I have a pain in my ear - not like an ear ache. If I push on the back of my ear where it attaches to my head it is painful. It's more on the lower part of my ear. Sometimes I can feel the pain when I open and close my jaw. And I can feel it if I lay on that ear at night. My mother who is a nurse said it could be a swollen gland right behind my ear. It feels like it's close to the skin - not in my inner ear. I've had the pain a couple months. Any ideas?
For two days now I have been having a sharp stabbing pain behind my left ear which lasts for only a second but occurs at least every 30 seconds. I have had no head injury. It hurts really bad (8/10) when it is occurring but when it is gone I have no other symptoms.
My mom just began to get really bad pain behind her left ear (she's in her 40's). It started when she woke up and doesn't seem to get any better. Nothing is swollen. She said that it hurts to open her jaw all the way as well. And that it almost feels like she has a kink in her neck. What would you diagnose this as? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPREACIATED!!!
one other that i have, which i have not seen addressed anywhere else, is a pain that is almost crippling that runs up my neck and right behind my affected ear. my doctor says that this is a 'typical' meniere's headache. is this the headache that everyone else experiences?

On Sunday I noticed it had got really big (visible, about pea sized) and then found another one at the top of my neck too. The one behind my ear is hard and painless and the one on my neck feels bigger and softer and is a bit tender.

I'd say the pain lasts no more than 1-2 seconds but it is occurring every few minutes. I have taken 3 Advil and a half a Vicadin within the last 24 hours with no relief. I have a lot of tension in my neck, shoulders and back between the shoulder blades. I never have headaches. This pain seems to pulse down the left side of my neck. Anyone had a diagnosis for anything similar?
I suspect sitting in one position, the head and neck in one position all day everyday. Maybe that’s what causes it. I’ve had this pain behind my left ear for days now. Then I came to this site and read about everyone’s symptoms, very similar to mine. Today is my day off and I avoided the computer except to write this, so I can help others hopefully. The pain doesn’t appear much anymore, just rarely. Also for the past few days I’ve been exercising my face and head.

Hi, A lump behind the ear could be due to throat infection, insect bite, accidental trauma to the site, ear infection , etc. Lymph nodes in the region are known as post auricular lymph nodes and can enlarge secondary to infection, inflammation, etc. You could try some warm compresses at the site, warm saline gargles for his sore throat and some oral antihistamine medications for the swelling. This could be mastoiditis, cervical lymphadenopathy or parotitis.

I thought I was having a stroke. The doctor said it was shingles and ask if I had a rash. No, i didn't. He put me on Valtrax and said to take the pain meds. already prescribed for me. Over the week-end, I slept for almost 2 days and felt as if I would die with the flu like symptons.
It could be something as simple as a blocked pore behind your ear, that just needs to be emptied somehow. I get them occasionally, and they can tend to be a royal pain in the neck, until it is gone, but it would be a good idea to have it looked at, before trying to do anything with it yet.
I forgot about it until yesterday when I was showering washing behind the ears with soap when I felt two more lumps (that are not painful) behind the ear on the neck area. I am Hypothyroid and last year I was experiencing throbbing in the ear. They ran tests and found I have a very small lump on my thyroid not to be alarmed too small for biopsy. For the past 8 months or so I have been experiencing pain in the ear when I sleep on that side.

(its not on the ear itself, its on the bone behind the ear.) And they said it was a cyst and gave me antibiotics, and they made it worse. And the doctor said it wasn't my lymps. It will swell up and i will get dizzy and light headed and have alot of severe pain, and then the next day it will be fine. so... I have no idea whats going on.
I have checked a doctor twice now about lumps behind my ear. I have 2 lumps. According to the doctor I visited, the one on the bone is a lymph node and the one behind my earlobe in the pressure point (joint of jaw) is a cyst. These both occur behind my right ear. Apparently I also have a few lymph nodes in the side of my neck (not sure how many I don't know how to feel them) which were not there on the first doctor checkup.
Recently she felt a small lump/ lymph node behind the ear. She didn't have any fever but occasionally she feels itching sensation in her ears and she used to insert an ear bud to stop itching. Also she have a some scratch on her head. She went to a doctor and told her to observe it and advised her to check if it disappears after a month. A month passed and still the lymph node was palpable but remained with the same size.
About a year ago I noticed a small hard unmoveable lump behind my right ear.. (between my ear and my hair line of my neck) I wasn't to worried about it until about two weeks ago when my wife was able to SEE IT. I haven't been touching it a whole lot cause I figured it was probably a lymph node, and I didn't want to irratate it. It doesn't hurt and it is now about the size of a nickel.... can someone please give me an idea what is going on?
The lumps behind ear due to earrings sounds like what I have. but mine is on one ear. Ok, I am a 33year old female, diagnosed with Cin II and HPV 16 seven years ago and diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis 5 years ago. I have 3 children 7 yrs, 5 yrs and 3 months old. about three years ago, the back of my earring pierced into the back of my ear but it did not bleed or was there any cut. After that day, anytime I touch the area, it hurts me.
Doctor, For the past 5 months or so I have noticed a small lump behind my left ear. This bump is on the bonde behind the ear (NOT the front of the face). The lump is hard, fixed, and not movable. It causes me no pain, and is about the size of a small pea. I have been playing with it lately, and do not think it has changed it size, and if it has it has been very minimal. About 2 months ago I had a doctor check it out, and the GP said that he didn't think it was anything to be concerned about.
Is the lump in the bony area behind the ear or in the soft tissue behind the ear as if it is a lymph node? If it is a swollen lymph node then yes it could be from an infection. But do you have any other symptoms? When a lymph node is hard it may not be a lymph node or it could be a problem. So you should see a doctor about this. You probably should see an ear nose and throat doctor if you can go straight to one. They can feel it and decide the next course of action.
I found a lump behind my ear. It is hard and doesnt hurt at all. Its strange in shape and not irratated at all. its been almost a month. I am concerned especially because I am a smoker and its close to my neck.
Yep--lymph nodes----I just had a infection that dealt with my lymph nodes on the right side lower neck up to the top of my neck with the one behind my ear very very sore---I did not run fever---but I had heaches, and very tired----I did go to the doctor and we talked about mono---but he said it would not affect the nodes in that way---he did put me on some antibiotics----they helped----but I had to go back and then we talked about mumps---all in all everything was fine----I just had a bad infect
