Pacemaker failure resulting radiation damage

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker failure resulting radiation damage

pacemaker

Avatar m tn Individual with isolated chronic RBBB are generally asymptomatic and do not require a pacemaker. But if serious symptoms such as fainting, etc. occur, then a pacemaker. If RBBB causes the right ventricle to increase, this enlargement can diminish the supply of blood to the lungs resulting in a reduced supply of blood to the left ventricle and then into circulation. This condition would be heart failure. Hope this gives you an insight with RBBB.
Avatar n tn my father had a heart attack in 1984, a pacemaker four years ago andnow is diagnosed with heart failure, is this normal?
Avatar m tn Aims Fluoroscopy is the standard and almost unique tool used for cardiac imaging during permanent pacemaker implantation, and its use implies exposure of patients and operators to radiation. The usefulness for this purpose of electroanatomic systems not based on fluoroscopy is unknown. Our aim was to study the feasibility of implanting single-lead VDD pacemakers without the use of fluoroscopy.
1078068 tn?1255906891 Low energy. Should I undergoe a full maze procedure (little confidence) or a pacemaker. My heart rate is usually low 40's when not in tachycardia. Would my ventrical beat keep me alive if pacemaker failed. Is this risky?
Avatar f tn You don't have the symptoms of heart failure. With that aside, conditions or medicines that slow the passing of electrical signals through the heart but are not the result of heart damage. These conditions include: Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), electrolyte imbalances, such as abnormal blood levels of potassium. . Heart medicines, such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, and digoxin can slow the heart rate.
Avatar n tn My mother had her sack around her heart removed due to pericarditis from radiation for breast cancer. The sack was hard and choking her heart. She needed 5 bypasses and the heart scraped of scar tissue. She ended up with a small heart, but with a pacemaker she was able to live another 12 years. Hers was an emergency and without it she had only 2 weeks to live because her kidneys were shutting down. What are your other cardiac problems? How much of a risk?
Avatar n tn my dad also has a pacemaker/delif we have switch drs , and the new dr said that the pacemaker was not big enough and that the company admits putting in the wrong one. I am so confused because we are trying to get information so tha we can understand whats going on. Were wondering if the right one was put in a year ago would this have helped not to damage anymore of his heart. He has been in and out of the hospital for the past year.
Avatar m tn Most of the severe problems of radiation exposure are due to hematopoitic failure, gastrointestinal damage like ulcers,CNS,secondary infection, pneumonitis. These damages are caused due to over exposure in the corresponding areas of body but not general as a whole body damage like the forums say. 5.Risk factor for lung cancer is only chronic smoking but not over exposure to radiation 6.You are not over exposed to radiation by frequent examinations for a 2 weeks duration.

Avatar n tn After 5 hours, dr aborted ablation as arrhythmia is in a dangerous location that if he continued, could leave me needing a pacemaker. Was put back on flecanide which caused bad headaches. Switched to Rhytmol (225 mg 3X daily) which was working great at controlling my tachycardia. I also have thyroid cancer and had to come off my synthorid for 4 weeks (for radiation therapy) and had to have weekly ekg's during this time period.
Avatar n tn My husband had a silent massive heart attack almost 10 years ago, with a resulting loss of about 2/3 of his heart function, cardiomyopathy & congestive heart failure. He had a 3 way pacemaker implanted a year later, with a defibrilator, pacer & synchronizer of the bottom ventricles of the heart. He is on maximum medication and has been doing relatively well until about 2 months ago when he started noticebly dragging his right leg and not swinging his right arm.

