Common Questions and Answers about Oxycontin and liver failure

oxycontin

Avatar f tn Thanks for the feedback, have you seen this type of thing before? Just wondering as you seem to think his days are numbered with these current symptoms? Also you seem to be a fan of KU Med are you affiliated with them? I have heard great things about the hospital and their research. Basically the local hospital he was in did an evaluation and after 2 days of being admitted they gave him a blood transfusion then did a scope of his stomach. His hemoglobin was around 7.
Avatar f tn I do remember a few years ago they ( FDA or some govt agency) were talking about taking vics off of the market because of people going into liver failure with taking them and mixing with other actiminaphine containing drugs.I guess upto 7000 mgs a day of actiminaphine is ok but still I dont know why.
Avatar f tn some would argue that as hydro is their doc...and oxycontin has no tyelonol///pers do...so oxycontin can be abused more easily..ie snorting and shooting...neither r a picnic to get off of...at 12 days u have a good bit of clean time...what were the reasons u quit 12 days ago??? they havent changed and it will take some time for ur brain to heal..u r possibly depressed and using to avoid the doomer feelings u r having...can u hang tight?
Avatar f tn 4000+ mgs a day can be detrimental to both your kidneys and your liver? I pretty much had an idea this was the case, but for the last year or so, someone very close to me takes this much, and gets sick every time he eats. He also has extreme lower back pain at times, and the doctors at the quick care keep saying it's his back, and give him even more lortabs! Could getting sick after eating mean he as something wrong with his kidneys or liver?
Avatar n tn ) So in the AM the next day, i felt very bad, shakes, etc etc, and i took just 1 40mg oxycontin, and it made me feel better! I was good all day, and the next day, I felt bad when I woke up again, so I took 1 40mg oxycontin! I am on my 3rd day, and the same thing happened! So I never took the suboxone. I am wondering if I can ween myself off of the oxycontin? Since I am taking 1 40mg pill per day, I think I may cut it in half and try a 20mg tomorrow morning.
Avatar n tn Quite a risk of addiction, if you ask me, especially considering the long acting release and the potential for abuse Someone said that OTC drugs were safer for the liver. Tylenol can be obtained OTC and is deadly to the liver if taken in too large a dose. The NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, etc.) are bad for the kidneys and also the liver if you have hepc.
Avatar m tn They prescribe Lortab, Norco, Perocoet, Oxycodone, and Oxycontin and MANY others. It just depends on the patient and the patients needs and history. You really should get with your Dr. and talk about your concerns with him/her and decide together what will be the best for you. I hope that you will let us know and keep us updated as to what evolves with your meds. Once again I want to welcome you and hope you will be an active member on here. Good Luck....
Avatar n tn She was taken to the emergency room yesterday morning and has been admitted into Intensive care. She has liver failure. She is yellow (yellow skin and eyes). She has swollen legs and stomach. The doctors are running blood tests, but they cannot tell me anything yet. I need to know what to expect. I am 20 years old and I don't know what to do. 438204 tn?1254077248 She came around but is still not sure what is reality and what is fiction. They have since ruled out stroke and heart failure as she has liver failure and had a bleed in her stomach. She is already at stage 4 Kidney failure and has been for a couple of years and her health has deteriorated the past few months to the point we were expecting something big like this to happen. 5 Years ago she had heart surgery as she has irregular heart beat, metal valve fluid on her lungs.

