Picking a well-tolerated opiate is usually a 'hit or miss' process. The differences in tolerability come from several factors. For example, for some opiates, the administered medication is a 'prodrug' that must be converted to the active drug by the liver; an example is the conversion of codeine to morphine, which is more efficient in some people than in others. There is also wide variation in the degree of nausea produced by different medications in different people.
I stick to my Tylenol #3 with Codeine. I use the Teva brand the rest of the pharmaceutical brands make me nauseous. But Oxycodone w/apap 5/325 is good also again only the Mallinckrodt brand. Don't take just any brand do your research.
Codeine is converted to morphine in the liver (to varying degrees in different cultural populations), so from a practical standpoint there is no difference between an addiction to nurophen vs any other opiate, such as oxycodone or heroin. The ibuprofen is more physically harmful than the codeine (with the exception of overdose, when codeine will kill person through respiratory depression just as will other opiates, particularly if combined with valium-type meds or alcohol).
However his drug of choice is probably percocet (oxycodone). Codeine is not nearly as strong as oxycodone and I assume his PCP is aware of his problems with oxycodone. Indeed it would take many codeine to compare to one oxycodone. His PCP may have prescribed him only enough for several days. If his physician felt he required the drug for pain he may be cutting him some slack.
I have a friend that can handle hydrocodone without a problem but he can't handle percocet.
Oxycodone is not metabolised into codeine or morphine (which are the two chemicals tested for in standard opiate urine tests).

For the first time in several years, 10+, her results showed a positive result for codeine, 107 ng/mL. I found an article that said a small amount of codeine may show up in patients taking high doses of morphine due to possible impurities in manufacturing. Is this correct? Why is it that a Doc. can call in a refill for an hydocodone or codeine script. And cannot call in one for percadan/oxycodone ?
Hi, i was wondering if anyone knew the differences between Oxycodone and Tylenol w/Codeine?? I know they both have acetomenophen. But, the Tylenol with Codeine has Codeine obviously. I was taking the one with 30mg. of codeine. Now I have Oxycodone 7.5-325. What is the opiad in this drug? Is it also codeine, or a different drug? I know my body's reaction to the T3, so I am a little nervous to try this new one....oxycodone. Is it stronger, not as strong, the same???
In addition to my prescribed oxycodone and alprazolam, my UA showed positive for morphine, but not codeine. The codeine cough syrup was not prescription, you just have to show ID and sign for it. I had the flue with a hacking, unproductive cough, so I drank the entire bottle during the course of a couple of days.With the syrup not being prescription, I thought nothing of it(I know better now). I know that a percentage of codeine is converted back into morphine during metabolization.
Tylenol-Codeine No.3 is W A Y weaker than Oxycodone. And would be MUCH easier to come off of.

I wonder if a semi synthetic pill like oxycodone, instead of codeine and morphine would be a better euphoriant for the dysphoria I feel inside from hurting piercings. Also I wonder if the poppy seed tea is adding to the hemorrhaging because of excess body fluids being pressurized into my body for later expelling. I bet a semi synthetic like oxycodone would be the best, maybe oxymorphone? Maybe if I make the poppy seed tea into a resin to take as a pill, that might help.
did your doctor RX it to you? You may try googling it or someone who knows about codeine and pregnancy may come along...I never was rx'd it while I was pregnant. If you are pregnant I strongly suggest you don't use any drugs that are no RX'd to you by your OB/GYN.

This is just my opinion, but I personally think a long acting med would have LESS chance of tolerance building than short acting meds, simply because they ARE longer acting and therefore, you typically have to take a lesser number of them throughout the day than you would a short acting med. In other words, let's say you were taking 10mg oxycodone in short acting form (percocet) three times a day, you would be taking a total of 30mg of oxycodone.
180 mgs of codeine is equivalent to approximately 25 mgs of oxycodone a day.
Yes, you will experience withdrawals, but they shouldn't be insanely awful. Headaches, body aches, chills, trouble sleeping, diarrhea, no energy, etc. It will last anywhere from 5-14 days and then get slowly better with time.
Drink a ton of water, no alcohol or caffeine, and try to get exercise. Hot baths with Epsom salts will help a lot.

The oxy seemed to escalate quite rapidly vs increases needed when I was on hydromorph products. Which is stronger? Which is slower to build up tolerence to? Is it different for different people? I stopped taking oxy on my own, & basically brought them
to the dr. & said I wasn't taking these. I had had a very very strange week of no sleeping, confusion etc. .. My husband & I figured it out to be the addition of lyrica.
I have compensated cirrhosis and neuropathy as a complication of my Hep C. I have been taking up to 90 mg Codeine (without the Tylenol) for a few months now. Without it I pretty much can't leave the house. With it, I have started walking 8 blocks or so each day.
This should be fine but at times, like today :), I feel like the med is accumulating n my liver because of back ache and smelly dark urine.
