Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis upper back

osteoarthritis

Can osteoarthritis in my upper back and neck cause my hands to swell, actually only one hand swells? Excuse me if it's a dunderhead question but I just can't figure out where this swelling is coming from.
Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern. Generally pain in the back portion of the head originates from the neck problems due to irritation in the cervical (neck) spine because the nerves that supply the back of the head start in the upper cervical spine.
I have extensive Osteoarthritis in my upper back and neck from an accident I was in over 20yrs ago. I had an accident and I broke my right leg and my left arm. As a result my right leg is slightly bowed and therefore around a half inch shorter than my left leg. As a result it has affected my back and neck. Lately my legs have been swelling and itching, mostly the left. I certainly feel it's all related to my right leg injury.
Degenerative change in the cervical spine could be associated with symptoms around the arms, chest and upper back beside the head and heck region. However symptoms in these areas do not specifically indicate a spinal cause and other possible causes such as peripheral neuropathy etc may need to be considered as well.
Hi a year ago I visited my GP with left hip and upper thigh pain. He sent me for an X-Ray which showed early arthritis changes. He sent for a course of Physiotherapy which I attended for 6months. In the end I stopped going because after the initial mild improvement in pain there was no further improvement. I am taking 1500mg Glucosamine Sulphate + 1200mg Marine Chondroitin + 1000mg Omega 3 fish oil daily.
I returned to work due to financial obligations and for three weeks straight, woke up with upper back paralyzed. It went away for three weeks I am again waking up with my upper back paralyzed. I concentrate on having my brain send signals to my back to move and after a minute, I am able to get up but back is still in pain. I was painfree for a short period but it again is constant and twinges when lifting anything. What would cause my upper back to paralyze when the injury is in the lower back?
I am a 48 year old female who was diagnosed with osteoarthritis (left knee) nearly 10 years ago. After multiple tries on NSAIDS which made me ill, my orthopaedic surgeon settled on pain management (narcotic) which I have been taking for the past six years. While not an ideal situation, I follow my prescription to the letter, never taking more than prescribed. Over the past year I began to experience joint stiffness in the mornings.
Id say when i was bout 21 i started to get pains in my upper back. Between the shoulder blades around the spine. I went to the doctor way back then and they seem to be convinced that is was just weak muscles. Told me to work out strenthen those muscles. That helped a little bit. so over the the last 9 years. The pain has become more persitant. with little down time. Where as before i had good days and bad days with the pain. now im pertty much just liveing with it everyday.
It is like a combination of a spasm and something heavy crushing the bones of my upper back and chest. When it happens I cannot lay down or the pain increases, the only position that helps is straight up in a chair with my neck supported. Like the rest of you, I cannot bear to lay in bed some nights, and I usually have to get up and stand in a hot shower one or two times each night just to loosen up or stop the spasm. This started about a year ago, right after my father died.
Hi, well, she said I have Osteoarthritis in my neck and back, I have very low vit D because there was calcium build up in my bones, I have hardly any motion in my neck (to the right and left) and I have mild to moderate scoliosis. I've been depressed a lot this past week considering everything else I deal with healthwise.
I currently have restricted range of motion in my left and right upper arms. This has been a slowly worsening condition that has been progressing for perhaps 6-10 months. Please note that when I first noticed a diminished range of motion it was so minor with no pain that I didn’t even know at the time that something was wrong and figured it was just a result of losing flexibility as I aged.
I have recently been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, but have been suffering with a pain in the upper part of the inside & back of my legs, (not lower part of legs) it can only be described as cold & painful to the touch, or rather I cannot bear to touch it or for anything to touch the area because it feels icy/freezing. The easiest way to describe it is if you put your hand on the ice in your chest freezer for a while it becomes painful to the touch.

Hello- I have had lower back pain, knee pain, general pain throughout body for several years. My CT scan-MRI from 3 years ago had shown some arthritis in lower back. It seems each morning when I wake up I am very stiff, hard to move, and in pain. I noticed yesterday that now my upper left back around the shoulder area is achy, especially when I move or turn. I am taking Atenalol, Lyrica, Celebrex, Zocar, Zetia, Niaspam, Synthroid and Ativan.
Well, after a very long absence from the board, I am back. This last year has been VERY difficult. Constant UTI's and Bladder infections since March mean that I have been on way too many Antibiotics!!!
I have tried wheat bags in the past, is this the same as the arthritis pad? I have pain going down the backs of the legs, lower back pain, upper back stiffness and sometimes pain in the thighs and hips, depending on the day. I don't think my doctor realizes the pain I'm in as all he will give me is Tramal 50mg. I am waiting on a neural blockade bilaterally and haven't worked in 2 months. Are you working? Im hoping to get a job a few days a week where I can sit and move around!!
I have mid upper back pain on both sides of my back with neck and shoulder pain. Back pain is approximately along the edge of my scapulas. Pain Management believes back pain is caused by rib inflammation and is treating it with DEPOMEDROL shots once a month. I am taken Tramadol and Zanaflex which gives minor relief.. My concern is the pain on my right side will coincide with spasms in my esophogus area( middle chest pain). I have had this for over a year.

So left hand massage right side of neck very gently and then do the other side. For your upper back put pillow on your bed. Place your upper back on the pillow so your head is hanging off the pillow. Arms out to the side. This gives you a good stretch through your chest and upper back. And do some gentle breathing. If you do breathing exercises begin each thing I mentioned with gentle breathing exercises.
I suffer from alot of upper back/shoulder pain, I also have DDD of the lower spine and Osteoarthritis. This can all be a symptom of any of these diseases...I do upper arm and spine stretches and go for a massage when able to afford and these all help for a while only. Do any of you have any more suggestions as to the root cause and help for?

I have intermitant pain in the upper right arm where it joins the shoulder and more and more tremor in my right hand to the extend sometimes I can barely write. The pain is more pronounced sometimes when I move my arm or when I change positiion when laying in bed. In my work (floral design) I extensively use shears to cut bamboo, willow bracnhes.. My physician sent me to consult a specialist who could not determine the cause. The specialist did not think it was Alzheimer and Parkinson.
I just think there is a good chance if if have it in upper and middle, I have it in my back. I had a car accident and he said if I did have it in lower back, it could of caused nerve compression. It will probaly be a waste of time to get someone to listen to me about how MRIs can miss things and I only have my lumbar MRI from MO. It happens so much, but most drs are stuck on the report....
I get tingling in my arms, some times my arms feel heavy and other times just the tingling. I had a MRI on my upper back and neck this time and they found a bulge in my neck (I never have neck pain) and in my thoracic back. They can’t tell me if that is the problem. I can’t work out with the elliptical machine now, which is devastating.
Routine X-ray examinations of my back and hip found a left-hip pathology, the onset of osteoarthritis. My doctor thinks this could account for my symptoms, via an entrapped nerve in that left-hip region.
I still receive pain in my back to this day. Sometimes it is in the lower or upper back or in the shoulder blades. I also continue to have some pain in the back and on the sides of my neck. I dont think that this is a resting tremor or a tremor that carries a pattern. for the most part it is 24/7. Also the tremor has completely stayed in my back. I do not notice it anywhere else. I do get other weird sensation in my back also, like buzzing, fuzzing, or twitching.
