Ovarian cysts and ovary removal

Common Questions and Answers about Ovarian cysts and ovary removal

Avatar f tn If the cysts continue to grow and need to be removed, removal of just the cysts (cystectomy) is the way to go if the frozen section shows they are benign. Of course, for women who are genetically predisposed to ovarian cancer, this may not be the best course. This site is a good resource about ovarian cysts - http://ovaryresearch.com/ovarian_cysts.htm. This one talks about the many adverse effects of ovary removal with links to studies - http://www.overy.org/. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I had a ovarian cystectomy in 1986, total abdominal hysterectomy in 1994, bilateral salipingoophrectomy and ovarian cysts removed in 2005. This year I had a CAT scan for another medical issue and it was discovered that I had masses both right and left adenxal area. I went to the Cancer Institute of NJ for a consultation with a GYN/Oncologist. After numerous tests including MRI, Ultrasounds, CA-125 (negative) and I had lab work done which indicated I was premenopausal.
Avatar f tn 4cm hypoechoic cystic lesion on my left ovary and another 4cm hypoechoic cystic lesion on my right ovary. Endometrioma and endometriosis not excluded. Endometrial stripe is 5mm. I am scared and don't know what to do. I posted about this on another site and I was told to see a gynecologic oncologist and not to trust an obgyn with doing a surgery. My obgyn told me I needed a laparoscopic cystectomy. He also did a CA-125 which came back 110 and my CEA was 5.0. My obgyn suspects endometriosis.
Avatar f tn Hi Everyone, I just wanted to know the experience of others. I had a laparoscopy done yesterday where a large cyst was removed from inside each ovary. The surgeon also found multiple smaller cysts in right ovary. The surgeon informed me that he has sent the cysts for a biopsy and said ' lets hope it is not cancer'. My mother died of ovarian cancer at 42 so naturally they are more concerned.
Avatar f tn m considering getting rid of my uterus mainly because I have a very high chance of uterine cancer my right ovary because I have had so many cysts on my right ovary that its not working properly anymore and even a two cm cyst cause me a lot of pain.
Avatar f tn Doctors with good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills can almost always remove ovarian cysts and preserve the ovary or enough of it for normal function. It may be more difficult to find a doctor who will do a cystectomy than an oophorectomy (ovary removal) because it takes a little more skill and time and I've read it typically doesn't pay any better.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry no one responded... I thought I had but evidently did not. Most ovarian cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and resolve on their own in about 3 months. If they don't resolve and you end up needing surgery, you shouldn't need to lose your ovary if the cysts are benign (as shown by frozen section) and you have a surgeon with good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills.
Avatar f tn it says the right ovary contains simple cysts measuring 2.0 and 0.9 cm in size. the left ovary contains simple cysts measuring 0.7,0.8 and 0.5 cm in size. IMPRESSION: bilateral ovarian cyst. I asked my doctor if that is normal and she said yes. I have look for info in internet and it says is not normal to have bilateral ovarian cyst. HELP please!

