Avatar m tn Hello, I am 46 yrs old, male, ex-athlete (competitive level basketball) and live in London, England. A year ago I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis on my left hip during an arthroscopy and most of the joint cartilage is worn out. Take glucosamine tablets regularly. Even though my condition is not so advanced to take painkillers etc, I cannot do any sport, which is important to me (even at a light, amateur level) and walking start bothering me after a few hundered meters.

Avatar f tn 14 Months ago I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in both knees and Buritis in my hips. It came on suddenly and it is very painful. I have seen 2 specialists and have had 2 lots of steroid injections in both knees and one steroid injection in my right hip. I have been taking Meloxicam and painkillers. Today I have been to see a specialist with the view to having knee replacement surgery. After looking at my recent x rays he has informed me that I have Avascular Necrosis in both knees.
Avatar m tn Is hip replacement my only option if I am unable to manage the pain conservatively? Will I be able to continue with my level of activity if I do have a replacement. Will a replacement last long enough given my age and activity level? Should I continue to cycle and XC ski? Based on how I am understanding my test results most of my pain is from hip impingement, not necessarily osteoarthritis.
1378884 tn?1315505845 In a nutshell, osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear on the joint. It can happen at any age, not just to "old people". It can be brought on by an injury, a congenital deformity, overuse in a sport or job. RA is a malfunction of the immune system in which it mistakes joint tissue, mainly the cartilage, as something that must be attacked and eliminated. This causes the typical swelling, redness, heat, and over time, damage that causes pain and disability.
Avatar m tn I'm new to this group but have been around for a while in the MS forum. As carolanivey said, the pain that you describe as being in his groin is really in his hip. I used to think that hip pain had to be felt on the outside. Not so much :-) The actual hip socket is right where the top of the femur turns in to meet the pelvis. This was a marvel of anatomy I learned when my doc told me I had about 80% bone on bone osteoarthritis in my left hip. I was 49 then (53 now).
Avatar n tn After several tests, I have just been told I need a hip replacement. The doctor told me that groin pain is common with hip problems.
Avatar n tn Bone cysts, which are areas of relative thinning of the bone, show up as hollow areas on the X-ray adjacent to the joint itself. A hip replacement will often be the treatment of choice if there is significant evidence of osteoarthritis.Otherwise bone grafting can be considered. In this, the cyst is scraped out with a special instrument called a curette. Donor tissue or bone chips are packed into the resulting depression to replace the fluid.
Avatar f tn I take it 3 or 4 times daily. I have severe osteoarthritis and need a total right hip replacement. I had a total left hip replacement 3 months ago.
1083310 tn?1260107282 s own hyaluronan acts like a lubricant and a shock absorber in the joint and is needed for the joint to work properly. There are no known drug interactions. Just let your doctor know all your meds tho. There are some side effects that may occur but I didn't have any.
Avatar f tn I had an X-ray of my hip Monday this week, and when I saw the consultant in charge, the hip seemed ok but told me that it had mild dysplasia. He also noted that the joints in my hip were very hyperflexible. For around 2 months I've had a lot of pain in my hip, sometimes crampy and sometimes really sharp, and it hurts even more with my periods. I'm at my wit's end trying to know what it is, and what I can do about it, as I've had it for so long. Thanks.
Avatar m tn Hi there, I am following anything related to osteoarthritis in the hip. I am curious, when you say 'hip implant', do you mean a hip replacement? You said that you have had 3 hip implants? Can you tell us since when, and why so many have had to be replaced? Thank you.
Avatar f tn If these fail then you go for surgery. Joint replacement surgery may be required. Individuals with very painful OA joints may require surgery such as fragment removal, repositioning bones, or fusing bone to increase stability and reduce pain. Arthroscopic surgical intervention for osteoarthritis of the knee have been found to be no better than placebo at relieving symptoms. So discuss all the pros and cons with your surgeon and every case differs from the other. Take care!
Avatar m tn I have severe osteoarthritis in my left hip and am looking at a hip replacement down the road. I have prescription IB profen and hydrocodone but very rarely have to take anything for pain. I firmly attribute this to take Triple Flex which is glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. You have to take it for 6 to 8 weeks before it really starts taking effect. A lot of people expect it to work immediately and do not give it the amount of time it needs to work.
Avatar m tn t much older, 28, when I was told in 1974 that I needed a hip implant because of Osteoarthritis. At that time the hip implants were quite knew and my Doctor had me put it off until I couldn't stand the pain anymore because in 1974 the implants were only good for about 5 to 10 years in someone as young and active as I was. I managed to go until I couldn't stand the pain anymore which was another 7 years when I was 35 yrs old.
Avatar f tn There are a multitude of conditions that can cause Hip Pain. I am wondering if you could have Trochanteric (Hip) Bursitis. The bursea in our hip is the largest in our body. When it flares up it is very painful and causes the symptoms that you describe. There is no way to know exactly what may be going on... so as suggested you should visit your PCP. If you have Trochanteric Bursitis it can be a fairly "easy fix.
Avatar f tn Guess it depends on which nerve is being compromised. Hip Dr. says no problem with implant. Back Dr. says mild disc bulge with osteoarthritis in facet joints in lumbar spine, but not enough to cause this much pain. Tried PT, three sessions about crippled me. Now going to Chiropractor who is doing a combo of adjustments, acupuncture, plant based injections, ultra sound, etc. Still in pain, but hoping this will work.
Avatar n tn what are my chances of getting better and not having to have a hip replacement? This discussion is related to weakness in legs.
Avatar f tn If you have chronic knee pain in both of your legs then rule out osteoarthritis or other joint problems like Rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic diseases. Go for an X-ray and follow up with an orthopedician for a proper diagnosis. Take care!
Avatar n tn In your case, as it is already diagnosed as osteoarthritis, there is a possibility of increased inflammation in the hip joint, that could happen due to stress, infection etc. Osteoarthritis of hip is a common degenerative hip joint disorder that tends to affect older people. The main symptom is pain in the buttocks, thigh and calf. Treatment involves rest and antinflammatory drugs until pain subsides. Also antibiotics and hormone terapy can be implicated depending upon the severity.

199980 tn?1233797404 People around would freak out. I finally just got a hip and shoulder replacement and I am now all better. I walked on a broken hip for 2 weeks. I'm dumb.
Avatar n tn I wore a harness for about 6 weeks after birth so that my sockets would develop into the hip joint. I am healthy now and I have been jogging for neary two years. I also lift wieghts using both my arms and legs. I recently started to do yoga and I noticed that one of my legs (my right one) is longer than the other and I have a terribly time doing some of the poses that require me to hold me feet together. For example, I cannot cross my legs when I sit straight in a chair.
Avatar m tn A story of success, my father-in-law had a hip replacement and now he walks 2 miles twice a day and goes dancing regularly. He is in his seventies and participates in a hip-hop dance class.
