Oxymorphone versus hydromorphone

Common Questions and Answers about Oxymorphone versus hydromorphone

Avatar f tn hydromorphone was detected in patients treated with high-dose morphine. The ratio of hydromorphone to morphine ranged from 0.2 to 2.2%. Oxymorphone was not detected in any specimen from high-dose morphine or high-dose hydromorphone patients. The authors conclude, based on these data, that oxymorphone is not a metabolite of morphine or hydromorphone. I wish I had better answers for you. I am not super knowledgeable in Chemistry. This was not imperative some years ago - so I am learning.
981443 tn?1250115802 Specifically, the apparent extension of the duration of effect of the IR tablets (all other things being equal, oxymorphone has a duration of action of 5 to 8 hours in most patients) versus similar drugs in commonly used immediate-release forms -- for example Dilaudid (hydromorphone), morphine, Vilan(nicomorphine), Paramorfan (dihydromorphine) as well as prodrugs for this group such as hydrocodone, nicocodeine, codeine, dihydrocodeine and others -- is often attributed to a marginal extended-re
Avatar f tn I have been taking ms contin and oxymorphone (opana) for break through for YEARS. Frankly I'm concerned with the dosage of ma contin my pm doc has me on. I am not getting the pain relief I used to and even ibuprophen works better at times. I have been curious about Dilaudid or hydromorphone because my mother takes it but am too afraid to ask my doc.
Avatar m tn Oxycodone (with and without tylenol) and Hydrocodone are both not recommended due to the additional metabolism by the liver into oxymorphone and hydromorphone, respectively. There is still some work on the liver regardless to process opioids but Fentanyl, Dilaudid (hydromorphone), and Opana (oxymorphone) put less strain on the liver. Please keep us updated on how you are feeling and the status of your transplant. I wish you all the best!
Avatar n tn Opana has a long half life, even in immediate release form, such that 6 hour dosing works extremely well for most patients versus the 4 hour dosing of oxycodone. Oxymorphone is the metabolite of oxycodone...in other words, the roxicodone that you take is metabolized by the liver into oxymorphone. Given that you can tolerate oxycodone, which metabolizes into oxymorphone, tells me you can probably also tolerate oxymorphone in immediate release form???
Avatar f tn Your sister might need a stronger short acting pain medication to compliment the fentanyl patch such as liquid morphine (what Dee mentioned) or liquid oxycodone. There is also short acting dilaudid (hydromorphone) or opana (oxymorphone) - oxymorphone is stronger than hydromorphone. The fentanyl patch strengths go up to 100 mcg/hr and the prescription leaflet shows dosing up to 300 mcg/hr so there is a lot of wiggle room with the fentanyl patches to hopefully give her some relief.
Avatar n tn Given a daily dosage of 25 mg of oxycodone a day, Opana ER would be better dosed at 10 mg twice a day versus 5 mg twice a day. This would result in 20 mg of oxymorphone daily, which is approx. 40 mg of oxycodone daily and therefore 10 mg of Opana ER twice a day results in a 15 mg increase in oxycodone per day from the 25 mg dosage taken before the switch to Opana ER...this is a modest dose increase. There is generic Opana ER in 7.
Avatar m tn Opana worked well for me... But I have never had a med that works as long as it is supposed to! Have you ever tried Exalgo? It is hydromorphone instead of oxymorphone. I've done both but I'm on MS Contin for my extended release right now, it works well. Low dose ER meds only help to take the edge off so that the instant release works a little better. Maybe you should try a new IR like Roxie's, nucynta, or dilaudid.
Avatar f tn on my lab when i was looking it over it said i was negative for hydrocodone and i take strong doses so i am confused on that im fighting to prove my innoce and save my pride and good name, i also grt nubain shots and the person who did up my paper with my perscriptions did not put that on there , and from my under standing hydromorphone and nubane have the sme chemical make up.