Avatar m tn Our dear expert, Hector has already replied but I will add my bit, as I've experienced some of the same problems as your daughter. I had cirrhosis and ESLD, end stage liver disease, which at one time had me delirious in the ER where I didn't know the date or much of anything. It's a side effect of cirrhosis known as hepatic encephalopathy. Her doctor will prescribe medicine for the HE which will help. I also had a live liver transplant with my daughter as my donor.
Avatar n tn it depends on liver function and antivirals to keep hbv und if still present check Hepatitis Technologies by google, they have a protocol studied to boost immune function under cirrhosis and to reverse it if not too decompensated but do check with them because end stage cirrhosis might be similar to this case although fulminant hepatitis goes much faster than cirrhosis and is different from it the protocol has been studied by DR. CHARLES LIEBER, DR. LORNE TYRRELL, DR. THOMAS ABSHIER, DR.
Avatar f tn But now she is complaining that all her limbs are sore. She has pain in her neck, shoulders, arms and legs and are extremely tired and suffers shortness of breath. Is this at all any indication that she is actually nearing the end? I know that her condition is very serious, and being HIV positive is also aggrevating it. Please if anybody can help me with any kind of indication of what to expect from here. Is the limb pains caused by the liver failure?
Avatar f tn .My brother 46 was given 2 months to live due to liver failure caused by alcohol and Hep B . Scared him a bit, he was put in the hospital for 4 weeks, and got better real quick. That was March 2011. He started drinking again right after he got out of the hospital. It's hard to believe but he is still working in a bar and walking. I don't know how he does it. His stomach is very swollen, he can't eat and doesn't sleep much, but he' still going!!!
Avatar m tn The symptoms you describe are many of the signs that his liver is failing. Weight loss and lots of sleeping is frequently seen in end-stage liver disease. He may get splotches and bruise easily as things progress because of low platelets, another side effect of decompensation. Avatar m tn my nana has liver failure through alcoholism and she is sleeping alot for 16 hours a time is this normal or is this the end stages of her illness
Avatar m tn I am prescribed OxyContin short release and as well as OxyContin time release daily but the OxyContin is not covered by my insurance and is quit expensive. Is there another time release pain medication I could take that would be as safe for the liver as the OxyContin??
Avatar m tn And every 3 months or so cycle an over the counter milk thistle regiment. It lowers high liver enzymes and generally vleans out the liver. And with the medication stay on as low a a dose as possible and use a breakthrough medication like Vicoden or Narco which replaced Loritab. And don't think Oxycontin is the big bad wolf. For people like me it was a life saver. Especially when things were really bad. I maxed out at 60MG 3x daily. And 15 Narco a month.
179856 tn?1333547362 Wow I really had no idea you could have liver failure and kidney failure and all that........I never really thought about it and now it makes more sense why karen Carpenter died from it.
Avatar f tn Luckily liver transplant doctors are very experienced with these issues and are very good at determining which people may need a liver AND kidney transplant and those who kidneys will "bounce back" once a new fully functioning liver is transplanted in the recipient. Please talk to your liver doctor (gastroenterologist or hepatologist) to learn more about what these tests results may mean in the context of your health and liver disease.
Avatar n tn thanks for your info. I to have had weight gain with both Lyrica and Oxycontin but I can't use the second Oxycontin qd because it causes severe constipation. so I only take the 2nd Oxy when my pain it really bad. Lyrica seems to work wonders for the intestinal nerve damage but I had a freind who was over weight and had breathing problems and her Dr. gave her a RX for Lyrica and I told her to ask him for something else because I was concerned it would put her into heart failure.
Avatar m tn Yes the oxys r both the same thing so don't get why he's on two kinds and doses and yes they can affect his kidneys and liver over time. But long use like alcohol.
Avatar f tn He was then rushed to er where they found his organ were shutting down, He was hospitalized for a month for liver and kidney failure. After being released on strike orders and visits 2-3 times a week for dialysis that last almost a month. Know he is having blackouts and dizzy spells. Is this normal or is something wrong to the point he needs to return to the hospital. when he blackouts he remembers nothing and recently hurt others please help me figure this out.
Avatar m tn October of 2011 he was in the hospital again, dealing with infection. A CT scan was done and they told us his cancer had spread to the liver and lungs. At that time he was given 6 months to a year depending on treatment. He has not been able to get treatment because of the infections. Yesterday I was speaking with his nurse. She said his liver was beginning to shut down, his belly is puffed out and his temp is low. What does that mean for his prognosis?
Avatar f tn What is the usual outcome of this? And timeline? There is not a whole lot out there for autoimmune and failure that is answering anything.
