Pacemaker procedure surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker procedure surgery

pacemaker

Avatar n tn However, after the surgery she has still been kept on pacemaker as cardiologists said her heart rate is still on 48-55 per minute (which is quite slow). The cardiologists have suggested that if the heart rate does not return back to normal a permanent pacemaker maybe required. Can anyone please suggest whether to wait for the heart beat to be back to normal or go for the pacemaker. Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar n tn when I was last in hospital, an 87 year old man in the bed next to me had a pacemaker fitted. Before the procedure, he could hardly walk, even using a frame, and was always panting/going dizzy. Within one day of the procedure he was walking without the frame and wasn't panting. His colour returned to normal and I was totally shocked and blown away by the transformation.
Avatar n tn Replacing the 2 wire pacemaker with the 3 wire pacemaker is a surgery. My mom had this done and it was more than she expected, so it would be wise to wait as your doctor recommended the 5 months.
539989 tn?1218832080 Aside from the collapsed lung which happened to you, other risks during pacemaker procedure include swelling, bleeding, bruising, or infection in the area where the pacemaker was placed or blood vessel or nerve damage. It is important to have regular follow-up appointment with your doctor. He or she will want to check your pacemaker and monitor your response. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn I have had an ablation surgery. I have had a- flutter surgery followed by a cardio version. I had a hard cough and have been in A-fib for 2days. I am taking Flecainide 100mg twice a day. What is the next step? I am 75 and in good health.
Avatar m tn This procedure is similar to the implantation procedure, except that usually the pacemaker leads do not need to be replaced. Under local anesthesia, the incision is opened, the generator is detached from the leads and thrown away, a new generator is attached, and the incision is then closed. The replacement procedure is typically shorter and simpler than the original installation of the pacemaker. Once you are in the lab being prepped for the procedure, external pacing pads are placed...
1078068 tn?1255906891 Low energy. Should I undergoe a full maze procedure (little confidence) or a pacemaker. My heart rate is usually low 40's when not in tachycardia. Would my ventrical beat keep me alive if pacemaker failed. Is this risky?
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law, who will be 95 is April, was recently hospitalized has several episodes of arrhythmia at the hospital. the doctor recommends a pacemaker. What are the pros and cons of someone her age to have a pacemaker implanted?
2079510 tn?1332114779 I feel worse after the second surgery. I have been told that a pacemaker will not help this condition and I am very hesitant to have the "maze" surgery. I have been cardioverted 13+ times in the last year (lost count after having it done so many times). Is there anyone out there that has been in this situation with the ablation procedure not working for them at all?
Avatar f tn Please help us to find an answer! My husband had a pacemaker implanted 6 weeks ago. The doctors implanted the wrong type (not MRI compatible) and now they tell us that they are willing to replace it! How dangerous is it? The leads are more likely to have grown into the heart tissue by now. We are very afraid of this operation!
Avatar f tn Earlier in 2014 I had an ablation procedure as a result of my 24 hour Holter recording 36,000 heart beats. My 6 month check-up post surgery 24 hour Holter recording is 39,000 heart beats. The ablation was not successful. The cardiologist is indicating I may need a pacemaker. I can't seem to find information that explains how a pacemaker can manage PVCs. Can anyone point me to resources or help me understand how this works?
Avatar n tn It sounds like some patients are less well after the procedure than before the procedure. Are there national efforts to collect data on patient outcomes so that risks can continue to be lowered and outcomes can improve and be uniform?
Avatar f tn All surgeries have some risk, but I think catheter surgery (done with catheters through an artery) are among the lest dangerous. You didn't say why you are considering surgery. If the "problem" is minor you may want to consider living with it rather than take any risk. Talk it over with your doctor. The worst I've read that I think can be a bad outcome of sinus node surgery is the sinus node shuts down and one then has to have a pacemaker implanted.
Avatar f tn I had a pacemaker put in November 2010. It was the most horrifying experience I have ever gone through as the lidocaine had absolutely no effect and versed does not work on me so I had full feeling of surgery from the initial incision to the creation of the pocket into my muscle and placement of the pacemaker. My heart rate and blood pressure had been dropping to critical levels. A BP of 60/40 at night and a heart rate in the low to mid thirties was commonplace.
