Common Questions and Answers about Pain neck artery

Almost three years later, same thing, but this time it's the external carotid artery, 100% blocked. No surgery this time. I do have pain in the neck. Thought it was the scar tissue from the past surgery. If you are not sure about anything, please get it checked. If you're lucky, you will have some kind of symptom. Don't ignore them!
Dr said it was my cartid artery and gave me an injection directly in my neck (artery). Now pain is back. What is this and could it be a sign of a serious problem? I dont want another shot in the neck-i'm scared.
I have been having for about 6 months pain on my right side of my neck, where it gets very intense! Sometimes it feels like a straight line down to my shoulder & chest. After doing research on carotid arteries it states there is NO SYMPTOMS! But i have read all the posts here which it seems everyone is having pain.
By Friday morning I was in severe pain and my neck was swollen. Sounds crazy, but if I touched the carotid artery it got much worse. I went to the doctor Friday afternoon and he said there was inflammation around the carotid artery. I was/am also suffering from extreme anxiety, something I've never had a problem with. He put me on Celebrex (anti-inflammatory for my neck and gave me Zoloft and Xanax for the anxiety.

I have to press on it hard to tollerate the pain. I am worried that this further heart related problems. Today the neck pain has been on and off most of the day. I am a 64 year old woman.
Hence, improve your posture and see. Do neck exercises. I have seen my GP doctor once a week, and have mentioned to them that I have been having headaches and the I am now experiencing pain on the right side of my neck, in what i believe to be my carotid artery. The pain is a very sharp pain that only last a couple of seconds, and is sporadic. The pain can last about a minute or two, I'm scared as to what this could be and am not getting any answers. Any answers or place you can direct me would be helpful.

Have you followed up with your doctor at all? I would certainly start there. pain in the side of the neck could be in the carotid, and then it may be from a nerve or muscle too. If you are concerned, make an appointment with your pcp.
Hi Welcome to the MedHelp forum! In all probability this is neck stiffness due to wrong sleeping posture. Other than that it can be occipital neuralgia which results from compression of higher cervical vertebral nerves. It can also be due to an inflamed carotid artery or jugular vein. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage without examining. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper investigations and referral. Hope this helps. Take care!

If your neck MRI is clear then the pain could be referred to the neck due to spinal problems of the upper back, or it could be due to tight neck muscles, or due to stress and anxiety or due to clots in the carotid artery. Hence you can get a MRI of the upper back spine and a dopplar study of the carotids. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Meanwhile use a hard bed to sleep. Avoid a pillow.

I am a 39-year-old female, and I have been having terrible left anterior neck pain for about 1 month. The pain seems to be close to my carotid artery and runs along the trachea. My left jaw and ear also hurt. I have been to an internal medicine and ENT doctor, and I have had an MRI and CT scan of my neck, and I was told that everything appears normal. The ENT doctor said my lymph nodes are swollen, but the MRI was normal. My thyroid is not swollen and TSH and free T4 levels are fine.
As for chest pain, a dull ache usually directly behind the sternum(breast-bone) which radiates or travels down the left arm and also up the neck and jaw with sweating, nausea, pain between the shoulder blades being symptoms of a heart-attack(AMI). For insight, the coronary spasm contracts the muscles in the wall of an artery in the heart making the artery constrict. When the artery constricts, blood flow through the artery is either stopped or slowed. When this occurs, the heart does not get enough blood. The symptoms would occur during the intermittent spasms and that would include chest pain described as a feeling of tightness, pressure, heaviness, squeezing, or burning.
I immediately stopped and was in pain and have been in pain for the rest of the day. The pain started and increased until I was unable to move my neck very much beyond looking straight ahead and turning it to the right about 75 degrees. I have been unable to move it beyond about a 5 degree turn to the left without shooting pain on the right hand side of my neck concentrated in two local regions which I'll describe below.