Avatar f tn I agree that your pharmacist has all the information that you need regarding your new prescription for the dilaudid. Dilaudid is hydromorphone. Opana is oxymorphone. Dilaudid is slightly weaker than the Opana so you may notice that you need more medication to achieve the same amount of pain relief. I would also contact your doctor and explain to him what happened and get it fixed. I hope the short acting medications are helpful for your pain with less side effects.
Avatar f tn I'm taking Opana ER 10 mg and it's not on the list of approved drugs for my new RX plan. Fentanyl patches weren't effective. What's a good substitute? oxymorphone is not listed but hydromorphone is.
494669 tn?1275362475 Have you tried any non-narcotic options? I tend to be wary of those who are on narcotics long-term, as addiction is almost assured (you won't even know it's crept up on you until it's too late). Even if you take them as prescribed, they'll catch up with you at some point. I started taking Hydromorphone & Oxymorphone for kidney-stone pain & urinary related pain, and thought that taking 'as prescribed' precluded me from addiction. Wrong.
Avatar n tn Hi I have never heard of this so looked it up, I hope this helps www.opana.
Avatar f tn ll get a separate breakout for Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Vicoden, Morphine, Codeine, Oxymorphone, Heroine, Opium, Hydromorphone, Cocaine, Demerol, and several other Opiates/Opioid drugs; Along with their concentration levels (ng/ml) in your bloodstream.
Avatar m tn Anyway, I am asking if a drug like oxycontin or something similar, (been doing some research on alternatives) hydromorphone, oxymorphone, fentanyl, would be better for him in terms of stomach issues. I understand that only 25 percent of morphine is bioavailable to the system, and is not a very practical drug. Should he switch to oxycontin, in lue of his stomach issues? I am afraid if he stays on morphine he will have even further problems down the road.
1855076 tn?1337115303 I have a hard time remembering what each medicine is, generic name versus brand names. I'm once again having a hard time controlling the pain. I have come down to a very small dose and I haven't been using anything long acting. My goal was to see if I could manage on nothing or very little and it's very clear that my quality of life is nonexistent on such a low dose. I'm taking oxycodone 10 mg. every 4 hours. I essentially get about an hour to 1.
Avatar n tn The patient has been taking oxycodone and hydromorphone due to chronic pain from statis ulcers and diabetic neurophothy. Extremely poor circulation surgery didnt work. Now with this shortage his doctor has to switch his oxycodone. what would help as well as the oxy with out major side effects.
757827 tn?1299016483 Like you, I found Hydromorphone very easy to ween off. I count myself lucky that the w/d's were as mild as they were, because I've heard nightmare stories about w/d's from hydromorphone & oxymorphone (Dilaudid 8mg & Opana 10mg IR). Both were my drugs-of-choice and I obtained them, in large quantities, from a pain-management doctor. Been clean of them for almost 18 months now, and not looking back, but in hindsight, the w/d's were relatively mild.
Avatar m tn Before I got clean I was using about 400 mg of oxycodone per day. Sometimes morphine, oxymorphone, hydromorphone so it was a habit. I stopped cold turkey and its bad but with determination it is possible. Now I go to meetings to figure how how to stay off. W/d's are different for everyone. I always found time using consistently was a greater indicator of severity than dose... One thing that helped me with the chills, aches, restless leg was to go into a warm shower.
2017901 tn?1328639684 i also have hydromorphone would it be better to taper off one or both at same time how is things working for you, i have noticed i guess with taken some kind of pain med for so long i dont get much effect from the oxymorphone or the hydromorphone it is like i didnt even take anything i dont feel anything at all
Avatar f tn 2 codeine, morphine, hydrocodone (e.g., Vicodin), hydromorphone (e.g., Dilaudid), oxycodone (e.g., Percodan) and oxymorphone (e.g.
Avatar f tn They are fentanyl lolipops that work much faster than the standard short acting opioid formulations. You could also ask about hydromorphone or oxymorphone. I know oxymorphone is the ingredient in Opana, which is a long acting medication. Not sure if they have a short acting form of this medication and the same goes for the hydromorphone. I think dilaudid is the short acting form of hydromorphone???
