Common Questions and Answers about Overcome fear public speaking

fear

Avatar f tn many people have a fear of public speaking. And remember anxiety and panic can come at the most inoppertune times even if we have previously been through the exact same experience panic free time after time. I also agree that you should not expect perfection and not be too hard on yourself. Just the fact that you get up there is something that you should give yourself credit for; that is no easy feat to accomplish in my opinion. Do you have other social situations that you get anxious in?
1183666 tn?1274275146 So, JESSiCA, we meet again! I'm glad to hear you're involved with a partner and a project, but I do understand your fear of public speaking. I'm positive the vast majority of us would rather streak through Wal Mart than get up in front of a group of people. (Would anybody notice us in Wal Mart? Somehow I think we'd just "blend!") I suppose there are a number of things you could try before it was your turn to be on stage.
Avatar m tn I dont avoid engaging in public speaking,i try speaking in public the least chance i get but very short statements.I did some few reading about beta blockers and i saw that it help relieve anxiety . i once complained to my Dr but He says is nothing to worry about.I was given vitamin B6 and Magnesium combined for tremors. If Beta blockers help with anxiety why does my heart races, voice and hand still shake in public activities like speaking and suturing infront of my classmates.
Avatar f tn m horribly shy, but I took acting classes and public speaking to learn to manage it. I now speak to people pretty readily, despite breaking out a back sweat every time. Try to figure out what it is you're scared of. It isn't the dark, it's something ABOUT the dark. I'm not scared of speaking in front of people, I'm scared of looking like an idiot. But? Most often, they don't care. And they feel the same. If I calm myself and understand my fear, I can manage my fear.
Avatar m tn If you have a fear of heights, you might drive three hours out of your way to avoid crossing a tall bridge. Or if the prospect of public speaking leaves your stomach in knots, you might skip your best friend’s wedding in order to avoid giving a toast. Aside from the inconvenience factor, the problem with avoiding your fears is that you never have the chance to overcome them. In fact, avoiding your fears often makes them stronger.
Avatar m tn There are self-help books available that will teach you many tips and tricks to deal with this anxiety. If possible, take a Public Speaking class.........I did and it was the best thing I'd done for myself at that time. I still got some anxiety beforehand, but I had learned so many ways to deal with it, believe it or not, public speaking actually became fun. One of the most important things I learned was to be totally prepared.
Avatar n tn As i grew older it became worse. I am now 23 years old. I have a problem with shyness and smiling in public. When i am with some people i am familiar with, like family members and cousins, i usually smile but when i am around a crowd of people (it does not matter if people i know are in the crowd), i become very shy, don't make too much eye contact and i dont smile at all. if they laugh out loud in the crowd, sometimes i usually think they are laughing at me.
1807579 tn?1317173697 It does not survive on fomites of any kind like tables, chairs, door handles, public phones or public toilets etc,so you have nothing to fear.If you can overcome your OCD condition you won,t be afraid anymore.Beat the OCD fear and you will overcome the hiv fear. All the best.
Avatar m tn Kava or passionflower might be better for this, though best is if you can learn to overcome the fear without anything. Problem with natural medicine is, it's so individual, so you can only tell what will work (and do so without making you tired) by experimentation.
Avatar m tn So maybe I need a little help. Before Mr. Norco I use to love Public speaking because it scared the **** out of me, gave me that fear buzz, loved being afraid ( weird ) Then with Mr Norco no fear whatsoever, wasn't as much fun. Now I'm just unsure and uncomfortable, no self confidence. This time the fear is not fun. I guess I'm just a Day 18 recovering addict, asking for help once again.... Don't think I'll put the pills in my pocket tonight..
Avatar f tn If your problem is you are "too" shy when dealing with one or more people, I suggest is isn't a drug that you need. Rather you need help in facing this shyness and beating it down. This can/must be started in small steps. Pick something simple, like one situation that doesn't involve lots of people like public speaking, and condition yourself to deal with it. A good one would be talking with one other person who makes you nervous or otherwise troubled.
