Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker care

pacemaker

Avatar n tn There have been cases of infection from the insertion of the pacemaker. There may even be an occasional rare care of allergic reaction to the metal in the device. Beyond that, I don't know of an auto immune "rejection" of the device.
Avatar f tn Doctors will not operate on AAA or pacemaker replacement due to frailness. What can I expect as the battery on the pacemaker fails?
Avatar f tn The pacemaker itself should not be a deterent from having an ablation. I've had a pacemaker for 6 years (because of an ablation actually), and then had another ablation about a year ago. Unfortunately, the ablations don't work for me, but I have IST, not SVT so hopefully they're more effective for that.
Avatar n tn My husband had a Medtronic Insync II Marquis pacemaker/defilrillator inplanted in 3/04. Even though he is end-stage & under the care of Hospice, we have been blessed with a pain free illness and would like to keep it that way. Can the defib portion of the pacemaker be turned off so that it does not interfere with a peaceful, painfree death when the time comes?

Avatar f tn hello my uncle who lives with me had a pacemaker fitted 2m ago he was given tablets to take [ furosemide 2.2mg ] since he has been takeing them his breathing is not right wen he talks he misses out words cos he cant catch his breath i took him doctors and gave less mg 20mg could it have been tablets that caused this problem he still gets out of breath quickly ?
Avatar m tn I don't think that's the general use of a pacemaker. People usually get them because their heart rate is too low and the pacer will keep it up where it belongs (60-65 bpm). PVC's are so random and unpredictable, I don't know how a pacer would correct that.
Avatar n tn when they went in to replace that lead they found the other lead off, they also found a black oily substance on my pacemaker. the pacemaker company was called, they told the dr to replace it free of charge. we have no idea what the substance was. the dr said he had never seen anything like it. we are waiting to hear from the company. since then i have been hospitalized twice, because my heart feels like it is skipping beats. now i have facial and neck swelling.

539989 tn?1218832080 I had surgery six weeks ago to have a pacemaker put in. There were complications and the Dr. pierced my lung and a chest tube had to be inserted. I still have alot of pain from where the chest tube was and I have some numbness on the left side of my back, side and arm. My chest is still extremely tender from where my pacemaker was placed. I am wondering if this is all normal. My pacemaker scar is very bad looking as well.
Avatar m tn To add to what already has been said a pacemaker is needed when the system's natural pacemaker (sinus node in the right atrium) may be irregular. Your medication helps control high blood pressure and probably would be prescribed without a pacemaker.
Avatar f tn My Heart Doctor suggested I have a pacemaker. I opted to NOT have this done becuase of my age and I am 5' & 106 lbs (small frame not much room for the pacemaker). I have been told by others that they had problems with the pacemaker and wish they had not done this. I had a blood test done recently and my kidney's were fine and I don't have trouble breathing or fluid. I don't want to go through the surgery of the pacemaker.
Avatar f tn re waiting for his appointment to get his pacemaker installed. He has to find some other type of work to do then what he was doing before because he's always done physical jobs. What jobs can he do with a pacemaker? He has cardiomyopathy and we're unable to get a list of programs he can go study or jobs he can do. His heart is at 25%. Thanks.
Avatar f tn My wife had a pacemaker installed last April to control Atrail Fibrillation. She also had an abration process to make her pacemaker dependent. She has progressively had extreme fatigue to the point that she is not able to walk very far without resting, nor exercise at all. She has had banks of tests including blood, adrenal, nuclear stress test, etc., and all were in the "normal" range.
Avatar f tn I am so sorry you feel you are depressed because of your pacemaker. I love my biventricular pacer with and ICD. I think of my pacer as heart jewelry with a purpose, I just wish they would figure out some way to put some sparkles on my pacer. HA Everyday I pat my heart and say thanks to my pacer and God. My pacer is my guardian angel and lifeline. Most of the time I forget I even have a pacer unless someone else brings it up.
Avatar n tn Hi, am doing some research. please can you explain why an 89yr old with pacemaker kept her 70bpm pulse with a fever of 40 deg.C. Also what were the metabolic implications for her? Many thanks.
Avatar m tn Is it normal after being discharged from hospital two days after having a pacemaker operation?
Avatar m tn A pacemaker is assurance against any arrhythmia that could cause cardiac arrest. It won't help any of the current heart condtions. Sometimes, as one ages there is some calicification of the heart valves that cause some leakage, and really not considered medically significant unless the leakage is moderate to severe, then there may be some shortness of breath, chest pains, etc. Thanks for sharing and if you have any further questions you are welcome to respond. Take care.
Avatar n tn I volunteer in a hospital cardiac wing, and work with loved ones who have had heart related surgeries several days a week, and certainly, pacemaker insertions are very common. We get feedback from the patients about their care, etc., and I can't recall anyone who said they had problems other that a sore spot on the chest, but almost all people with pacemaker insertions report greater energy and a better quality of life. I also have a pacemaker, and am feeling great.
Avatar n tn I felt awful when it was that slow. My primary care doctor insisted the pacemaker doctor set it at 70 beats per minute, and that helped immensely. It doesn't matter if the norm is 50--if you feel better at a higher rate, ask them to set it higher. I also have two leads - one to pace the bottom and one to pace the top. I am paced over 80% of the time, but I never notice it.
Avatar n tn Is a pacemaker operation a minor thing? Or so I heard?
Avatar n tn My mother had her pacemaker changed. She is on coumadin and that was not stopped before the surgery. She has formed a large hemotobin at the sight. A pressure pack and ice have been applied. It has been 3 days since surgery, and her breast nipple has come enlarged and red. Bruising is around the side of her body. Could this be from the blood moving down?
Avatar m tn Mom who is 89 had pacemaker surgery approximately 18 months ago. It has always bulged at the site and now she gets occasional pains and itching. He cardiologist tells us not to worry. But her friends tell her this is not normal. Does any one else have these symptoms with a pacemaker?
Avatar n tn My pacemaker was put in april 2004. I have no doctor and no insurance. How do I know when my battery needs to be changed and what do I do since I have no insurance? This discussion is related to pacemaker/hypertension.
Avatar m tn Dementia has increased over last 4 years, advance directive states no life support. Does one replace the difibrillator pacemaker in a atrial fib patient who no longer wants to be "hit" but die in peace. How long does the battery last when it is on replacemet mode?
