Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker surgery heartbeat

pacemaker

351404 tn?1299489130 I am really puzzled as to how these two can be side by side, ie why a drug to slow the heartbeat and a pacemaker to speed it up? My surgery doctor has just reduced this to 7.5mg (to see what happens).
Avatar n tn However, after the surgery she has still been kept on pacemaker as cardiologists said her heart rate is still on 48-55 per minute (which is quite slow). The cardiologists have suggested that if the heart rate does not return back to normal a permanent pacemaker maybe required. Can anyone please suggest whether to wait for the heart beat to be back to normal or go for the pacemaker. Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar f tn no. 84 is not high, it's only generally if it gets to over 100 at rest that tachycardia is diagnosed. As long as his heart rate is stable and there are no rhythm problems, then there is certainly no requirement for a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn A friend of mine had it done, but I had the sneaky suspicion - and still do - that they screwed up his ablation and now the pacemaker has to provide the heartbeat completely and not only when needed.
Avatar n tn My wife had a mitral vakve repair 3 years ago as well as a maze to correct AF; heartbeat was in teh upper 90's so she then had a cardioversion to regularise heartbeat and this worked fine, bringing it down to the mid-60's. Earlier this year her specialist replaced her calcium channel blocker with an ARB. Shortly afterwards she experienced a heart attack; a subsequent ECG indicated a Taku-tsubo syndrome as well as Troponin positivity.
Avatar f tn A fast resting heartbeat (>100 in adults) is called tachycardia. There can be a lot of causes for it. If it needs to be treated, there are several possibilities for solving it (medications, cardiac ablation, ICD, ....) A pacemaker is used for speeding up the heart rate, so in bradycardia situations (too slow heart rate). This is not gonna help you. An implantable defibrillator (ICD) can in some situations help against a too fast heartbeat.
Avatar f tn The problem is is that the new Pacemaker is not like that at all! My heartbeat goes from 56 to 93, back to 71 then 86, and has gone a high as 100. It is all over the place. The Enrythym never went under 80. This Adapta is not doing that. Since the new Pacemaker I am weak, dizzy, have had low oxygen levels, and chest pain. Can anyone answer me? I feel that they have put in the wrong Pacemaker.
1526054 tn?1291588594 by plaque or cholesterol would you not need to have a bypass surgery or something? Or is a pacemaker enough to correct this? My mom had to have a pacemaker and I have cardiac hx on both sides of the family with everyone!! Several have pacemakers and one had a defibrillator. I had a cousin in his later 50's who just dropped dead from the heart and also an uncle with the same thin happen....
Avatar m tn m wondering if because of my fitness level my slow heartbeat is really not a problem (a year ago my heartbeat was 55-60). I also wonder if increasing my atenolol from 25 to 50 mg is aggrevating the problem.
Avatar f tn He then had me wear a holter monitor for 24 hours which I just found out ( from a cardiologist that my doctor set me up with ) showed 252 pauses in my heartbeat . I am scheduled for a stress test and an echocardiogram next, however the cardiologist is saying that I need a pacemaker. This seems very extreme to me since I have absolutely no symtoms. My question is " is this the best solution?
621803 tn?1302888341 Ok, here's my situation. I have a heart disorder called Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia. I won't bore everyone with the details of it, but I've had two catheter ablations and a pacemaker implanted then because of one of the surgeries. I just found out yesterday that I need to get another lead put in my pacemaker because one isn't doing the job anymore and my heart is having lots of arrythmias and is skipping beats a bunch.
Avatar n tn Ever since I had a pacemaker implanted, my heat goes in to ineffective overdrive after walking only a couple of steps. (120 +) On the otherhand, even strenuous workouts on strength machines results in only small (70 to 87) increases in pulse rate not accompanied by any discomfort. Under those conditions. my heart seems to pump normal.
Avatar m tn After the bypass surgery they found that the pacemaker was shorting out. Had it reinstalled 2 days later. Since the surgery I get periods when I am exerting myself where I run completely out of energy, can't take the next step. They have tried to find the problem with a half dozen different tests but it wasn't until the AFib running almost continuosly that I came to the conclusion that it was the cause of my weekness etc..
