Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker surgery remove

pacemaker

Avatar f tn My 6 month check-up post surgery 24 hour Holter recording is 39,000 heart beats. The ablation was not successful. The cardiologist is indicating I may need a pacemaker. I can't seem to find information that explains how a pacemaker can manage PVCs. Can anyone point me to resources or help me understand how this works?
Avatar n tn To my knowledge, the closest point to skin level of wires of a pacemaker it is just in the union with the pacemaker itself, therefore the easy thing it is just to detach them and leave them inside the pacemaker pocket. Why to cut them?. Now some of those wires are quite long and some surgeons roll them in circles to shorten them. At least theoretically, if there are a few circles and he is close to any electro magnetic field some current can be generated by induction producing a zap.
Avatar n tn Has anyone ever encounterd this type of pain after pacemaker surgery, and if so, what was the cause and what did your doctor do to correct the problem? Thank you.
621803 tn?1302888341 Yes when I was 34 weeks pregnant they put me completely under general to insert a stent into my kidney to drain it and to manually remove 2 stones (there were still 2 more I was passing that they couldn't remove). Apparently the baby stayed awake the entire procedure and was kicking at the urologist every time he tried to put the tube into my kidney.
Avatar f tn This is really difficult to answer because there are many things to consider. Risking open heart surgery, risking not damaging the heart further by trying to remove a needle could make matters far worse and not better. If the AV node was damaged due to the needle, there is a high chance it would have been damaged by repairing the septal defect because they have to suture right in that area. What I would be more concerned with is the likelihood of the needles moving and causing more damage.
2053419 tn?1330412329 I had a pacemaker implanted in 2008, I have since had angioplasty because I also had a port and it caused my superior vena cava? to be blocked. Now they have told me that there is scar tissue on all my pacemaker leads and my blood is having to re route so to speak. I have just started having chest pains around my pacemaker and this time they lasted almost 3 hours.. They are trying to decide whether to remove the scar tissue with laser? Should I be concerned about the new pain?
Avatar f tn To remove the pacemaker itself isn't difficult. They make a small incision like the first time, remove the pacemaker and disconnect the leads, clean out the "pocket" and close things up. Or they can connect a new one before they sew you up again. If they also want to remove the leads, that's another story. The leads become rather embedded in the heart tissue and they don't simply slide out like unplugging the toaster.
Avatar n tn My mom is in a state of denial about the terminal nature of his condition and is taking Murphy for an echocardiogram to see if he is a candidate for a pacemaker so that he can then undergo surgery to remove this massive growth. (The vets told her he would not survive the surgery without a pacemaker due to the CHF). I'm very concerned about her putting this very old and very sick dog through multiple invasive and expensive procedures.
Avatar m tn my mother had a pacemaker implant ans was told that if she is ok in the next three weeks it will be removed. is this possible? To remove the pacemaker?? so why was it necessary to do this in the first place?
1411632 tn?1281642993 I had a halter monitor test done by my PCP and they said they recorded several pauses. One that was 9.5 seconds, one 6 seconds and two 3 seconds. I was referred to a cardiologist who recommended a pacemaker. What are the odds that in that 24 hour halter test there are 4 pauses but now my pacemaker has not recorded any in an 8 month period? I also did not have tachycardia until after the pacemaker implantation.
900662 tn?1469390305 surgery was 6am on april 9th, got home at 2pm. rotator cuff & torn bicep tendon typing with one hand, i'll find how much hardware i had installed in two weeks when i see the dr. pain is about 7, taking my pain meds every 4 hours..
Avatar f tn m right handed. My pacemaker is implanted at the right upper chest.
351404 tn?1299489130 t have the bradycardia prior to taking the med then I would question even more about surgery for a pacemaker; which would be invasive and if your hr then changes could be dangerous for them to remove. You may want to ask in the expert forum on medhelp also to see what the doctors say =) it's worth a shot to get a 2nd opinion; but it may take a few tries to get a question in, so keep trying.
Avatar n tn She fell down on the cement and cracked her skull. She needed emergency brain surgery and almost did not survive. She received a pacemaker (Medtronic brand) and lived another 12 years. Your EF is low. Normal is 55 to 60. Your cardiologist knows what is best for you. Sometimes a person does feel fine and has no symptoms, but that doesn't mean that everything is okay. I have heard people say that their EF went up after they received a defibrillator.
Avatar m tn Recent pacemaker pocket and blood cultures are negative, but my cardio doc is gravely concerened with endocarditis. When I call him this morning reporting the fever, he will almost certainly remove my pacemaker. After I posted the above question, I found excellent case studies that show it's fairly common for pacemaker pockets to be flooded with Betadine. There is a mild concern for temporary thyroid and renal reacton, but both resolve well with time. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn i had 3 open heart surgery and on my 2nd. pacemaker.. my first pacemaker last me for 18yrs. and just got my 2nd. pacemaker Dec.2006.. my pacemaker was implanted in my upper chest on the right side.. only thing i hate the surgery doctor told me he would use the same cut as the other pacemaker but when i woke up he cut me in another spot.. well i can say.. ask your doctor his he using the same cut as the first pacemaker was in..
Avatar f tn These are for collecting fluids from the surgery which would otherwise collect in the chest. Once the fluid stops, they remove the tubes which is a relief. The pacemaker wire will be removed at that time also. You probably wont have an apetite for a few days and will be in discomfort, like any surgery there is always discomfort. However, don't just hope the nurses/doctors know, tell them if you need more pain relief.
Avatar f tn My mother is 83. She has had irregular heartbeat for nearly 20 years and had a pacemaker implanted 3 years ago. Her last echogram showed her EF to be 20% and she has had several episodes of congestive heart failure. She is physically run down.....weight loss, loss of muscle, not to mention depression. Her cardiologist wants to implant a biventricular pacemaker. I am wondering if the benefits will out weigh the risks at this point.
675084 tn?1233087505 good you ask me.. my pacemaker is set to 80beats and I'm 100% depend on my pacemaker.. i have a Medtronic this my 2nd. pacemaker... my first Medtronic pacemaker i had it for 18 yrs. until the doctor turn it down than it didn't work good.. had to get a new one.. in Dec. it will be 2yrs. i had my pacemaker check last week and i find out the doctor that put my pacemaker in didn't set my pacemaker for life depend.. Good news is now my pacemaker is set for it not to be ever turn off..
Avatar f tn My mother had her pacemaker replaced in March 09 She went for a pacemaker check today. She has had arrhytmias the past several months so she has an appt next week to see her doc. What causes arrhytmias even when you have a pacemaker. Is this normal? Pacemakers are supposed to treat this, right?
Avatar m tn The pain associated with an implanted pacemaker may be musculoskeletal or nerve related. Most likely related to the minor surgery required for insertion of the pacemaker. This type of pain related to the incision should heal within weeks. If you have persistent chest pain at the site of the pacemaker, it might be reasonable to see your doctor so that possible causes can be evaluated.
