Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker magnet

pacemaker

Avatar n tn Hi, I am aware of the pacemakers-defibrillators which have the inbuilt mechanism of turning off the defibrillators without compromising the functioning of the pacemaker. This is done with the help of a magnet and is usually done before a patient goes in for any surgery. However, I am not particularly aware of this model. I’ll suggest you to write mail to the company and seek an answer or maybe it’s mentioned in the manual which comes along with such devices. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar f tn Most modern pacers are fine in the MRI magnet. Make sure to get your MRI in a 3T magnet, on an MS protocol, with and without contrast. If you're willing to go as far away as Vanderbilt or St. Louis, you might also try Cleveland Clinic. Lulu might pipe in, here, with some other Ohio specialists. In the mean time, check out our Health Pages (links on right side of page), especially the ones "Advocating for Yourself" and "The Importance of the Timeline".
Avatar n tn There is some concern with implanted devices such as pacemaker, etc. causing failure of the device. Foreign bodies are also potential risks, and safety aspects need to be considered on an individual basis. Interaction of the magnetic and radio frequency fields with such objects can lead to trauma due to movement of the object in the magnetic field, thermal injury from radio-frequency induction heating of the object. If there were a problem, it would be due to induction heating.
Avatar f tn this is good news - my understanding is the MRI magnet can change the action of the ICD (pacemaker) and the newer ones can be reset remotely. It is amazing technology and I'm hopeful that you will benefit from getting this MRI done.
Avatar m tn m certainly not a health professional, but sometimes the vegal nerve is compromised when a pacemaker is inplanted, and it can lead to physical discomfort. In my case, when they check my pacer and put a magnet on it, I burp uncontrollably and I'm told it has to do with the pacer leads and proximity to the vegal nerve. Also, my daughter had a problem with internal bleeding when in high school and blood dripping on her vegal nerve caused discomfort like you describe.
Avatar n tn My mother-in-law will be 90 in April. Her doctor wants to put in a pacemaker to stabilize her heart. She has lung cancer, quite a large mass but apparently not very fast-growing. She has diabetes, which might mean amputation in her future, and she has Alzheimers that is no long mild but not very advanced. She often recognizes my husband. Some days she seems to really enjoy life. I cannot understand the doctor's recommendation.
Avatar f tn Hey there, I agree with Selma. If what your MD says is what is going on, physiotherapy may help you gain some function back. Have you tried massage? I'm a true believer-- I have a lot of pain from my jaw/neck/back/hips and I couldn't live without my monthly massage. The money is worth it to me!! I have also tried acupuncture, and have been to three difference physiotherapists. Do you do any stretching? I would try to incorporate small stretches that you can do from your floor.
Avatar f tn Neodymium magnet therapy is not a good idea. Magnet therapy may have some value, but it can also induce malignancies.
212161 tn?1599427282 m still standing. Interestingly, when my pacemaker is checked for the history of my heart electrical beats (Every beat is recorded and pulled up since the last check), they put a magnet over the pacer, which allows the hx to be checked. When that happens, I burp like crazy. I wonder if that is related to your burps.
1768276 tn?1313765923 Hi and welcome. If the neuro acts like you are nuts, then it's time to move on to another doctor. It's not usually to go through several neuros when you are looking for answers with an unknown disorder. Working through an MS diagnosis is not for the weak - it can take a long, long time before enough disease is evident to satisfy some doctors. You can find all sorts of excellent informaiton on our health pages, all of which were written by members of this community. http://www.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old brother swallowed a piece of magnet......he cant feel any chokking or something or anything......
Avatar n tn If this is a pacer/ icd, as most of them are, it has a risk of being accidently turned off with a magnet. Magnet is the kryptonite to a pacer/icd. mostly though, these increase quality of life. Mine was the highlight of 2008. It saves my life day after day. I hope his experience is the same.
572651 tn?1530999357 It has probably 50 or more pictures of my family and fun places that we have been plastered all over. They are all neet in magnet holders but it is still full with not much fridge showing I also have a few inspirational magnets. I usually hate clutter but I can't trip over the fridge, lol so I like happy things and memories in front of me to start the day and when I don't have the energy to cook to motivate me.

Avatar f tn Hi there I have had this happen one or two times before, the last being one of the worst. Out of the blue, my head feels like it is being pulled to the ground by a magnet... I feel very odd, and bothered by the feeling. The most recent time that this happened, it immediately was followed by left sided face numbness and tingling. My teeth actually felt like they were numb from a dental visit. Any ideas?
1301089 tn?1290666571 The Boys and Girls High School assistant coach dropped his shorts during the game, exposing his backside to the home fans of the Campus Magnet High School in Queens, N.Y. after a disputed call by the referees. The surprising show of skin from the assistant coach came after a shoving match on the field between assistant coaches and school safety officials.

Good news is now my pacemaker is set for it not to be ever turn off..
Avatar f tn The pacemaker itself should not be a deterent from having an ablation. I've had a pacemaker for 6 years (because of an ablation actually), and then had another ablation about a year ago. Unfortunately, the ablations don't work for me, but I have IST, not SVT so hopefully they're more effective for that.
Avatar f tn ( I have experienced tremendous relieve from carpel tunnel pain by wearing magnetic bracelet). I am nervous about wearing a magnet on my shoulder - or on upper back - due to metal in my neck. Any suggestions?
Avatar f tn My pacemaker battery had been dead for over a year and a half, and I just now was told that the pacemaker will have to be removed because it can damage the heart if it doesn't have a battery. Is this true? Incidentally, my pacemaker had not been activated for several years, as it was set for the minimum and didn't ever have to kick in.
Avatar f tn I have had numerous surgeries including the Fontan in 1987 with a revision of the Fontan in 2006, where at that time I also had a Medtronic Enrhythym Pacemaker install. 3 weeks ago I had a Pacemaker replacement due to the fact my battery on my Pacemaker was running low. The new Pacemaker installed is a Medtronic Adapta. Since the new pacemaker my Heart beat has been all over the place. My 1st Enrhythym was paced at 80 bpm, and it pretty much stayed like that for 5.
