Common Questions and Answers about Pancreatitis and nutrition

pancreatitis

Avatar m tn Drank too much for several yrs, normal nutrition. Occasional exercise, have stopped due to symptoms below. I wasn’t feeling well, so I went for checkup, which I hadn’t done in a long time. Following test results, quit drinking (2.5 mos ago). Tests: liver enzymes high at initial visit (AST/ALT: 105/90), 2.5 mos later it’s 27/50.
Avatar m tn My internal medicine doctor hasn’t had much to say (“maybe a little inflammation”) and doesn’t appear interested in symptoms (“probably combination gas and stress”). He says it’s taken longer for ALT to fall than expected, but not alarming. Next step is more LFTs, then a GI (until then, waiting game). Would cirrhosis be detected on an U/S? How likely is chronic pancreatitis given these symptoms? Wouldn’t that have shown some abnormalities on the pancreatic enzyme tests?
1916673 tn?1420233270 In due course, I will also be adding a fruit and a meat nutrition data sheet too - and I intend breaking down the recipes I have mentioned in my first post, so owners will know what is in each one.
Avatar f tn Then, I kept having elevated amylase and lipase levels, which required hospitalization for pain meds, fluids, and iv nutrition many times. In my case, when my lipase and amylase levels started to return to normal, I wasn't better like the drs said I should be...I still had really bad pain and if I would try eating or drinking too soon it would flare things up all over again. I couldn't have any fancy tests done because I had gastric bypass.
Avatar f tn Hi Tony! I've been voraciously reading your group's postings/answers. My dog was perfectly fine with SLIGHT high BUN (35-38). I put her on the NF diet in an effort to keep the kidney disease at bay, and suddenly her pancreatitis went crazy! She got very ill and didn't want to eat. I tried to put her back on her old food to get her back to normal, but it was too late. She's been hospitalized for four days. Her BUN/Creat "stabilized" at 116/6.7.
Avatar n tn very concerned my bulldog is 7 years old and im a wreck hes been in and out of the vet hospital getting iv fluids anti vomiting meds and anti biotics but he still will not eat i got him home again today supposibly his liver and pancreas are inflammed and enlarged and they dunt know why so they let me take him home 2 see if we can persuede him 2 eat but he still is not interested in food at all!!
Avatar m tn 0 High Everything else if fine in the panel and in my Urinanalysis. I am wondering if I can get any advice on this. I had acute Pancreatitis and I have elevated Triglycerides.
675347 tn?1365460645 Some dogs can overindulge for years and suddenly develop pancreatitis. Symptoms of pancreatitis are vomiting, inability to keep down water, lack of appetite, lethargy and fever as the condition worsens. Treatment is mainly inpatient supportive care. The dog must have complete digestive rest which means nothing - not even water - by mouth. An IV is necessary for fluids, antibiotics and eventually nutrition if the condition persists more than a week - which it easily can do.
611067 tn?1458591483 Thanks! Mary, I'm still on mostly liquid, but I have read up about foods you can eat with chronic pancreatitis (which is what my family doctor thinks I have). Basically, it's a low-fat, low-sugar diet with complex carbs. On Friday night, I ate a sandwich with lean turkey, low-fat cream cheese and avocado. It was awesome and did not bother my stomach. I was told to keep the fat down 30 grams a day only.
Avatar f tn Hi Chan & Karla, In reply to your two posts, yes, we did take her off the Iams when we switched over to the I.D. Hill's wet and dry foods. And the vet thinks the prednisone is what gave her pancreatitis, given long-term for her allergies. So, we also took her off that for good. I did ask initially about pain relief, and so the vet has this in mind for us, I recall he gave tramadol for another dog we had.
Avatar n tn Trouble was I had a really bad Nicorette habit. Low and behold I have chronic pancreatitis and if I chew the gum--the pancreatic pain skyrockets. I would say "YES" Nicorette either causes, triggers, or aggrevates pancreatitis.
Avatar m tn They are really still not positive what, exactly, causes pancreatitis but dogs who are overweight and dogs who have a lot of human table food in their diets are the most prone because of the high fat content in these foods. Our food is not geared toward the way a dog's digestive system works, so it can be the most expensive, well cooked meal in the world, it's still not OK for a dog to eat in any quantity or for any length of time.
Avatar n tn My dog had acute pancreatitis over the weekend and I took him to an emergency vet on Sunday and to his vet on Mon. They both kept him overnight, IV, blood work, meds, and his vet did a rectal x-ray and abdominal x-ray with barium to look for obstruction. He found dirt/sand. My dog ate cat poop covered in dirt. He is at home now doing fine and I have him on a bland diet of canned white chicken and brown rice only. However, his lower abd/belly is a little distended and hard.
Avatar f tn im now being directed to take a gastric emptying study which i already have had done a year ago and those results were normal..my question is...is here a link between pancreatitis and bile reflux? and if so, would it not be indicative of an obstruction (due to the minor dilation) of my pancreatic duct....is there any remedies or speculation around these test results?
129422 tn?1222699589 dog food) has been having intermittent tummy and obscure pain issues for a month and and half and after 10 trips to vet's office and three blood profiles (one comprehensive one), other than initial dx of pancreatitis, vet is stumped as to what might be wrong. Initially (first week of August), our Maltese did vomit and wouldn't eat (and he always eats voraciously). Taken to vet around first week in August. Xrays showed nothing.
Avatar f tn I went right into the hopspital when I had pain and was dehydrated, but after 3 days the enzyme levels showed it to be pancreatitis. I spent another 4or 5 days in the hospital with no food, just IV nutrition and pain meds. I asked for an ERCP to find out what caused it and after the procedure I again spent another week in the hospital. You are right it is a horrible experience, and over the years I have had that pain time and time again.
Avatar n tn I had hyperparathyroidism and it was my understanding that was separate from my thyroid issue. I'm not sure that is clinically correct though. Hope you get more answers.
Avatar m tn Now its been basically non-stop, confirmed by mri, that it is chronic pancreatitis, and fatty liver. Im being sent to a pain specialist for the pain, and hoping he can offer relief, because Ive been recieving very little help from my doctor with that. Im 5'5", used to be about 138lbs, and now am 162, with gain of 10lbs a month on a low fat diet, no meat, no bread, soft food. I dont understand except unless wieght gain is from thyroid going wrong, im hypothyroid.
Avatar m tn Even if she survived a bout of acute pancreatitis, she could end up with chronic pancreatitis and on an extreme lowfat diet for the rest of her life. For the poor dog's sake, I hope your boyfriend wakes up to reality before my mother-in-law did. Best of luck to you both.

Avatar n tn t really given much say in the matter, as the pancreatitis was a nasty attack and I was strongly advised to get my gallbladder out asap after it. It was a straightforward procedure, with no after effects. I can't really say I felt better, because apart from the pancreatitis incident, I never had any problems beforehand! I do sometimes suffer with the "dumping syndrome" which, whilst unpleasant, doesn't worry me too much as I believe it's normal.
Avatar f tn t seem to care about the Pneumobilia and one Dr seemed to think its normal and I might have it forever, but I am concerned especially about possible infection coming from the small bowel into the Biliary hepatic vessels and also can this air be causing the ongoing Pancreatitis?
Avatar m tn been suffering from pancreatitis and doctors thinking my gallbladder may be messed up....How common is it to have had a normal HIDA scan with no apparent stones?
