Amy is right, you need a mood stabilizer, if you are going to take an antidepressant. That said if celexa works for you with out a mood stabilizer that is great. I completely get that the mood stabilizer can make you feel "dumb" and slows you down but maybe you could talk to your psychiatrist about a lower dose or something. Its important to work together with your doctor and you get what works for you. I didn't find Celexa helpful but i was on a low dose.

That's another thing I'm worried about is them adding a mood stabilizer because I already gained weight from Abilify and I don't feel like dealing with more side effects. Yes that can happen in people with bipolar with any anti-depressent. Wellbutrin is the least likely to cause this but its still a possibility. When I had a mood stabilizer that didn't work on the depressive aspect on bipolar, generally another mood stabilizer in addition instead of an anti-depressent was added for this very reason. You should speak to your psychiatriat about your concerns if you have bipolar and are being prescribed an anti-depressent as they are very valid.

Yes and it worked well as a mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic but I had a severe problem with weight gain as did other people I know who have taken it and that's relatively common. However, it is an effective mood stabilizer though I know the most likely out of the anti-psychotics to cause this problem. I have been on many different medications such as effexor, paxil, prestique and lastly pexeva. My doctor wants me to go on xanax plus a mood stabilizer pexeva which I have been on for 2 weeks. Yeah he needs to. Seroquil is a great mood stabilizer, anti depressant, and anti anxiety med but you need a good mood stabilizer too. Something like Lamictal or LIthium or whatever we are all different. It may reduce the mood swings to a more manageable level.

Go to see your Psychiatrist and ask him to give you another mood stabilizer. He may give you one or more mood stabilizer. Take your meds each time. Don't stop it.

Hi. My question is about using a mood stabilizer (Lamictal) with my Opana and hydromorphone, fentanyl and before, oxycontin. I do not get any euphoria from opiate or opiod medications or get much mental effects..and I'm wondering if my mood stabilizer is the reason for this...like it maintains me at an a level mood and this prevents my mood from being elevated similar to how it prevents me from having manic symptoms. Just a fyi, I'm not looking for the euphoria and hyperness etc....

You can't typically manage Bipolar with out a mood stabilizer... straight antidepressants do normally cause a Bipolar person to stay manic with out the mood stabilizer on board..... Haldol is an antipsychotic- ativan is for anxiety.....

I passed through 2 manias (one euphoric and one dysphoric) and am taking a mood stabilizer. Can anybody explain the difference. Is mood swings a less severe illness? does one take medications for it. Yes Ability is FDA approved for use as a mood stabilizer but each person responds differently to each medication. If it is helping him thats whats important but regardless of which medication is used a psychiatrist needs to monitor it as to a person's response and how it is helping them and any other concerns.

For the last 6 years I've been seeing my psychiatrist every 4 weeks. For the last 2 years she's been pushing Tegretol on me. That's in addition to Abilify, Buspar, Lexapro, and Tofranil.
