Avatar n tn I have never experienced Schizoaffective Disorder as a patient, but I manage cases with Schizoaffective Disorder for a Behavioral Health insurance company. It sounds like the symptoms you are most concerned about is the disconnected, "spacey" feeling your daughter is experiencing. The feeling is not uncommon among persons who take antipsychotic medications.
Avatar n tn Every time he gets better and gets out of hospital he starts his bad habitS which is drinking and leaves the country and goes to England and he makes bad chioces. It's very hard to please him and make him listen. PLEASE HELP ME TO HELP HIM.
1052851 tn?1307741160 And I will add that schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia with a mood disorder which in my case is bipolar. In schizoaffective disorder a person experiences psychosis all the time whereas in bipolar with psychotic features it is only during moodswings. You could ask your psychiatrist more about it and we have some websites linked up for information. One that's not linked up that you could find some clinically accurate information on in addition to Medhelp is Schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn Hello, i've got a daughter,25.years old who has schizoaffective disorder, she's in hospital at the moment, already 2. month---------i'm despair there's no change in her condition with all the treatment what she get. I would like to know if it's possible more detail's about her illness & treatment.
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
728480 tn?1312059930 Well you are talking about two different issues. First of all, psychological and Freudian theories are now considered outdated as regards psychiatric disabilities (my prefered term for mental illness). That doesn't mean people with psychiatric disabilities don't experience normal feelings that need psychotherapy. And there are complex issues.
1546631 tn?1321643204 ll start with our story, my 8yo little boy has current diagnoses of psychotic disorder NOS, mood disorder NOS, and ADHD, combined type. We are pending diagnoses of Schizoaffective disorder, Bipolar disorder with psychosis. It's been a rough road, and still is. His meds are constantly being changed, and we just had another hospitalization. I have hope for the future, and believe we can all find support here. What is your story?
1351968 tn?1278205300 Schizophrenia mainly involves the thought processes being messed up while bipolar disorder mainly involves the emotions being messed up. That's an easy way to remember it. Schizophrenia however can mimic bipolar disorder when it first affects the emotions if it even does to begin with but then generally the emotions dull out and become blunted as if it were a knife being over used that has dulled out.
Avatar m tn My psychiatrist has me listed as having schizoaffective disorder, OCD, and GAD at the same time. Is really possible, according to the definitions? Or are the symptoms of GAD included, essentially, already in OCD in schizoaffective disorder?
915369 tn?1355314810 About 2 months ago my psychiatrist told me she felt I actually had Schizoaffective disorder instead of bipolar and referred me to a clinic for people with "severe" mental health issues. I then got a call today telling me my psychiatrist called the referral people and asked them to refer me to the bipolar clinic instead (which is like an 8 month wait here). Does this mean she's decided I have bipolar instead of schizoaffective disorder and does this change my medications at all?
720657 tn?1233011567 There has been a controversy about whether schizoaffective disorder is a type of schizophrenia or a type of mood disorder. Today, most clinicians and researchers agree that it is primarily a form of schizophrenia. Although its exact prevalence is not clear, it may range from two to five in a thousand people (- i.e., 0.2% to 0.5%). Schizoaffective disorder may account for one-fourth or even one-third of all persons with schizophrenia.
Avatar n tn Somehow myself, I ended up with schizophrenia and apparently not enough mood issues to be able to be diagnosed with a mood disorder as well (to end up with schizoaffective disorder) even though the bipolar disorder runs stronger in the family.

Avatar f tn Before my current recovery I had full blown mania and also had psychotic episodes (which need not go with it, I have schizoaffective disorder but there is also bioplar with psychotic features where psychosis only occurs during mood changes, in schizoaffective disorder its all the time). Things were disturbing and extreme and I needed medication as soon as I had my first psychotic break.
Avatar f tn Hi I use when needed clonazepam for irritability, I have Bipolar Disorder and I am on Lithium and Seroquel also, and Prozac when depressed, clonazepam when either low or high as an extra weapon to curb my snappy head. problem i find if used too regularly when depressed is it can make me worse.
