Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker heart

675084 tn?1233087505 Can your pacemaker be set to make your heart beat a certain rate? My mom's Medtronic pacemaker would not allow her heart to beat under 70 beats per minute. She had a dual pacemaker. Ask your doctor if they can set your pacemaker.
948996 tn?1245949077 Try not to worry as it could have been only a small heart attack with no heart muscle damage. People can have heart attacks with pacemakers. My Mom had several with her pacemaker over 12 year period.
Avatar m tn A pacemaker is assurance against any arrhythmia that could cause cardiac arrest. It won't help any of the current heart condtions. Sometimes, as one ages there is some calicification of the heart valves that cause some leakage, and really not considered medically significant unless the leakage is moderate to severe, then there may be some shortness of breath, chest pains, etc. Thanks for sharing and if you have any further questions you are welcome to respond. Take care.
Avatar f tn no. 84 is not high, it's only generally if it gets to over 100 at rest that tachycardia is diagnosed. As long as his heart rate is stable and there are no rhythm problems, then there is certainly no requirement for a pacemaker.
Avatar m tn A pacemaker is a small device that sends electrical impulses to the heart muscle to maintain a suitable heart rate and rhythm. A pacemaker may also be used to treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A pacemaker implant is more for assurance of good, normal heartbeat than a remedy for heart failure.
Avatar f tn From what I understand, first degree heart block is a delayed transmission, without missed beats, of an impulse from the atria to the ventricles because of an impairment of the conduction (electrical) system and is generally benign. ie usually doesn't progress to complete block as is sometimes the case in 2nd block. What did your doctor say about the type II episodes?
754107 tn?1233668478 hi i also have heart block stage 2 with a pacemaker fitted i was diagnosed 2 years ago at the age of 32 i also found out last month that i have svt too .
Avatar f tn Don't be scared. The pacemaker is a great choice. Your heart has a problem with it's built in pacemaker, and to rectify this, the fitted pacemaker will over ride it. Once this is done, and your heart rate increased and stable, they can then start an investigation to the cause of this problem. It can just occur due to age, or they may find another reason such as artery disease or an infection that has damaged the pakemaker in your heart.
Avatar f tn I'm wondering what actually limits the size of the pacemaker? Is it the battery size? I often wonder why a more biological connected pacemaker hasn't been developed yet. A tiny circuit on the heart which uses the origin of the signal in the right atrium, then uses delay circuits and switches to allow current to pass through to different parts of the heart. No battery, just components using resistance etc.
Avatar n tn Do you have heart failure? Putting in a pacemaker is a big deal so it would seem wise to me to seek a second opinion. As well if you are tolerating the low rate without much symptoms and your syncope is indeed solely in response to environment then really follow what your gut is telling you. If you feel super uncomfortable about having a pacemaker put in then take some time to really think it through.
Avatar f tn Are you on any medications as well? The low BP will certainly make you feel light-headed. A HR of 93 is brisk but not all that fast. Excuse me if I don't understand: your pacer "kicks in" at 80? Usually a pacer is to bring up a slow HR like yours in the 40's. So if yours dropped, then the pacer would kick in to bring it up to 60 or 65 (my Dad's was set at 60). Anyway, I think if your BP is low, that's why you feel dizzy.
Avatar m tn Well, a pacemaker would still be advised despite the heart being able to cope with stress, The pacemaker is just going to work as a safety valve if ever required. A pacemaker does not normally discharge the heart beat and works only when an abnormal heart beat/ rate is detected. It can be set to a minimal value before it starts to respond. I would suggest reconsidering the decision of getting one. Take care!
Avatar f tn s a cosmetic treatment which sends a small current through the muscles to prevent sagging, but the instructions say not to use with pacemaker or heart condition. I have inverted T waves - they flip over when i'm on a treadmill, but am not sure if this counts as a 'heart condition' - further tests showed nothing else wrong so I'd kind of stopped worrying about it until now!
Avatar n tn //www.mayoclinic.com/health/biventricular-pacemaker/HB00084. Hope this help.
Avatar m tn my husband has been in and out of the hospital for the last year and 1/2 due to his heart. His heart rate is 25 had a pacemaker put in and has been seeing his heart dr for years now. his last visit to the hospital docyor said he didnt know what else he could do, that he was on tthe best meds that he could give him.
Avatar n tn I do not know what model your father has and even if I did would not know how it works, I just know how mine works and it seems to be working well so far. The pacemaker part of it is programmed to record heart rate that is too fast, my heart rate usually runs at 120 beats per minute but is not considered fast enough to do serious damage by my electrophysiologist so mine is programmed to slow things down if my heart rate reaches 135 beats per minute.
Avatar m tn Yes my concern is a defective pacemaker. It seem to b running fine from Nov 24 to Dec 31st. Then by accident someone hit my pacemaker real hard. I had some immediate pain and then I started having chest pains. That evenyually resulted in afib...not sure what to think...
Avatar n tn t believe a pacemaker is used to control AFib. Perhaps your father has other heart problems. The most common use for a pacemaker is to keep the heart from beating too slow, or stopping. Some times a PM is used when the heart electrical system has to be totally shut down, in which case there would be no AFib or other arrhythmia, but this is not done to my knowledge, to control AFib.
Avatar f tn Which means my heart does not pump properly because my heart is enlarged. My doctor sugested the pacemaker in case my heart would just stop. I guess I look at it when its my time to go I am ok with that. I just don't think I am up to the surgery for the implant.
Avatar f tn I just had a dual lead pacemaker put in 3 days ago to control accelerated junctional rhythm. The same night of surgery I had ajr of 135 it had overridden my pacemaker. I continue to have junctional rhythms and very rarely is my heart rate,at 85 which is what pacemaker is set at. I can't walk from one room to another without heart racing and out of breath. I feel horrible.. Will this get better as maybe my heart is irritated? I feel worse than. Before pacemaker.
Avatar f tn My mother had her pacemaker replaced in March 09 She went for a pacemaker check today. She has had arrhytmias the past several months so she has an appt next week to see her doc. What causes arrhytmias even when you have a pacemaker. Is this normal? Pacemakers are supposed to treat this, right?
2073485 tn?1331662298 Send my thoughts to her =) I do have a complete heart block, which is the reason i have a pacemaker. i had my pacemaker since i was one month old. I am now 24 and i'm on my 5th pacer. I heard that a dual chamber pacer works better because it paces the ventricle and atrium. Has your daughter ever had a single chamber? Thank you!
Avatar m tn Are you the Dr even if his HR drops to 26 or lower only once a month he stills needs a pacemaker. You can recover from death and you cant repair brain damage or organ damage from lack of oxygen to them. It just takes one really bad HR day to cause irrpairable damage or death. So yes I do think not having the pacemaker is risking his life and while you want to help him maintain his job and life he has a better chance with the pacemaker than with out.
Avatar m tn my mother had a pacemaker installed two weeks ago, prior to the sudden drop in heart rate she was very mobile and active. Now she cannot walk to the bathroom by herself. She does not bath herself or even eat. Does anyone know what complications could arise from the pacemaker.
88793 tn?1290227177 The issue then appears to be whether you have structural heart disease as to whether your lifespan is likely to be affected, and because the paper does not look at a comparison between those with structural heart diesease but no pacemaker and those with structural heart disease and a pacemaker, they cannot be sure if the pacemaker is responsible for the decline in life expectancy or whether the underlying heart problems are the cause.
970256 tn?1249423974 You did need a pacemaker inserted. When the heart rate is in the 30s the heart can actually stop beating.