Avatar m tn While and ICD implant is a procedure, it is not really surgery. And ICD is typically placed on one day and pt goes home the next. Usually no anesthesia is needed. Risk is very minimal. 2. If your ejection fraction is low, the ICD will serve as an "insurance policy"--ie hopefully you'll never need it but you'd be sure glad you had it if your heart "tried to die" on you 3.
Avatar m tn Looking for any information for corrective surgery or colon pacemaker for adults who were born with an imperforate anus.
Avatar f tn DEAR DOCTOR, I have undergone 6years ago a mitral valve raplacement and..unsuccessful Maze procedure to cure my Atrial fibrilation.Maybe the left unlarged atrium,(5,3 )whas the raison for this failling procedure i don't know... I took different antyarhitmic drugs and have had some elecrtical cardioversion having only some short atrial fib event... One day i stoped the amiodarone treatment because thyreotoxicosis; Later Propafenone helped me for a while..
Avatar n tn To my knowledge, the closest point to skin level of wires of a pacemaker it is just in the union with the pacemaker itself, therefore the easy thing it is just to detach them and leave them inside the pacemaker pocket. Why to cut them?. Now some of those wires are quite long and some surgeons roll them in circles to shorten them. At least theoretically, if there are a few circles and he is close to any electro magnetic field some current can be generated by induction producing a zap.
Avatar n tn I am 72 and have had arithmeia for 10 years- I have had the maze procedure , been on several medications with no help and have had cardio-conversions several times. My dr suggested a pace maker today. Is that the last resort and will I b able to function normally after the procedure???
1411632 tn?1281642993 (original surgery). I saw a 2nd opinion and they now recommend a ablation procedure. I have read some on this procedure but am still not sure that it is the solution to all of this.
Avatar m tn However a day surgery a defective sinoatrial node was revealed and corrected with a pacemaker. I was started on Amiodarone, and discharged with instructions to continue the medication. My condition improved for about 6 days, and then things started to go downhill. By 14 days post op, I was essentially bedridden, unable to walk more than a minute without sitting and resting. My symptoms were bronchial / lung congestion, nausea, and extreme fatigue.
Avatar m tn She is not a candidate for the surgery due to her other health problems.
Avatar m tn Will a pacemaker completely eliminate death as a result of a SA attack? I realize that the pacemaker itself is a fairly simple procedure, however, as I am only 38, I will definitely need replacement leads over time, and the risk factor of lead removal surgery has me quite frightened. Most of the data available for CCHB is either old or hard to find. It seems that pacing is suggested in nearly every case especially with increasing age.
Avatar n tn So the procedure would be to snip both ends, cap them and sew them down, and then implant the new lead in another spot close by. In that procedure you do not have to have open heart surgery. It's much like the original surgery where you get the pacemaker. They go in through the original scar site and fix everything and finish up. The doc said that she would have this is different because you would need full access to the heart, hence the open heart part.
Avatar n tn Well, not normal, but certainly not unheard of. After bypass surgery they leave a wire temporarily hanging out of the chest, attached to the heart, in case there are rhythm problems. Heart surgery is very traumatic for the organ and it just needs a little while to recover. It's great that his heart has gone from 10-36% though, in just a week.
2053419 tn?1330412329 I had a pacemaker implanted in 2008, I have since had angioplasty because I also had a port and it caused my superior vena cava? to be blocked. Now they have told me that there is scar tissue on all my pacemaker leads and my blood is having to re route so to speak. I have just started having chest pains around my pacemaker and this time they lasted almost 3 hours.. They are trying to decide whether to remove the scar tissue with laser? Should I be concerned about the new pain?
Avatar n tn My Dad has various heart issues. He has had bypass surgery about 15 years ago. Since then he has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Today, he was scheduled for surgery to remove some colon polyps. Just as they put him under the anesthesia, his resting heart rate dropped to 30 bpm. He was barely under as this happened (he said that he could hear them start to talk about it). They did not end up doing the surgery and he was awake about a half hour later.
Avatar m tn Hi - my husband had a dual chamber pacemaker implanted 2 days ago for Sick Sinus Syndrome (with 2 to 4 second pauses) and Atrial Fibrillation. After the procedure, we were informed that it was difficult to place the leads becasue my husband has a mildly enlarged heart. The night after the procedure his diaphragm was twitching in synchrony with his pulse.
Avatar n tn Is it safe to have an MRI procedure following bypass surgery? I understand there are metal wires used to repair the sternum and am concerned about the MRI magnet.
