Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis causes of pain

osteoarthritis

Avatar m tn I understand your concern regarding your symptoms. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and it causes pain, swelling, and reduced motion in the joints. if there is no pain associated with the joint cracks or pops, this may be caused by the soft tissue in a joint. Knee popping may also occur if the patella is slightly out of alignment, and rubs on the adjacent tissues. Other causes of joint noise is the snapping of tendons or scar tissue over a prominence, or cavitation.

Avatar f tn Hi there, There are several conditions which can cause one sided ankle swelling. A traumatic injury or ankle sprain is common cause of ankle swelling and pain. Other causes are rheumatoid arthritis, gout, vascular obstruction etc.In osteoarthritis there are degenerative changes and damage to the articular cartilage. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is confirmed by physical examination and X-rays of the ankle joint.
657653 tn?1224680706 In some cases, degenerative arthritis may be hereditary. Simple x-ray testing can be very helpful to exclude other causes of pain in a particular joint as well as assist the decision-making as to when surgical intervention should be considered. Aside from weight reduction and avoiding activities that exert excessive stress on the joint cartilage, there is no specific treatment to halt cartilage degeneration or to repair damaged cartilage in osteoarthritis.
Avatar f tn I dont know what to do about it anymore. On top of having chronic heel pain, I have this too and I have seen sooo many doctors. Known of which can help me stop it. I was hoping to get some help, advice or referrals from this website. Are you still having this problem?
Avatar m tn Some degree of osteoarthritis is expected with age which can worsen post-menopause, being overweight, improper posture, lack of physical exercise/ muscle strength, chronic trauma, diabetes etc., which causes degeneration of the joint and associated inflammation that causes pain. The acute injury is unlikely to be related to it. It is not a completely treatable condition, though it can be partially managed.
Avatar m tn Thanks jemma, yeah it is really painful but i can't get any doctor i have seen to give me an exact diagnoses. it's really frustrating. When i finally got a chance to see a rhumetologist thru my County Health program because here in the states there is no Medical for people here unless you have a job. Anyway, even she said she saw the spurs on the xray but stopped short of saying arthritis.
Avatar n tn Wow..I know I'm 2 years late with my comment but I've recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. I'm 42 years old for god sake! I've been taking Prevacid for 5 years and my Doctor dismissed the "rumors" as well. I come from a family of fat and skinny but almost 100% healthy members. My Mom didn't start menopause until she was 50 so I know that can't be the problem. I keep thinking; "why are my bones doing this?
Avatar m tn Look it is bound that arthritis causes only after 50 sometimes it causes at young age also. Basically the wear and tear of the joints causes joint pain which often arises at older ages. Start some exercises which includes shoulder movements, that relieve some pain.
Avatar n tn Causes of knee swelling include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, infection, trauma, and tumors. Causes of generalized swelling (edema) include heart failure, kidney failure, and liver failure (cirrhosis).
Avatar m tn seems like i have osteoarthritis in my lower L5 (tailbone) and C2 ( neck) I did have hernaited disk operation, It has been over 3 months and I still ahve the pain in both of my legs they hurt worst then my back! I did do PT treatments and everything is still the same beofre operation.
529224 tn?1400648219 hi sarit, the sole reason of a TKR depends on the walking distance. If you have pain on rest, or as soon as you start walking, or there is too much of bending of your knees, then you should not waste any time and get the replacement done. However if you have a good walking distance (say more than 2-3 kms), then you will benefit from Synvics injections or a steroid injection also. So you tell me, wht's your walking distance?
Avatar f tn Depending on the joint, occasional steroid injections can help. I have osteoarthritis in my hips - too many years as a ballet dancer. :-/ It finally got bad enough last winter that I mentioned it to my pain doc. It worked great and didn't hurt too badly. The only drawback is that relief only lasts a few weeks, so I save the injections for winter when I'm nearly crippled.
Avatar m tn The other causes for the pain are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Arthritis or bursitis can produce pain in the joints. Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. Bursa are sac like structures above and below the joints which helps in the movement of the tendons around the joints. These can get inflamed causing bursitis. If the pain persists consult your doctor for an evaluation. Regards.
Avatar m tn X-rays show lack of fluid in the knee. Thus giving lot of pain. I have tried all sorts of therapies, but to no effect. I am now thinking of either get a shot or replace the knees. The left knee is also on the brink. I have to use pain killers. Please advise about taking a shot if I should take a shot of Synvisc-One. This discussion is related to Changing from Supartz to Synvisc-One shots.
Avatar m tn X-rays are unable to detect any early changes of osteoarthritis. The pain starts years before appreciable changes can be detected through X-rays. A repetitive tendon injury is a likely diagnosis. Also, it could be osteoarthritis since you have pain in both thumbs. Another possibility is rheumatoid arthritis. Both can cause symmetrical joint involvement. The treatment is rest, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Tylenol, Aleve or Mobic. Take care!
Avatar n tn the doc may prescribe any number of anti-inflammatories...trial and error for what suits you best really. If you get pain in the area when working it...I suppose the only answer is your body is telling you to give it a rest. If heat relieves the pain then go for it. If the joints are inflamed regularly...well then get anti-inflammatories from doc.
Avatar n tn After some time, you may feel pain always. The other possibility is osteoarthritis. This also causes pain worse after inactivity—the first few steps always painful. It could also be a bone spur. Please consult an orthopedic specialist regarding this. An X-ray of foot and ankle should be taken. Hope this helps. Do let me know if there is any thing else and keep me posted. Take care!
513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
1069378 tn?1255215132 Has anyone used acupuncture successfully to eliminate the pain from osteoarthritis? Does anyone know which treatment has had more success treating the pain of osteoarthritis, acupuncture or synvisc injections? Any help is appreciated.
Avatar n tn s worse at night when she lays on the sore body parts and the pressure causes more pain? Does she use an eggcrate mattress?
Avatar f tn Are there different types of osteoarthritis, or is there a kind that is systemic? What causes osteoarthriti to become diffuse? (I also have stiff sore muscles and feel ill. It is hard for me to walk too long. My muscle symptoms are not diagnosed, and I hope someone can put the pieces together.) Thank you to anyone who can help me.
1378884 tn?1315505845 AWESOME answer!. It's what I thought he was doing, ruling out RA. I don't seem to have the typical RA symptoms (which is reassuring) either. I have had to adjust my movement because of the R hip and now am having issues with my Left Knee. Crazy!. Anyway your help will provide me with conversation material with my Doc in a couple weeks. The Prednisone is really not helping the hip or back pain pain as of yet but it's early.
Avatar f tn Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and pain in the joints. Osteoarthritis involves growth of bone spurs and degeneration of cartilage at a joint. It is very common in adults older than 45 and can cause joint pain. Joint pain may also be caused by bursitis (inflammation of the bursae). The bursae are fluid-filled sacs that cushion and pad bony prominences, allowing muscles and tendons to move freely over the bone.
Avatar n tn Similarly if you were prone for arthritis such as osteoarthritis, the period of inactivity could have aggravated the arthritis and hence swollen joints. There are various causes of multiple joint pains like osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic pathology, thyroid problems etc. Please consult an orthopedic specialist regarding this. There are no swollen joints associated with inactivity alone as the cause. However inactivity aggravates an existing joint condition like arthritis.
Avatar f tn penetrating ulcer in stomach, pancreas, and frozen shoulder is a common cause for stiffness and pain in shoulder. This could also be a sign of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Consult an orthopaedician for assessment and a physician if there are no bony or cartilaginous causes found. Hope this helps. Take care.
