Outside of knee pain from running

Common Questions and Answers about Outside of knee pain from running

knee-pain

Avatar m tn If the pain comes on bending the knee as in walking step or running downhill or down a flight of stairs, then it could be due to Patellofemoral syndrome or runners knee. This happens due to mal-alignment of the knee cap on bending the knee (and hence any imaging study has to be taken with the knee bent), injury to the knee (you may have sustained it in past), flat feet, over tight or over lax muscles around the knee joint. All these aspects will have to be investigated by your doctor.
Avatar m tn These pains exist only as a shooting pain as a direct result of either running or tightening all the muscles around the knee simultaneously. These pains cannot be reproduced from pressure. After seeing multiple doctors, sports med docs, and an orthopedic doc, no one was able to resolve the problem. My MRI came back clean (according to the sports med doc and the ortho doc) and they basically told me I had nothing wrong with me and I should go home and just wait it out.
Avatar m tn for the last four years I have been experiencing sharp pain on the outside of my right knee starting usually after running about 3 miles. no pain when I am not running. It comes on gradually but I eventually need to stop running. The pain is located in the vicinity of the lateral meniscus and is most intense when my foot is off the ground and my leg moving forward. I have had no major injury to this knee. What is going on? is there anything I can do?
Avatar n tn I can walk and run on it fine, and have not experienced any swelling or other problems. I cannot feel any abnormalities on the outside. The pain is on top of the knee. Even pushing on a certain area it is is sensitive. What do you think?
Avatar m tn Now pain located vicinity of lateral collateral ligament and behind knee. Sharp pain behind knee upon straightening/standing. Also pain behind knee hen bending (I.e. Getting in an out of car, drivers side). Flexing foot to put shoe on cause sharpe pain around lateral collateral ligament. Knee slightly swollen an somewhat warm. Any ideas.
Avatar f tn However, yesterday when I was running, I suddenly started getting sharp stabbing pain only on the outside of my right knee. My knee is NOT swollen at all, I can easily bend my knee and pushing all over it causes no pain. It only stabs when I'm jogging on that leg. Today it was way worse. It's not bad when I walk, but it's over the top when I run. The hip/upper femur pain is constantly present, but worse when I sit.
Avatar f tn Only ONE knee hurts? Which part of your knee hurts? Front, back or sides of knee cap? It only hurts WHILE you run? What is the end result when you are done? Shaking after you run is not uncommon and is usually a sign you were running on empty during your practice. It's the after affect of that. Lactic acid builds up. Do you do anything for recovery? My son's coach instructs them to drink a bottle of chocolate milk for recovery post run.
Avatar f tn My knee is stiff and painful today underneath the knee cap where the pes anserine tendon inserts and to the inside of the knee cap (medially). I also have pain in the middle of the back of the knee, is especially sharp if I push into it. In terms of comfort and daily activities, I am having no trouble walking except that my knee will get a little swollen (very slight) and stiff if I walk a lot.
Avatar n tn These are the shock absorbers in the knee (two per knee, medial and lateral, medial inside, lateral outside). Good policy is to give every muscle and joint one day of rest for every day practicing/training. You can work out every day, but work different things. Wait 3 days and if it still hurts see a doctor. Skip your PCP if you can and go to an Ortho. Sounds to me like you'll be fine with rest...
587778 tn?1261397118 Well, in the last week, the are between my patella and thigh began to hurt badly, along the outside of my knee hurts all the way up into my thigh, on the inside the tenderness has progressed, also on the inside of my knee midway up my inner thigh I have a severe line of pain that I can also palpate. Avatar n tn m having the same surgery in 5 days on my left knee then the right in November. Anywho my doctor says that I will be able to run free of pain after a year and the pain till then is normal due to the fact that there are now screws there. He also told me that I shouldn't try to start running until then so that it will be able to heal properly.
Avatar n tn The clicking seems to be closest to the lateral posterior outside of the left knee, near the upper calf. Possibly meniscus related. A couple months ago I injured my left knee doing lunges. The pain was really bad, both the front and back of the knee. I never experienced clicking/popping in that knee prior. But suddenly it was happening all the time. As the pain subsided the clicking/popping got worse. It has been a couple months, the clicking/popping still very much there.
