It's a long story, and what I want to find out what the effects on the brain and other organs from long tern use of oxycontin. I can't seem to find any information about this on the internet. My husband had his first neck surgery in 1990 and after that more neck surgery, 2 knee replacements, and a shoulder replacement. He was prescribed oxycontin and has been taking it since then. He is now 70 and I just wonder if some of his problems are old age or from the drugs.
Actually there are several very good articles on the use of methadone for long term treatment of chronic pain. It is beleived to be the narcotic least apt to be abused and has the least side effects.
I'm sorry I forgot the author (a respected PM Physician) of the best and most informative article but maybe someone here will remember. I found it by goggling it.
Dosage may have to be increased in time but again they beleive not as often as other opiates.

I was wondering if anyone new about the side effects of Oxycontin. I am currently taking 60 mg. 3 times a day for chronic pain. I have notice among other things that my sex drive has pretty much disappeared and that I have real problems getting erections if I may be so bold here. So I was wondering if anyone knows if that is a normal side effect of this drug. Also sweating and chills seem to be happening alot.

She began having serious side effects. I started reading on the internet about long term effects. Now she has nearly all the side effects to greater or lesser degrees. The worst is falling. She's fallen 4 times in the last week and is covered with bruises, new and old. She is now taking 14mg per day and can't stop. She has been in two different detox facilities but as soon as she gets out, she starts taking it again. She is basically an invalid.

How long term? 6 months to a year is not that long to be on it, but if you are thinking like 5 to 10 years is more longer term. It is all definitely possible if it is needed, some times a drug will lose its ability to work after a while so has to be changed with another but I think if it works now then that's great and don't worry about the future to much, what will happen will happen. Sorry don't know about the memory and side effects long term.
