I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.

My mom says that her Osteoarthritis does NOT cause her hands to become red, hot, and swollen every morning. She says they become stiff, swollen, and painful. I just read elsewhere that her symptoms are typical of osteoarthritis...mine are not. In fact, the article said that red and hot are not signs of osteoarthritis at all, but they could be symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, major organs shutting down, allergies, etc. My doctor looked at my hands one day and said that I had osteoarthritis...

Does anyone have osteoarthritis and bone spurs? How fast do bone spurs grow? Do they grow on the base of the thumb? I have a lump that is hard (and hurts if I press on it) and about the size of a small pea, that was not there in September. In under 2 months this lump grew, and I want to know if it could it be a bone spur, or a rheumatoid nodule. (I have "diffuse osteoarthritis" in my joints and spine) and I am only 58. Does osteoarthritis manifest like this?

My dad is 45 and some morning when he wakes up and throughout the day his hands are so swollen and bent looking he cant even use them. He soaks them in hot water and they hurt him really bad. I cant get him to go to the doctor because he is so stubborn. He is a handyman and i dont know if its just because he has used his hands so much in his life or if he has a bad case of arthritis. I'm a 29 year old male. In 2006 I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee after an exam by an Orthropedic Doctor. He is a very fine doctor and very smart. The problem is that now many joints are hurting. My knuckles (on fingers not on hands), my elbows and both of my knees are hurting. It's been going on for about a 3 days. My initial blood test showed negative for RA,but I have all the signs and symptoms and am an orthopedic nurse so I have alot of knowledge, but of course don't know everything. My niece has RA and her initial blood work also came back negative, then later positive. I am a 34 year old woman with pain in my hands, feet, elbows, and shoulders. My hands are almost always swollen and now other joints are starting to swell. I am having trouble closing my right hand. I have tremors in my left hand as well. I have been tested for Rheumatoid arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis both of them were negative. What can I do to find out what this is. I am frustrated and feel all alone in this.

Im in PT to help as well but if anyone would like to share a short summary of their story from pre-diag symptoms through successful treatment, I would really like to see how the different docs have handled your speciific case. The most effective thing Ive done on my own was recently bought an herbal cream that has capsicum in it whihc has done more than any of the other pharma routes. Its still kinda unbearable but Ive at least noticed it being somewhat alleviated.

Based on my description does this sound like osteoarthritis? Are there any further tests you would recommend? My only other symptoms are occasional back pain and occasional tenderness around my rib cage. I have also been diagnosed with diverticulitis, although it doesn't flare up often.

The only way to diagnose osteoarthritis or autoimmune arthritis is with x-rays and blood bests. Your thirties is not to young to develop osteoarthritis (the wear and tear type) if you are athletic, or conversely, if you DON'T exercise, if you're overweight, or if you have a congenital deformity in your knees that is only now making itself known with pain. I'd say go in for an x-ray, at the very least.

ve aged 12 years in the last 2! My Rheumatologist is blaming it on Osteoarthritis.
