Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis hip hip replacement surgery

Avatar m tn It's official, will be undergoing bilateral hip resurfacing surgery in late July. Doc is going to install the Cormet implants in both hips, surgery will take around 3 hrs. I chose resurfacing as opposed to total implant due to my stats, mainly my young age---in osteoarthritis years (g)..I'm 51 (male, solid bones, no metal allergies, etc).
1131208 tn?1260207946 I have been told by the orthopedic surgeon that cortisone shots are a waste of my time as they only work for a short while and they injure the surrounding tissues as well. His opinion is that a full hip replacement surgery is my only realistic option. I have done my research, my homework, and have read that the same is true for AVN...sounds like we are in the same boat.
Avatar m tn Hello, I am 46 yrs old, male, ex-athlete (competitive level basketball) and live in London, England. A year ago I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis on my left hip during an arthroscopy and most of the joint cartilage is worn out. Take glucosamine tablets regularly. Even though my condition is not so advanced to take painkillers etc, I cannot do any sport, which is important to me (even at a light, amateur level) and walking start bothering me after a few hundered meters.
Avatar m tn Hi gottilee, It's nice to see you back on the Pain Forum again. I'm sure you remember that we're ALL CP Chronic Pain Patients and not Doctor's, but I just wanted to remind you since it's been awhile. :) I'm sorry that you will be facing a hip replacement. I'm currently recuperating from my 3rd hip replacement. Don't let that frighten you at all because the FIRST one lasted almost 30 years and after it I did EVERYTHING thing that I did before the implant.
Avatar m tn Oh, I forgot to add that a revision hip surgery to "install replacement parts" isn't nearly as bad as the initial surgery, at least as long as the femur implant and the socket implant are intact. I had my left one redone and all that needed replaced was the socket liner, and the ball head of the thigh implant. Actually the ball looked fine but the surgeon decided two new parts were better than having one old part in contact with the new part.
Avatar n tn recently i went to a hip specialist with hip pain and he said i have a hole in my hip bone which is caused by a cyst and wants to do a hip replacement. he said if i don't have it i will be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life cuz the hole will just keep growing..
Avatar f tn I take it 3 or 4 times daily. I have severe osteoarthritis and need a total right hip replacement. I had a total left hip replacement 3 months ago.
Avatar m tn Hi there, I am following anything related to osteoarthritis in the hip. I am curious, when you say 'hip implant', do you mean a hip replacement? You said that you have had 3 hip implants? Can you tell us since when, and why so many have had to be replaced? Thank you.
15502615 tn?1440995053 I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis when I was very young and needed a hip replacement when I was 28 years old. This was in 1974 and the hip joints were relatively new and wouldn't have lasted long. Therefore, my Doctor had me put off the surgery as long as I could stand the pain. I was able to put it off another 7 years until 1981.
Avatar f tn Guess it depends on which nerve is being compromised. Hip Dr. says no problem with implant. Back Dr. says mild disc bulge with osteoarthritis in facet joints in lumbar spine, but not enough to cause this much pain. Tried PT, three sessions about crippled me. Now going to Chiropractor who is doing a combo of adjustments, acupuncture, plant based injections, ultra sound, etc. Still in pain, but hoping this will work.
Avatar m tn Is hip replacement my only option if I am unable to manage the pain conservatively? Will I be able to continue with my level of activity if I do have a replacement. Will a replacement last long enough given my age and activity level? Should I continue to cycle and XC ski? Based on how I am understanding my test results most of my pain is from hip impingement, not necessarily osteoarthritis.
Avatar f tn U have not provided enough details of ur husband's serology. The blood reports would ve been helpful to make an inference. Even though surgical outcomes are always obscure it is still a chance to be taken always. Current days post op patients are treated very nicely but still casualties happen. U cannot say anything surely. With AVN the quality of life of ur husband will always be poor. So if the doctors assure you to go with surgery go with it.
Avatar n tn My husband had hip resurfacing in June 2008. Everything went great with the surgery and he progressed much faster than the doctor anticipated. On August 7, 2008 ( his third day back at work light duty) he was walking when his femur fractured, that evening he had a total hip replacement. He had more pain after the second surgery and muscle weakness, we were told it was because he had two surgeries in 7 weeks, Almost a year later he suffers from severe to mild pain even when sitting still.
17845748 tn?1460665962 if the reverse replacement fails (a regular shoulder replacement has the reverse replacement to try if the initial surgery fails). This is of concern because the life of the reverse shoulder replacement is only 20 years. Let me say that I understand his reluctance, I respect and agree with his reasoning. Since it's bone on bone, how much worse will it get to make the surgery more necessary? Thanks for reading my saga, I'd appreciate any thoughts/ideas that you may have.
Avatar f tn i had hip replacement ( with titanium) and now have problems with both hands. not the palms, just the upper parts and between the fingers. could this be from titanium toxicity?
Avatar n tn I would not think having HSV2 would affect the recovery of Hip Replacement Surgery, although you may experience slightly more outbreaks which would be quite common while your body was undergoing stress of Surgery and recovery, since Herpes is viral and not bacterial I wouldn't think it would cause any particular problems,it's a very interesting question though and I am keen to see other Members views on this and am happy to stand corrected if I am wrong.
4848471 tn?1372238752 I have had lumbar spinal stenosis, a hip replacement and have MS, the Trifecta! I'm not sure you can tell, except by process of elimination. I had a laminectomy to remedy the stenosis and a hip replacement to correct 80% bone on bone osteoarthritis.
Avatar f tn I too have had both hips done dues to Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, plus 6 revisions. Ouch! In my case, since the right hip was so difficult because it was fused for nine years, most surgeons wouldn't touch me because of actually “building” a hip where there was a mass of fused bone, but one did. If I can make a suggestion, get a second opinion. A good surgeon should be able to tell your mother whether or not she needs a hip and how soon. To keep suffering doesn't make sense.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Meloxicam and painkillers. Today I have been to see a specialist with the view to having knee replacement surgery. After looking at my recent x rays he has informed me that I have Avascular Necrosis in both knees. My left knee joint has collapsed and the right one is heading for collapse. Can you tell me if Avascular Necrosis is a form of Arthritis? If so what do you get first Osteoarthritis or Avascular Necrosis?I am 55 years old.
1378884 tn?1315505845 When I had my first hip replacement, it made my leg a good 1-1/2 inches longer than the other one. Over the three years before I had the other hip replaced, I developed problems in my left foot, opposite knee, and lower back. Having said that, RA can have many different triggers. A common infection can trigger the immune system to start attacking the body - no one knows why.
Avatar f tn have AMD Both eyes, right eye worse, glaucoma in right eye; arthritis in R knee; surgery once already. R hip bursitis w arthritis. Migraines...all right sided. Why would one side of the body have more deterioration than the other? I am 60 years old.
Avatar n tn what are my chances of getting better and not having to have a hip replacement? This discussion is related to weakness in legs.
