Pacemaker insertion exercise

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker insertion exercise

pacemaker

Avatar m tn The pain associated with an implanted pacemaker may be musculoskeletal or nerve related. Most likely related to the minor surgery required for insertion of the pacemaker. This type of pain related to the incision should heal within weeks. If you have persistent chest pain at the site of the pacemaker, it might be reasonable to see your doctor so that possible causes can be evaluated.
Avatar n tn will there be personality changes after pacemaker insertion? My son is 24 and fears becoming"hyper",he now is fairly "laid back".Is this unfounded?
Avatar n tn In my experience, when a Pacemaker is inserted by a Cardiologist, a representative by the Pacemaker manufacturer follows up the insertion and programs the pacemaker in the hospital. It's not unusual that it has to be tweaked from time to time. If your husband still isn't feeling right, I'd request that you contact your Cardiologist and ask for a manufacturer's rep to be present to review the history of your heart beats since it was inserted.
Avatar n tn Normally, she should not have such pain after the insertion of the pacemaker. Maybe its position is causing some muscle spasm that is affecting her arm. The best option is to take her back to the doctor who inserted the pacemaker and explain the situation to him. If she has some fever, it may mean that the pacemaker place is infected and needs an urgent intervention.
Avatar m tn We are trying to figure out if we should go direclty to the insertion of a pacemaker vs. an ablasion procedure. Since ablasion procedure may need to be repeated and flecainide (drug after ablasion) is questionable, should we just go directly to the pacemaker?
Avatar f tn I got a pacemaker June 20th on the left side. There has been swelling in my left shoulder and arm from almost the time I got the pacemaker. The left side of my neck is contantly stiff. A venogram showed no clots. The shoulder and are feel very tight and the left arm is obviously larger than the right arm to the naked eye. My cardiologist said this is unusual but didn't think I have anything to worry about. Did my surgeon put the pacemaker in incorrectly? Is it crimping my vein?
Avatar f tn Sorry to hear of your problems. I do not know the what exercise can be done when on a pacemaker, but it sounds like you are still running on your own timing if you are able to exercise in an aerobic way (you didn't state that). I also understand a pacemaker would treat AFib only if your had a full shut-down and are are operating under full-time pacemaker timing. I could be wrong on this point, I am not a pacemaker patient myself. What has you doctor said about your symptoms?
Avatar f tn I am on my 3rd pacemaker after an ablation and pacemaker insertion 12 years ago. Since my new one on the 5th of May was ok with the exception of lacking energy to walk far. Prior to my last insertion i was walking 4k's a day. Since then no way. i went back to my Doctor 4 weeks ago and told him. He said he would make it more sensitive. Then I experienced headaches amd feelings of nausea on many occasions. i went back the following week to be told my BP had gone sky high. 160/102.
Avatar n tn My father, 89, recently had a pacemaker inserted due to bradycardia. His PMD and internal medicine specialist started him on Coumadin afterwards. Since my step-mother had been hospitalized a week before with GI bleeding due to long term (20 years) effects of Coumadin, my father is reluctant to keep on with the medication now he's at home.
Avatar n tn When I do any exercise that really contracts the muscle that my pacemaker lies under, I pay attention to how it feels and stop or switch positions if it feels like it is putting too much pressure on the pacemaker. If your pacemaker has been implanted recently, be especially careful for the first few months while the scar tissue grows to hold the pacer and leads in place.
3287038 tn?1398422427 The long-term effects are (1) the need for a permanent pacemaker (and risk of pacemaker malfunction / infection) and (2) potential negative effects that pacing might have on the heart. Some patients will have a decline in ejection fraction and worsening of valve leakage. Preventing further ventricular dilation and deterioration in EF can be achieved through a range of treatments.
Avatar n tn t get a pacemaker, I would have to stop all exercise. I got the pacemaker implant and the HR drops have decreased to about one per 3 months now, about the same frequency as when I was in my 20's. Immediately prior to the pacemaker implant, the heart rate drops were occurring several times per week. Getting my pacemaker properly adjusted was very difficult and I changed Cardio EPs three times, involving very much of trial and error on their part.