Avatar f tn One was the size of a grapefruit and twisted twice on its stalk on my left ovary and the other on my right ovary was the size of a softball. I went to the ER in pain and had them taken out a few days later. The Dr also said he removed parts of my ovaries but left some ovary tissue on both sides (more on the right than the left). He was really vague and will find out more info at my followup. My question is how is this going to affect me fertility. I do want more kids.
Avatar n tn I have had several operations for ovarian cysts removal. 12 years ago I had my right ovary removed because the cyst spread over the whole ovary, and 2 years ago it spread to the left ovary, and had that removed. Now the cyst on my left ovary has resurfaced. I am feeling alot of pain, and I have been to the doctor and was told to follow up on my cyst but I never did because of insurance reasons. But I have been having pains on my left side, like a burning and painful sensation.
Avatar f tn Benign ovarian cysts (dermoids included) do not require removal of ANY organs and certainly not your uterus unless you have a surgeon who needlessly removes organs (there are plenty out there since only 2% of hysterectomies and oophorectomies are done for a cancer diagnosis). Dermoid cysts are VERY RARELY cancerous and if you do not have a predisposition for ovarian cancer, your lifetime risk is less than 2%. I was over-treated for a benign 9.5 cm ovarian cyst (cystadenoma).
Avatar f tn The right ovary is enlarged and measures 8.2 x 4.9 x 4.0 cm. There is a complex ovarian mass that measures 5.3 x 3.1 x 3.6 cm fine low level internal echoes. There is another complex cystic lesion that measures 3.0 x 2.4 x 3.4 cm with fine low level Lacey echoes. No flow is identified within these lesions and they likely represent hemorrhagic cysts. A simple cyst is also noted measuring 4.3 x 2.4 x 3.4 cm. And the report states that I have free fluid by my vaginal cuff.
Avatar n tn I have a large mass on my left ovary and 2 cysts by it and my ca125 test came out high could this be something other than cancer.
Avatar m tn org talks about the negative effects of ovary removal. Removal of even one ovary has been shown to do more harm than good. Hysterectomy (uterus removal) is also damaging in a number of ways - hormonal / endocrine, sexual, anatomical (pelvic organ displacement), and skeletal (back, hips, figure changes). If you do end up needing surgery, you will want to find a surgeon who has good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills to preserve your ovary or enough of it for normal function.
Avatar f tn After multiple tests (ultrasound, ct scan and MRI) I was told I have complex ovarian cysts 5×4 cm on both ovaries and pancreatic cyst that is over 1cm . I have 2 questions. 1. Since I very much refuse and will be refusing contraceptives , how else naturally can I cure ovarian cysts? 2. Can acidic taste in my mouth with coating on my tongue and lower back pain be due to pancreatic cyst?
Avatar f tn The size of the cyst may necessitate the removal of your ovary but some surgeons with good cystectomy skills can remove large cysts without removing all ovarian tissue. That may be worth pursuing since you're so young. Removal of even one ovary can permanently disrupt ovarian hormone function impairing not only fertility but many aspects of health since ovarian hormones are essential to good health. I hope surgery goes well! Please post with an update.
Avatar f tn I have been having lower abdomen problems (burning constantly) for about a year. I have been seeing a Gastroenterologist and have numerous test done and have been diagnosed with GERD and Barretts Esophagus and IBS. I take medication and watch what I eat but nothing helps. I had a CT Scan for these problems and it showed a cystic mass on my ovary so I had to go to my Gyn and had a Pelvic Sonogram. I have read that sometimes Ovarian Cancer can have the same symptoms as these other problems.
20263614 tn?1493744183 My cousin told me a few days ago, after I was sent to the hospital by my Doctor. After tests and image care, ovarian cysts and an ovarian torsion was revealed on my right ovary. The hospital tried to remove it that night, but I refused and I want to know more... What happens when you remove an ovary? This is all making me feel like less of a woman. My partner is understanding, but this is freaking him out. Tomorrow I go to get "explored" (BLEGH!) for cancer and other things...
Avatar f tn Cystectomy (cyst removal) with preservation of your ovary or as much ovarian tissue as possible would be the best treatment if the cysts are benign. The ovaries and uterus are essential a woman's entire life for good health and normalcy. They are the organs that make us female and give us our female traits. My organs were needlessly removed for a benign ovarian cyst at age 49 and I have aged overnight and every aspect of my life and being has suffered.
Avatar f tn I wish, for one, that I had not trusted my gynecologist of 20 years. And I wish I had known more about how the hysterectomy and ovary removal industry "operates" and taken the necessary steps to protect/keep my vital organs. The uterus, ovaries, and tubes are essential a woman's whole life. The ovaries produce hormones into a woman's 80's. Removal of one ovary does not always cause a drop in hormones but it can even to the point of a surgical type "menopause.
Avatar f tn I have PCOS and a history of ovarian cysts. I also carry the genetic marker for ovarian cancer. My greatgrandmother had ovarian cancer at 36, my gma was 41, my great aunt was 43. My mother and her sisters all had hysterectomies in their early 30s. I have a bicarnate (sp?) uterus and it is partially attached to my bladder. This hasn't caused me issues except when I've had uterine fibroids when I was younger. At this point I have scheduled surgery for April 1.
Avatar n tn We need our ovaries and uterus our whole lives. The removal of an ovary or the uterus (and even the tubes) can permanently impair ovarian function and increase risk for many health problems. The problem is that the surgical consent form is usually open-ended giving the surgeon the upper hand to remove whatever organs he/she wants. The patient can protect herself by revising the consent form to dictate what can and cannot be removed and under what circumstances (frozen section benign or not).
Avatar m tn Not only does surgery itself have risks, many women lose an ovary or ovaries when all that needed to be removed was the cyst itself. Ovary removal and hysterectomy (uterus removal) are two of the top overused surgeries in the U.S. and some other countries. You are right to be concerned about removal of both ovaries (castration). Gynecologists should NOT even offer this to women as numerous studies going back a century have shown that it does more harm than good in many ways.
Avatar f tn I ended up having surgery and afterwards discovered that my gynecologist was deceptive about my condition and treatment options to get me to sign the consent form for hysterectomy (uterus removal) and oophorectomy (ovary removal). He used ovarian cancer scare tactics even though most ovarian cysts are benign including complex ones that have suspicious traits (such as nodules or septations).
Avatar f tn t have good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills or want to go the easier and more profitable route of ovary removal. This is something you will want to pin down with the surgeon and make sure the consent form complies with your wishes. Best of luck to you. Let us know how it goes.
