pacemaker

Avatar n tn It sounds like some patients are less well after the procedure than before the procedure. Are there national efforts to collect data on patient outcomes so that risks can continue to be lowered and outcomes can improve and be uniform?
Avatar n tn To my knowledge, the closest point to skin level of wires of a pacemaker it is just in the union with the pacemaker itself, therefore the easy thing it is just to detach them and leave them inside the pacemaker pocket. Why to cut them?. Now some of those wires are quite long and some surgeons roll them in circles to shorten them. At least theoretically, if there are a few circles and he is close to any electro magnetic field some current can be generated by induction producing a zap.
2053419 tn?1330412329 d suggest you ask your doctor or hospital to send you the procedure report that describes your angiogram and post it on this site. You are entitled to a written report. Keep us informed.
Avatar m tn I understand that immediatly after getting a pacemaker installed there are lifting restrictions. After the healing period (how long is that any way?) are there any lifting restrictions?
Avatar n tn Thanks for answering my email! I am new to this forum and I am not sure if my first constructed response was received or not-so forgive me if this sounds like a repeated "thank you". I also had a pacemaker inserted and posted another question to the "medical forum" of this web site sincee the pacemaker on top of the ablation...is very frustrating since I don't feel any change...although your email helped me understand after effects of the ablation.
Avatar n tn when I was last in hospital, an 87 year old man in the bed next to me had a pacemaker fitted. Before the procedure, he could hardly walk, even using a frame, and was always panting/going dizzy. Within one day of the procedure he was walking without the frame and wasn't panting. His colour returned to normal and I was totally shocked and blown away by the transformation.
Avatar f tn It took a total of 10-15 min for the procedure itself, then I had to be taken to have a pacemaker/icd implanted since my arteries were clear. I think normally, you go back to your room after the procedure and have to lay flat for awhile and then have the stint removed and pressure placed on the site for a certain amount of time [mine was 20 min] the pressure part was worse then feeling the cut, but that's just my exeperience.
Avatar f tn EP tells me this tachy is coming from my sinus node. I am aware of the risks of the surgery and am not sure I am ready for a permanent pacemaker. Anyone out there that could offer some experience/advice? Thank you!!!
Avatar n tn Obviously, keying in pacemaker and low EF on google, will provide many hits as the condition (low EF) can cause arrhythmia and implanting a pacemaker would be appropriate. This procedure can involve implanting a bi-ventricular pacemaker or a caridoverter-difibrillator. These procedures reduce mortality by thirty six percent and 23 percent respectively...pacemaker doesn't cause cardiomyopathy...
Avatar m tn We are trying to figure out if we should go direclty to the insertion of a pacemaker vs. an ablasion procedure. Since ablasion procedure may need to be repeated and flecainide (drug after ablasion) is questionable, should we just go directly to the pacemaker?
Avatar n tn The surgery was accompanied with a maze procedure to normalize the heart beat rate to normal. However, after the surgery she has still been kept on pacemaker as cardiologists said her heart rate is still on 48-55 per minute (which is quite slow). The cardiologists have suggested that if the heart rate does not return back to normal a permanent pacemaker maybe required. Can anyone please suggest whether to wait for the heart beat to be back to normal or go for the pacemaker.
Avatar m tn My daughter had a duel chamber pacemaker and has had several cardioversions for A-Fib and she has NEVER had any problems with the pacemaker or leads following all of her cardioversions. They didn't need and replacements standing by or anything else.
Avatar m tn I met with him last July, also looked into a FIRM ablation procedure at OSU. At that time they had only done 26 and I opted to wait. This procedure has a much higher success rate. I am now being seen at the Cleveland Clinic this summer to get their opinion. I don't know where you are located, but they are one of the best centers in the Midwest, and one report I read said in the world. The AV node ablation with pacemaker is a possibility also, and some people are in permanent afib.
Avatar f tn Just to add, yes it could very easily have been the pacemaker. A wire could have detached from the heart or the pacemaker may have needed adjustment. In rare cases a pacemaker may develop a fault, all of which a proper checkup should have detected.
