Common Questions and Answers about Ovarian cysts and size

Avatar f tn I have had a complex cyst on my left ovary since at least mid November, and it is slow growing and very uncomfortable. I have had 2 CA125 tests that came back 33 end of Feb and 37 mid March. Have had 3 transvag u/s now, last of them being yesterday, and I noticed on the screen that the volume of my ovaries were very different. My right ovary had a volume of 3.17mL and the left was 36.18mL. Can anyone explain to me the difference in size being so large? Would that volume include the cyst?
Avatar f tn I have 2 complex cysts on my left ovary measuring 2.5 cm. They have been there since 2013 and have doubled in size. I'm 50 years old and post menopausal and have been on hormone replacement therapy for several years. I wasn't aware of the cysts until last week. I had a CT done last week for gallbladder concerns andthe cysts were noted on the CT report and noted that they have increased in size for the CT I had done in 2013 for kidney stones.
Avatar f tn Is there any correlation between the size of your cyst and the type/amount of symptoms you experience? I ask because from all that I've read on here and everywhere else, many here seem to have bigger cysts than myself (as of last U/S, my cyst was 1.9cm). Now it could have grown in the last few months, but I won't know for sure until my next U/S in December. After 2 U/S the cysts has stayed the same.
Avatar f tn it says the right ovary contains simple cysts measuring 2.0 and 0.9 cm in size. the left ovary contains simple cysts measuring 0.7,0.8 and 0.5 cm in size. IMPRESSION: bilateral ovarian cyst. I asked my doctor if that is normal and she said yes. I have look for info in internet and it says is not normal to have bilateral ovarian cyst. HELP please!
Avatar f tn Ovarian cysts can be benign or malignant but the majority (over 90%) are benign. A lot depends on your age and what type of cyst it is - functional, dermoid, etc. Your doctor hopefully will let you know if there is anything to be concerned about. You can google "ovarian cysts" to get more information so you know what questions to ask at your appointment. Please let us know how it goes.
Avatar f tn can a small ovarian cyst (golf ball size) be cancerous or does it have to be larger? and can I have ovarian cancer and still have a normal ca-125 level? Thank you.
Avatar f tn 5-3 cm in width, and 0.5-1.5 cm in thickness; however, ovarian size is reported more often in terms of volume, or length × width × thickness × 0.523. Normal ovarian volume in the menstruating females is 5-15 mL, with an approximate mean of 10 mL; however, measurements as high as 22 mL have been reported in normal ovaries." There is no connection between ovary size and breast size.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry no one responded... I thought I had but evidently did not. Most ovarian cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and resolve on their own in about 3 months. If they don't resolve and you end up needing surgery, you shouldn't need to lose your ovary if the cysts are benign (as shown by frozen section) and you have a surgeon with good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills.
Avatar f tn Quite commonly you'll get a cyst on the follicle from which the egg was released during ovulation. I had one on my left ovary in the very beginning of my pregnancy, so the doctor knows that I ovulated from the left side. Not sure the size of mine, but I have heard it can cause some issues if it is really large. If it's "normal" size and from ovulation, it will typically just go away on it's own. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Avatar f tn It is the general recommendation to watch and wait cysts that are simple and under 5cm. But, since your cyst is already 4.1 cm., I can see why your doctor has mentioned surgery as a possibility. It is possible for your cyst to go away on its own in time. There isn't anything you can do to prevent it from growing. Just be sure to keep your follow-up appointment with your doctor. Even benign cysts that grow large can cause problems. Best wishes!
Avatar f tn I have experienced both with my cysts. Do you know what size the cysts are? Often simple functional cysts will resolve themselves, but because you are in perimenopause and not experiencing regular periods, I am not sure. In most cases, ovarian cysts are benign, but larger cysts, complex cysts or ones that are causing pain may need to be removed. Often, they can do a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure with a shorter recovery time and very small incisions.
Avatar m tn I think you should call the surgeon and let them know about your increased pain and growing stomach. Be assertive and tell them you are in pain and don't feel like you can wait until the end of the week. They should work you in sooner given your symptoms. Some types of cysts can grow more rapidly than others and the risk of rupture increases as the size increases. Do you know if it is complex? What type of surgeon are you seeing?
Avatar n tn 95% of all ovarian cysts are benign.. At that size it will need to be removed... Good luck...
Avatar n tn Hi, It's very possible that this isn't necessarily a "functional" cyst. It could be just a simple cyst or some other type. I'm post menopausal --- way post menopausal and I had a cyst last January. Check out the top right of this page where it says "Health Pages" . There is a lot of information on cysts and remember that 95% of cysts are benign, as mine was. They may want to monitor it every 3 months or so to check for any changes.. but try not to worry .
Avatar f tn One was the size of a grapefruit and twisted twice on its stalk on my left ovary and the other on my right ovary was the size of a softball. I went to the ER in pain and had them taken out a few days later. The Dr also said he removed parts of my ovaries but left some ovary tissue on both sides (more on the right than the left). He was really vague and will find out more info at my followup. My question is how is this going to affect me fertility. I do want more kids.
Avatar f tn I am sorry you had a hysterectomy and at such a young age. I have read that ovarian cysts are more common in women who had hysterectomies but if you have not had a problem with them until now, then I guess you have been lucky. The blood test for ovarian cancer, CA-125, isn't all that accurate anyway so not sure it would be helpful.
Avatar f tn If you are found to have ovarian cancer and your tumor makes this tumor marker, then it can be valuable tool for your follow-up. Here are a couple of links that will give you more information: http://oreilly.com/medical/news/ovarian_ten_things.html http://www.wcn.org/findadoctor/ I hope all turns out to be benign! You should get surgery as soon as possible because your mass is so large.
Avatar f tn but it seems like you have had many scans and a consistent problem with cysts. Ovarian cancer would not get smaller like your cysts have done. But, with endo and a family history of ovarian cancer, I am not sure about the Lupron and birth control pills. Have you ever had a CT scan? Perhaps this would shed more light on the type of cysts you are dealing with. It doesn't sound like you have confidence in your doctor and a second opinion never hurts. Trust your intuition.

Avatar f tn I have also tried rubbing caster oil on my thyroid cysts and leg cyst. The thyroid cysts went down after 2 hrs but my leg cyst just reduced in size- I have had the leg one for 20 yrs vs the thyroid cysts for only 7 yrs.
551683 tn?1220656108 The symptoms you are describing are very much in line with ovarian cysts. Do you know what size or type of cysts you have? Surgery for cysts depends on size, type and whether you are in pain. In many cases if surgery is required it can be done laporascopically. Don't ignore the cysts. You really should have a gyn dealing with them. Take a look at the health pages attached to the ovarian cyst forum. There is some good information on types of cysts that you might be helpful.
Avatar n tn Up to 14% of women that have gone through menopause get cysts. There is a wide range of normal for size of ovaries. Ovarian cancer is hard to predict and size of ovaries is not used to do so. But what prompted this question? Are you having issues with your ovaries? Or did you have a concerning exam?