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment. Bipolar with psychotic features is generally defined by psychotic thoughts or auditory or other hallucinations occuring only during mood swings..
1256303 tn?1291752568 I have schizoaffective disorder (with the bipolar aspect) and before my current recovery I had psychotic thoughts and delusions at all times (depending on my response to treatment as well of course). I do know that for schizoaffective disorder delusions and psychosis occur at all times whereas in bipolar with psychotic features they occur only during moodswings.
Avatar n tn You could have depression with psychotic features or schizoaffective disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder and the mood disorder aspect is bipolar. I am recovered now with an antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study glycine as I've said on other posts but I know what the experience is like. But there are other forms of schizoaffective disorder that have depression instead of bipolar as the mood phase. And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away.
Avatar f tn I have noticed that I am very preoccupied lately. Very deep in thought. A few of my friends have told me that sometimes I don't even hear what they say or when they ask me a question I don't respond because it seems like "I'm thinking really hard about something." I have noticed that I will be walking and become so lost in thought that I forget where I'm going.
Avatar f tn I want to ask other people with schizophrenia related illnesses this question. I have schizoaffective disorder and I come from a family that didn't know anything about mental illness when I was growing up. They treated me like a normal child with behaviour issues only. They taught me I could do anything I want as long as i work hard and maintain good values. They didn't restrict me from dating. But now that i was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder they changed.
Avatar f tn It is not his fault he tried to commit suicide, it is part of the disorder and the biggest sign that he not only needs help but loving people to help him through this.
Avatar f tn Good points - I just meant that a lot of people think we're somehow cured - oh don't we know we aren't!l! I was recently diagnosed bp1 but my doctor is continuing to discuss the schizoaffective disorder from time to time. What's the major difference in bp1 and schizoaffective? I know it's in the BP family. Your postings are always so informative.
Avatar f tn ve went through similar experiences and I have schizophrenia which is related to schizoaffective disorder.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with schizoaffective and adult adhd. I take abilify and citalopram for the schizoaffective disorder and vyvanse for the adhd symptoms. I find that since i have been given adhd meds, my condition has stabilized completely. I was not well on the schizoaffective meds alone. i still had problems concentrating and with focus .As well as social problems and listening to others and paying attention.
1039200 tn?1314912008 Yes I used to have this problem before my current recovery. But for myself as a person with schizoaffective disorder some of it was part of the negative symptoms of schizoaffective disorder and not "reading" people right. Sometimes I would tell an inappropriate off color joke for no reason and start laughing. The family member who is not under treatment yet for bipolar can do that at times and I didn't know what it was growing up and I only know now.
1546631 tn?1321643204 He has multiple psych issues (psychotic disorder nos r/o schizoaffective bipolar type, mood disorder nos, r/o bipolar with psychosis; and ADHD), and has been on different meds throughout the last year, with two hospitalizations. He's been on the current ones for the past two months, with no big side effects (seroquel, latuda, Tenex, benadryl). He had something new happen today. Normally if he is sleepwalking, his eyes glaze over and I can tell he's not awake.
Avatar f tn I have schizoaffective disorder and despite the fact that the new treatment I am on in Phase II FDA study (for information google "Dr. Javitt, glycine, my case study will be published in a psychiatric journal) has caused me to have a full recovery from schizoaffective disorder I still need talk therapy. Yes when I see my psychopharmocologist medication is discussed but everyday life issues are as well I'd well say you took the quote out of context as the other post showed.
3579868 tn?1348739509 Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in. There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder. I think it is actually on the schizophrenia spectrum but from my understanding it can be like a cross between bipolar and schizophrenia.
719785 tn?1232901518 As a person who has recovered from schizoaffective disorder with an experimental antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study (read through my posts if you wish) I can say in having exprienced thoughts like that before recovery that they sound psychotic to me. It should be noted that I have schizoaffective disorder and with the bipolar aspect of schizoaffective disorder when I was put on Anafranil which is similar to Prozac it made me psychotic. The same is true of bipolar.