Avatar n tn He says without passing out he does not recommend a pacemaker at this time. He told me to exercise and come back in a year. This seems odd to me, slow heart rate so exercise and if you pass out then we will talk about a pacemaker. I just had hernia repair surgery and have not been able to exercise. Currently the tired feeling is pretty bad and my energy level is horrible. My General Doc was suprised by his conclusion. Thoughts on my condition, any similar experiences?
Avatar n tn My normal heart beat is 72, when i do aerobic exercise i get it up to 130 but twice during the exercise and aftere approximately 25 minutes it had suddenly dropped from the 130 to about 75, quite regular though at 75, it happened once whilst bending and once doing crunches. Pacemaker is set at 60 so thats not in play. Both times i have stopped the exercise and gone into cool down mode.
Avatar m tn at that you may need a pacemaker, then they are worried about you irradict heart rate. A pacemaker will help keep your heart rates at an optimal level, while both working out and when at rest.
Avatar m tn What was his ef when he got the pacemaker put in? Is he able to do any exercise? Presumably he has exercise tolerance issues? Exercise is usually the doctors opening line of discussion. He may need a review of his current medication , and some meds do help boost EF. Dont know if this helps......
1569985 tn?1328247482 I had an electro conversion at Christmas this year. Seems like I can't exercise without having irregular beats. I was in the hospital and in AFib for 4 days. I was exhausted and out of work for a month. Been back a couple of weeks, but seems like I'm having more issues, or maybe just hypersensitive, thinking "Here we go again." Does this seem normal to have more problems after a conversion than before?
Avatar f tn The American Heart Association Guidelines list a range of indications for permanent pacemaker insertion, including a period of asystole lasting more than 3.0 seconds. Does your 2.8 second pause warrant pacemaker insertion? Once again, this should only be considered in patients without an underlying reversible cause such as hypokalemia or pauses occurring in the presence of SVT. A repeat Holter following correction of your hypokalemia will be important. I hope this information helps.
Avatar n tn It sounds like something else may be going on which hopefully your dr can yield some answers but don't get yourself upset over it too much - the stress of worrying will only make it worse. I'm still searching for answers to my problems with exercise intolerance; I have a PM/ICD and sometimes exertion or exercise knocks me out (literally) and other times I have no problems.
Avatar m tn too much stress, too relaxed; too little magnesium, too much magnesium; too little exercise, too little exercise; not having a pacemaker, having a pacemaker; drinking hot liquids, drinking cold liquids; standing up, lying down; doing too much, sitting quietly and not doing anything! Does anyone else see a pattern here??
306245 tn?1244384967 Thank heaven he finally listened to you! Now at least you will have access to another cardiologist, albeit in another state! I have worked in pedi heart surgery but it has been a long time ago. My guess would be that he would only be in a couple of days, unless they have plans for a more thorough evaluation, which might be likely. Kids bounce back quickly, typically. We would have some that had simple open heart surgery and would be happily playing in their crib in 2 days, asking for soda!
Avatar f tn Before the pacemaker I had bradycardia and chronotropic incompetence (slow heart rev-up) plus fast beats to compensate. I'm 62 years old and have always been in decent shape, but right before the pacemaker I couldn't exercise at all. I am slowly building up strength, but first thing in the morning I feel very weak. Caffeine helps as does rapping on the top of the pacemaker. Mine is set at 60 to 130. Could raising the minimum give me more beats in the morning and thus more energy?
Avatar n tn t pass out or get dizzy after exercise or any time. I am 73 years old and run 30 miles a week and run in 5K and 10K races. My cardiologist wants to put a pacemaker in because of my low heart rate. I need some advice!
Avatar f tn I had a pacemaker installed 6 months ago for sick sinus syndrome. Despite exercise I have never gotten back my former energy level and am easily fatigued. Is this common with a pacemaker? This discussion is related to Pacemaker complications.