Avatar n tn She had heart failure at the age of 58 due to what was thought the radiation or sarcadosis that she had when she was 30. When she had her final heart surgery last August, the surgeon told us that the radiation really took a toll on her (that her heart was extremely hard and bones were crumblying). She did not survive and passed away at the age of 70. She had an enlarged heart at the age of 58 when she was diagnosed.
Avatar m tn the doctor performing the procedure says there is a 10% chance they could burn off too much and I would have to have a pacemaker. Is anyone out there going thru this??
Avatar f tn Doctors will not operate on AAA or pacemaker replacement due to frailness. What can I expect as the battery on the pacemaker fails?
Avatar n tn An enlarged heart is almost always secondary to heart failure, but it can be primary and cause heart failure and a low EF. Also, an enlarged heart, left ventricle, can cause arrhythmia, and the EKG indicates an incomplete BBB. An ICD is recommended and advisable. You may want to ask the underlying cause for the heart enlargement. Sometimes the enlargement can be reversed and the EF can rise to normal if there is no heart muscle damage.
Avatar f tn feeling very alone today, have had a visit with the consultant, hubby now has left and right side heart failure, his blood pressure is low, damage is worse than they originally thought, just sat there in shock, couldnt speak, so how long have we got left with this lovely , kind, loving, generous, funny man.??

Avatar f tn My mom has congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and Diabetes. She's been on diuretics her entire adult life. Over the past 8 years, whenever she got excessive fluid build-up and severe symptoms, the hospital would basically flush her out with heavy IV diuretics and she would be fine again. However, she has been hospitalized for 3 weeks now, was on a ventilator for 3 of those days and had over a liter of fluid drained from her back.
Avatar f tn Is your uncle a heart failure patient? Furosmide is medication as a diuretic to prevent congested heart failure. The medication should provide relief for shortness of breath, and the only association with shortness of breath would be that medication is not effective and there is some pulmonary edema and the heart is not pumping effectively.... the blood is backing up into the lungs and causing SOB (relative to the diuretic ineffective).
Avatar m tn t find anything. Originally I thought a pacemaker may be of some benefit, but the article I saw said that with Atrial Fibrillation, it only works for people that are Tachy-Brady (and some limited circumstances) Please see the following link (copy and paste if it's not clickable). Hope this is of some help, you've been through so much. http://www.webmd.
Avatar m tn If most of that plaque is hard, imagine the damage it will do if you squash it into the artery wall. What he should do is remove a lot of the plaque first and there are a number of tools available to achieve this. Rotablation is one, where a diamond tipped spinning drill travels along the catheter wire. The diamond cutters obliterate the plaque into harmless tiny particles and are washed away with fluid which comes out the front of the drill. Another option is laser.
Avatar m tn The heart will ultimately give-in, resulting usually in cardiac failure (heart attack). But with good management, proper treatment, careful monitoring by the vet (involving regular check-ups), low-salt diet, moderate exercise but no excitement or over-exertion, and lots of TLC, many dogs live a fairly full and contented life.
Avatar n tn Please include average ionizing radiation exposure and identify the latest types of equipment and how well it/they work - and in comparison to older procedures/methods/equipment. It sounds like some patients are less well after the procedure than before the procedure. Are there national efforts to collect data on patient outcomes so that risks can continue to be lowered and outcomes can improve and be uniform?
Avatar m tn Not sure if the radiation is strong enough to interfere with the pacemaker?
Avatar m tn My Uncle who is 75, has had a Pacemaker for the last 5yrs, with no problems. However, in the last few days, he went to the local shop in the snow, with the temperature outside a few degrees below zero. After arriving home, he collapsed, but was oblivious to the fact when he came round. He was taken to hospital and given a good checking over, but nothing was found to be amiss. A couple of days later, he again fell over, resulting in a black eye and a cut nose.
Avatar n tn In coronary artery disease, the weakened heart stretches in an attempt to compensate, resulting in dilated cardiomyopathy and often heart failure. Occasionally, dilated cardiomyopathy results from a bacterial infection. Other causes of dilated cardiomyopathy include certain chronic hormonal disorders such as long-standing, poorly controlled diabetes, morbid obesity, a persistently rapid heart rate, or thyroid disease.
Avatar f tn The thinking is that Chemo (specifically Adramycin that has been found to be toxic to the heart) and/or radiation (because where I received radiation to the two thoracic vertebra is directly opposite my heart) caused damage to the heart and specifically the left ventricle. Now finally close to a question. After my last ECHO show reduction again in my LVEF my Cardiologist stated I am now considered in Advanced Heart Failure...
