pacemaker

Avatar f tn s sort of a last ditch conservation mode until the battery can be replaced. What happens then is the pacemaker will fire to a preset pulse rate. It will no longer take into account what the user's heart is doing. The is reported by some to be a very uncomfortable, miserable feeling.

Also, it is not the pacer batteries that are replaced, but rather the entire pacer itself. The leads are unplugged, from the old one, and the new one is "installed".
Avatar n tn What is the criteria for deciding when a pacemaker is to be replaced? In 1999 I had a pacer implanted after an AV node ablation, indicated for a-fib/ flutter. I am pacemaker dependent. My docs said I had to wait till I was"eri" for a replacement, but the insurance company said I could have one every three years with out a letter of medical necessity. I am anxious to have it replaced due to my dependence: but don't want to rush unnecessarily.

However, if your mother is pretty sedentary, she may not notice it as much as someone who is ambulatory.
Avatar f tn Put in hospital, heart quit beating for a few seconds, had pacemaker put in, suppose to have battery replaced next year but having problems with blood pressure dropping to low, want to know if it is because the battery needs to be changed, having other systems dizziness, of balance, pain in chest, whizzy, and slur words some. I take atenolol, plavix, pravastain.
Avatar m tn ll offer the following. 100% pacemaker dependent says to me one has to be very careful about protecting the pacemaker and its ability to run (battery, other?). We are all dependent on our heart beating or face sudden death. For those pacemaker dependent that means (to me) the pacemaker has to keep running. If you have not been given detailed instructions on what to watch out for or stay away from you should seek this information from the professional who installed/prescribed the pacemaker.
Avatar m tn When a battery is replaced, is the person put under anesthesia completely. My 92 year old mother needs this done, and we are concerned about having her go entirely under. Can just that area be numbed?
Avatar f tn Have the doctors been able to tell you anything about why your heartrate is all over the place and you are having low oxygen and weakness since the pacemaker replacement? My father is experiencing similar symptoms since his pacemaker was replaced in August. The battery in his old one ran low and they replaced it with a Medtronic Adapta.
Avatar n tn i had 3 open heart surgery and on my 2nd. pacemaker.. my first pacemaker last me for 18yrs. and just got my 2nd. pacemaker Dec.2006.. my pacemaker was implanted in my upper chest on the right side.. only thing i hate the surgery doctor told me he would use the same cut as the other pacemaker but when i woke up he cut me in another spot.. well i can say.. ask your doctor his he using the same cut as the first pacemaker was in..
Avatar n tn Need an upgraded pacemaker? Pacemaker recall? What kind and what brand of your pacemaker? Do you have the serial number? You can directly contact the producer and find out why? Mine is St Jude and implanted in 2002. Still got 3 years to go. Once stage they said all the professional needed to download a programme because it reading the battery life in error. The programme in error but NOT the pacemaker itself. http://www.medscape.
Avatar m tn The answer is actually quite simple. The battery isn't replaced, the entire pacer is always replaced. Only the leads remain. There was a rechargeable pacer in the 70's. Researcher even developed a plutonium powered model developed that would last 30 years, but the idea of carrying plutonium in your chest didn't go over well. Rechargeable seems like a good idea.
Avatar n tn The pacemaker batteries last for years and before the batteries stop working, there are signs of that happening months before the pacemaker stops working. His doctor will have plenty of time to have the pacemaker battery replaced.
Avatar m tn Dementia has increased over last 4 years, advance directive states no life support. Does one replace the difibrillator pacemaker in a atrial fib patient who no longer wants to be "hit" but die in peace. How long does the battery last when it is on replacemet mode?
Avatar m tn is there a hospital stay to replace battery in a pacemaker, or same day procedure
Avatar n tn My father inlaw is 82 and had his pacemaker replaced last May. he has since had two strokes and his quality of life is not good. he is living at home with his wife. the docs checked his pacemaker a week ago and when they shut it off his heart would not beat, thus we are told when his battery runs out that will be the end, our choice. The question is: how long can we expect the battery to last and will it slowly go down.
Avatar f tn Please help us to find an answer! My husband had a pacemaker implanted 6 weeks ago. The doctors implanted the wrong type (not MRI compatible) and now they tell us that they are willing to replace it! How dangerous is it? The leads are more likely to have grown into the heart tissue by now. We are very afraid of this operation!
Avatar f tn It has been six years and it needs replaced due to a low battery --leads do not need replaced. The unit has not had to shockor pace since implanted which is good. His diagnosis is congestiveheart failure, 35-40 E F fraction(sp?) but has felt good since the by-pass; also has diabetes but under control with meds (no need for insulin shots). Questions are: how dangerous is the replacement surgery? what is the recovery like? restrictions?
Avatar f tn i had a dual chamber boston scientific pacemaker put in a week. ago. my 2nd. one since aug. of this year. i got staph infection in the first one. i had my one week check up yesterday and it looks as though one of the leads has moved. they did an x ray which shows the same as the x ray taken at the hospital the day after the pacemaker was put in. but i go back in 2 weeks to do the test again as they say the ex ray does not pick up micro changes. my question is. is this normal? and my dr.
Avatar n tn What happens when my pacemaker is disconnected to be replaced by a new one at end of battery life? This discussion is related to Pacemaker.
Avatar n tn Her checks suggested she was less than a year away from having her battery depleted. Her doctors did not want her to go too close to the predicted end of battery life because of safety issues. I would certainly suggest she be reevaluated as soon as possible and insist in the strongest terms that something be done. My wife was never in any danger and I believe that is good medical practice to replace the pacer with time to spare.
Avatar n tn If she is indeed pacemaker dependent, and she has had a pacemaker for this long then most likely once the battery is fully depleted then she will no longer have a stable ventricular escape rhythm. She may pass away from asystole in a few minutes, hours or days, one is unable to predict exactly when it will occur. If she is lucid and competent then she should be able to make the decision not to undergo the device change-out procedure.
Avatar n tn , if any, might be the fact that you need to have the devise interrogated every 6 mo. There is a battery life and when it runs down, the device is replaced. I still have 3 yrs on my battery and have not experienced the battery change. I rank this invention right up there with antibiotics. Are you having to make a decision about a pacer implant?
Avatar f tn Should mention, I have a pacemaker for my stomach issues and had the battery replaced. It was under General Anestia same day..
Avatar n tn My father has had a pacemaker / defibulator for about 7 years. He recently had a heart attack. if his defib was working properly, should he have had a heart attack? His doctor just replaced his defibulator with a new one because it wasn't working. What I wanted to know is if the defib is controlling the heart function, why did he have an attack?