Avatar n tn This essentially means a softening of the cartilage of the knee cap. The anatomical sources of pain in this area is now considered to be from the richly innervated subchondral bone (bone below the articular cartilage), infrapatellar fat pad, or the medial and lateral retinaculum of the joint. “...certain mechanical conditions may predispose you to a mistracking knee cap. ” Cartilage does not have the same blood supply that bone does.
1470596 tn?1286713970 I had this problem and realised thanks to my physio, that I overpronated when running. This can cause knee problems which is why I needed to buy shoes with arch support which stops the foot rolling inwards. For walking you can buy orthotic insoles but I would not recommend running with these. I use Adistar Salvations to run. A good running shop will check you for pronation before you buy. Also this might seem obvious but are you stretching before and after running.
Avatar m tn All the tests are clear however, I have this debilitating pain that starts in my hip, and runs down the outside of my right leg to my knee. It was first treated as IlioTibial Band syndrome, but didn't respond to any physio, or exercises. Believe me, I have had several exended recovery plans. This was the reason for the lateral release operation to take the pressure off the knee / IT band. This made no difference.
1773330 tn?1314171331 i ve been running on threadmill for 2 weeks..i ve got a knee pain...any solution to decrease the pain?
Avatar f tn It was impossible to stop all other activity as walking was the way of life in this city and the nature of my job. My knee got worse without running. About a month or 2 later I went on a trip to Borneo and stupidly climbed the tallest mountain in SE Asia (a 2 day hike) mostly using the weight of my one leg. After this my other knee became as painful as the other and now they are very similar in pain. I now don't do much exercise except some yoga and even that gets too much for my knees.
Avatar m tn ve had some giving way, going up stairs is rough and coming down them are a nightmare, I now have more general pain all throughout my knee (some even on the outside now) at about a 6 on a scale of 1-10, just walking is a chore and I definitely cannot even think about running or walking fast for that matter, I can't put too much weight on it while at the gym - squats hurt - even 10lb leg presses on the knee hurts, and I have never fully regained a 'locked out' position in the knee lik
Avatar n tn Would any one please guide me what kind of pain i have, when ever i bend down my knee there is short poping sound from knee, butt there is no pain, and whenever i run or slide stairs then i feel pain in exect behind the knee and also some low back pain at at same side where the problem of leg.
Avatar f tn I have never let Stardust outside. Lately she has been running out the front door at least once a day. She meows at the door every time I walk by. She ran out into the street today. I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to keep her inside?
Avatar m tn but that seems to intensify the pain. I feel pain on the lateral side of my knee. It hurts a lot to bend and then once bent, it also hurts to unbend it. Also, i can hardly walk normally. I have a limp...this is because it hurts too bad to bend my knee, therefore, i literally have to walk by dragging my left leg. It's that bad. Bending is not the only problem, when i add pressure to the left side, i can also feel a sharp pain to my patella.
Avatar f tn s a sharp shooting electric like pain on the outside of the left knee almost dead even with the top outside corner of my knee cap. If I touch the area and rub it no pain it's actually numb but if I run my finger lightly across the bottom of my knee cap the pain is hooting from there to the out side mention spot. And by lightly I mean just light enough to feel my skin with my finger. Please any info would help it affects my work and daily life. Thank you for your time and any ideas and info.
Avatar n tn I like to stay active so I try to go walking and running in town. Halfway back from my walk it hurt unbelievably bad. My hips would not stop popping. I noticed that if I even push down on my hips it feels extremely painful. This only happens when I walk, run, or even ride horse. I don't have any clue of whats causing it and can't decide if I need to go to the doctor for it. Please help!
Avatar n tn m having pain on the outside of my quads, which I only feel when i get up, or do certain exercises, like squats. The pain is similar to pain you get from a good workout, but its all of the time and is definitely been causing some weakness in my legs. I've been diagnosed with the following, but they say this is not the cause of the pain: L5/S1 disc bulge, a very mild and broad based disc bulge just barely touching the traversing S1 nerve root. Doctors do not seem to have any idea.