Avatar f tn d probably start by seeing a therapist or other professional who specializes in treating this problem, or maybe taking a public speaking course and practicing until you lose your fear of it. Or learning some CBT type techniques of relaxation and demystifying the situation. There are herbs and other amino acids, such as taurine, that can also be helpful, though any relaxation supplement or medication can cause sedation.
Avatar m tn Agreed. But some of these fears can be overcome. Puppies and chicks tend to be fast moving. Find the right kind of puppy at a pound or store, and I bet his response will be different.
Avatar f tn Hi all - new here. Just curious if anyone else has serious speaking problems (along with everything else?). I stutter and get confused on my words...
Avatar f tn So, this type of problem make an issue after some time so as soon as possible you go for the eye care specialist. I hope your problem overcome early.
Avatar n tn My doctor prescribed 20mg of Inderal daily for a public speaking phobia and anxiety. When I take it, I find that it's slightly more difficult to breathe and that I have an itchy feeling in my chest w/ a minor dry cough. I have always had mild asthma, though for the last several years, it has been extremely well controlled. I have only used albuterol once in the past 3-4 years. I've never visited a hospital for an asthma attack.
Avatar m tn This means that when I am in the state of fear/anxiety (eg. before public speaking or conversing with superiors), my throat will automatically secrete excessive mucus and I will then have the strong puking urge, affecting my performance. I am not sure if this need to be treated psychologically or physically. Self-talk did not help much.
Avatar f tn Public speaking is the most common phobia. You can try to deal with it either by seeking anxiety therapy or you can try a speechmaking class, like toastmasters, that might help you get used to and over this fear.
Avatar f tn The anxiety would be racing heart before meetings or public speaking and then turned into anxiety at times to eat . I couldn’t sit in a restaurant or I would start panicking . Never mind eating food that was not happening . I had to focus on swollening and that is not the way to eat . Anyways the anxiety has subsided a bit with positive thinking and just moving on with my day .
Avatar f tn Will taking a small amount of Xanax help with calming nerves for public speaking? Taking a small amount like 0.25 ?
Avatar f tn t go around poking random strangers with needles in public places. It literally does not happen. You were not poked with a needle. Your irrational thoughts are lying to you and causing unnecessary ruminating about a non issue. I strongly advise you to seek out a therapist with whom to address this issue. This is the only way you will be able to overcome your irrationally thinking.
Avatar f tn I am a graduate student. I have a fear of public speaking and a stage/performance fear when I speak in front of new people or students of my class. A few of my classes require that I give powerpoint presentations in front of the class. When I am on the spot, my voice and hands become shaky - I sometimes lose concentration to the point that I cannot get words out of my mouth even though I go in front of the class very well prepared.
Avatar f tn Fear of heights in all its forms is, I believe, the 2d most common phobia (the first is fear of speaking in public, officially, but I'm guessing more people confront heights than the need to speak in public so I'm guessing heights might be the most common fear). I have this phobia, but didn't have it until I got a full-blown anxiety disorder. If this is your only phobia, good; if you have several and are anxious about a lot of things, harder.
Avatar n tn I had a traumatic experience when I was a young child which left me with the fear of uncontrolled bleeding. I have attempted to overcome this fear through therapy and work in medical and dental offices. However, it returns to paralyze me at times. I need a molar extracted due to an abcess and the fear of bleeding has returned. I have had extractions in the past and obviously I survived but the anxiety continues to be huge.
Avatar n tn Some people have very specific triggers, like public speaking. They know if they have to get up and speak in front of a crowd, they will have an anxiety attack. People who have very specific, and therefore, known triggers, are "lucky" in some ways. They know exactly what they need to work on to overcome their anxiety. For the rest of us who apparently have anxiety for no reason, we are the ones in the leaky canoe. But there is ALWAYS a reason for our anxiety.
