that and it seems to help and sometimes food related.

Switch your cat to a hypo-alergenic, human grade food like By Nature's Organic (no wheat, no soy, no corn, no grains of any kind, avoid high sugar content if possible). Make sure you feed wet food (6 oz per day per 10 pounds of body weight is about right) as well as dry food and lots of water. Give him yucca supplement, which is a natural anti-inflammatory.
An acute pancreatitis in my experience does not normally cause ascites. FIP is a possibility but I would be more interested in looking at causes of a low serum protein. Low protein causes a buildup of fluid in the abdomen and is often associated with a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Protein could be lost via the intestine (protein losing enteropathy) or in the urine (protein losing nephropathy).
He could very well be very allergic to something in the food and it is causing him pancreatitis and inflammation of the intestine. Not a good place to be. He really needs to see the doc, K?

Our Miss Teia was not eating for a few days towards the end of October, vet needed to give her an enema to clear her stoppage, was a huge hairball.
Her appetite has returned to normal as has her poop frequency.

.then I got chicken breast I traveled extensively its a problem for me to be here for my cats ... my cat sitter can only be relied upon so much so I have to make this as easy as possible..
I am worried...my cat has not eaten in two days and his stomach appears hard and distended. He is also moving around rather slowly.
I think she sounds like it is pancreatitis or Irritable Bowel. Fairly common in cats. My cat is also on Hills Z/D food only.
I know some do not favor this food but it works for my cat along with the Busesonide....so I am a believer.
Sometimes feeding your cat some boiled rice for a few meals will help with the loose stools--you can cook it in chicken broth.

He is a very sensitive, nervous cat. His labs indicate that he does not have pancreatitis, and overall his lab work looks good. He had a full senior work up, as well as urinanalysis and the test for the pancreatitis (negative). He has been dehydrated, not eating well, nauseated and vomiting. Is the next step to do an ultrasound?

Over the last several years, we have had wonderful results clearing up chronic diarrhea in cats like yours and cats with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) using a product called Tylan. This product is not labeled for cats but works like a charm and clears loose stool up in 24-48 hours. Tylan is an inexpensive, bitter tasting yellow powder labeled for poultry. It has no adverse side effects other than if you use too much it can cause temporary constipation.
This sounds like a case of feline pancreatitis; an inflammatory condition of the pancreas that results in anorexia, lethargy due to abdominal pain etc. It is harder to diagnose in cats then dogs. An anorexic cat is suceptible to develpoing a secondary case of fatty liver disease and when that happens a feeding tube needs to be placed.
Treatment for acute pancreatitis
People with acute pancreatitis are treated with IV fluids and pain medications in the hospital. In up to 25% of patients, the pancreatitis can be severe and patients may need to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). In the ICU, the patient is closely watched because pancreatitis can damage the heart, lungs, or kidneys. Some cases of severe pancreatitis can result in death of pancreatic tissue.
Have have a 6yr old ragdoll.She has been tested for pancreatitis,that was negative.She has always weighed 10 pounds or an ounce give or take.On she is losing weight ,throwing up a lot,not eating or drinking much.and with that using her litter box very little.I have switched vets for numerous reasons.Should I take her in for more test and for what teast?
ploryi blood test/liver/pancrease panel and possibly a endoscope to find out what is going on in your stomach. A gi specialist would probably be best. If this is truly pancreatitis you would need to stop drinking to let the pancrease heal before permament damage is done...(normally)
BUT i'm not a doctor.. a visit with a gi specialist would be the way to go..
i think too much meat is not good as too much protein is bad for kittie's kidneys.. One of my cats only prefers the "gravy" in the moist food too-Fancy Feast just came out w/a "Gravy Lovers" line that's about .70 a can (here, anyway) that's alot more gravy than the usual cans so you can try that.
Because the vet gave us muscle relaxants and rimadahl to give for pain management, his pancreatitis flared up again. Now he is in the hospital on intravenous fluids and pain med injections. I just want to know anyone's thoughts on this? I really believe if he didn't have problems with his neck, the pancreatitis would have been controllable. But b/c of his "slipped disk" in his neck steroids is usually the treatment, but he can't have steroids b/c of the pancreatitis.
Fasting is OK for dogs, since they do not get fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis) in the way cats do. Abdominal X-Rays and blood work is necessary to monitor the progress of the therapy.
These disease can be very serious without therapy and may rarely require surgery if the intestines telescope into one another. IBD will require a hypoallergenic food once your dog is well enough to eat.

Hi Kelley. I'm so sorry to hear about your little boxer. Pancreatitis is a terrible disease for dogs (and people) to endure. If your vet hasn't yet performed an ultrasound, that will be the next step. They'll need to check to see how swollen the pancreas is, if there is something like a tumor or pseudo-cyst, or even a birth defect causing the trouble. It's even possible there is something blocking the pancreatitic or common bile duct at the root of the problem.