Avatar n tn i had 3 open heart surgery and on my 2nd. pacemaker.. my first pacemaker last me for 18yrs. and just got my 2nd. pacemaker Dec.2006.. my pacemaker was implanted in my upper chest on the right side.. only thing i hate the surgery doctor told me he would use the same cut as the other pacemaker but when i woke up he cut me in another spot.. well i can say.. ask your doctor his he using the same cut as the first pacemaker was in..
Avatar m tn I was laying on my couch when I had two hard heartbeat. Like my heart was having a problem pumping? Is this a sign of something I should go get checked out?
255722 tn?1452546541 This allows the pacemaker cells within the SA node to be in control of generating and pacing the heartbeat. But, if a particular group of cells in areas remote from the SA node become extra- or hyper-excitable they can take over as the pacemaker for one or several beats, or for a longer term. You might think of the heart's cells as a schoolyard full of young boys playing soccer. Some are inherently quick and fast and are always on top of the game, while others usually play a little slower.
Avatar n tn Her old pacemaker kept her heartbeat at a constant 70 beats; the new one varies from a low of 60 up to a maximum of 120 (it has not gone above 92). Her heartbeat is averaging about 80-82 beats during the day. She is wheelchair bound, quite sedentary, has debetes and has middle stage dementia. She has begun sleeping a lot during the day even after a good night's sleep. Could the pacemaker be making her heart beat too fast and causing the fatigue?
Avatar m tn Hi, I am 58 years old and had a pacemaker placement for a slow heartbeat. I go to my Doctors on a regular basis and just had a nuclear stress test and blood work. All were normal. I have been expericing some skipped heartbeat for about six months, and I have pain in the left side of my neck. When this happens, it seems to also make me feel tired. My questions are would my pacemaker pick up these events?
Avatar m tn To add to what already has been said a pacemaker is needed when the system's natural pacemaker (sinus node in the right atrium) may be irregular. Your medication helps control high blood pressure and probably would be prescribed without a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn My mother is 83. She has had irregular heartbeat for nearly 20 years and had a pacemaker implanted 3 years ago. Her last echogram showed her EF to be 20% and she has had several episodes of congestive heart failure. She is physically run down.....weight loss, loss of muscle, not to mention depression. Her cardiologist wants to implant a biventricular pacemaker. I am wondering if the benefits will out weigh the risks at this point.
Avatar n tn He might have some other insights into the hypertension and if you are going to need valve surgery (or may need valve surgery) at some point in your future, it is probably a good idea to get plugged into the system. The Cleveland Clinic has some of the best valve surgeons in the world. Your doctors are correct that hypertension can have a significantly affect regurgitation on echocardiograms.
Avatar f tn I had rapid blood loss and went into hemorrhagic shock and got a surgery to fix my heart rate. I was fine for a few week after but now every night I start getting really cold, I feel very nauseous, my head feels like its gonna explode, my legs hurt like crazy too! I feel mostly fine during the day but at night is when this happens. Doctors said its probably because of my heartrate going low and for me to not fall asleep when I feel sick or I could die. What could be wrong with me?
675084 tn?1233087505 good you ask me.. my pacemaker is set to 80beats and I'm 100% depend on my pacemaker.. i have a Medtronic this my 2nd. pacemaker... my first Medtronic pacemaker i had it for 18 yrs. until the doctor turn it down than it didn't work good.. had to get a new one.. in Dec. it will be 2yrs. i had my pacemaker check last week and i find out the doctor that put my pacemaker in didn't set my pacemaker for life depend.. Avatar n tn They occurred once every 6 to 12 months until last year when they started occurring once every three months. Each episode was preceded by feelings of dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and I would turn pale. Recently, I would sometimes also experience vomiting afterward. I have had repeated EKG's with normal results. I had an abnormal EEG, but a subsequent sleep-deprived EEG came back normal. My doctor has also ruled out epilepsy or other brain disorders with an MRI.
Avatar f tn My mother had her pacemaker replaced in March 09 She went for a pacemaker check today. She has had arrhytmias the past several months so she has an appt next week to see her doc. What causes arrhytmias even when you have a pacemaker. Is this normal? Pacemakers are supposed to treat this, right?