Avatar m tn This procedure is similar to the implantation procedure, except that usually the pacemaker leads do not need to be replaced. Under local anesthesia, the incision is opened, the generator is detached from the leads and thrown away, a new generator is attached, and the incision is then closed. The replacement procedure is typically shorter and simpler than the original installation of the pacemaker. Once you are in the lab being prepped for the procedure, external pacing pads are placed...
659608 tn?1318289366 She should not have the cardioversion until the clot is gone as it could embolize (move) and cause a stroke. Likely a pacemaker would be a fairly simple procedure with minimal risks. At age 93 the main goal of therapy should always be to improve the quality of life with as minimal risk as possible. Talk to your mother and see if she can help with this difficult problem.
Avatar m tn My father had cognitive changes resulting from his head trauma and the first pacemaker implantation procedure and the related sedation knocked him for a loop. He is ambulating now, regaining memory and stamina but is still quite weak. Should he wait or just have the repositioning done now? He will be going for rehab after hospitalization. Avatar f tn there are alot of great stories on this site of people who have gone thru the procedure. Good luck and relax ...just tell the doc you want a little something something to calm you down a little they are pretty receptive to our requests......let us know how it comes out for you Tine......
Avatar n tn s hard to give you a lot of information without knowing more about your ablation and what procedure they did, and what kind of pacemaker you have and how it's set. Here is some general information for you. FIrst of all, I'm going to assume you had an atrial tachycardia and your ablation was in the atria. Since you didn't specify that it was a fib, I'll assume it was probably an ablation in the right atrium. The area we burn in is very close to the AV node.
Avatar f tn Pacemaker batteries will not run out unexpectedly. When a battery is running low, the elective replacement indicator (ERI) is activated. Physicians can detect this activation during a routine office visit. In addition, the battery status and the general functioning of the pacemaker can be tested over the telephone. This is generally done every one to two months.
Avatar n tn My doctor told me that the ablation has about 90% chance of success, and 2% chance of stroke and 2% complication that needs installation of pacemaker, because the ablation site is in left ventricular. Since I am really afraid of the results of stroke and pacemaker, I have not made decision to go ablation. In recent years, I frequently felt short breath and palpitation even I took medicine everyday. Does someone can tell me what is success rate in my case if I do ablation?
Avatar n tn If however everything goes as planned, he will just have to go in through the groin, get the lead out, then go in her pacemaker site and swap out the pacemaker and put in the new lead. That way is MUCH better, no open heart surgery and recovery time would just be a matter of days instead of weeks. The doc said he'd seen 3 cases similar to hers in the past 10 years and everything went great with them. Her surgery is this Wednesday the 4th.
Avatar n tn Your rate indicates you are on the back-up pacemaker site. There are rare exceptions to this, but normally a rate such as yours does not come from the atrial pacemaker site. The rate comes from the last-ditch-emergency back-up site. If this is the case it makes good sense to get a demand pacemaker while you are still relatively healthy.
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law, who will be 95 is April, was recently hospitalized has several episodes of arrhythmia at the hospital. the doctor recommends a pacemaker. What are the pros and cons of someone her age to have a pacemaker implanted?
Avatar m tn The only electrophysiology patients ive ever seen go downhill in the procedure were pacemaker patients, not ablation patients, and they technically went downhill in the cath lab. Among these patients that went downhill during pacemaker implantation, 100% were high risk and already inpatients within the intensive care unit. None were healthy 35 year old outpatients.
Avatar n tn I had a pacemaker implanted 8 weeks ago; I was pleased on how I felt after the procedure. I was climbing 3 flights every day after walking from the parking lot to the building. Last week I underwent an av node ablation as the final procedure to correct my arrhythmia. Since, I started to retain fluids and, consequently, my physical activities diminished considerably. Went to the doctor for the fatigue and breathless issues and I was put on Lasix 40mg/day.
